i wrote an article for the school newspaper on the woody allen thing and it's v basic and i don't get to do as deep as i'd like due to space issues but here if u r bored and want to read. if there is anything stupid pls tell me!!! it hasn't been published yet
On Feb. 1, Dylan Farrow, adopted daughter of actress Mia Farrow and writer-director-actor Woody Allen published an open letter on New York Times writer Nicholas Kristof’s blog. The letter revealed details of Dylan’s 1993 accusations that her father had molested her when she was seven years old. This is far from the first time these accusations had been discussed in the press, but the recent letter is remarkable for containing the first public comments on the case from the purported victim.
Dylan’s letter emotionally describes the encounter, which she claims happened shortly after her parents’ messy breakup, which was brought on by Allen’s relationship with Mia’s other adopted daughter, Soon-Yi Previn. The Allen-Farrow family tension was already high at the time of the accusations, and only grew subsequently. Allen was never prosecuted, as the family wanted to keep Dylan from enduring an emotional trial. Allen’s career has thrived since the scandal, with hits like Midnight in Paris and Blue Jasmine, which is nominated at the upcoming Academy Awards.
Although Dylan Farrow’s first-person account of the reported incident was a new development, critics were quick cry the same excuses for Allen that they have for years. Her mother brainwashed her to get back at Allen! And even if he did it, why should that affect the way I see his films? The public will likely never know what happened that day in 1993, but calling a victim a liar with no proof is an egregious offense. Dylan’s bravery in coming forward, hoping to provide a role model for other young women suffering from abuse, should be applauded and respected. Even if the case is foggy, Dylan Farrow clearly believes she was violated. It’s possible she was manipulated to believe this, but her pain is, in any situation, real. She should be the person people reach out to defend, not the accused. If Allen is in fact innocent, it would be terrible to jump to a conclusion of his guilt, but to disregard a vulnerable, hurting victim would is worse still.
Before I knew the details of the case against Woody Allen, he was one of my favorite filmmakers. His wry wit and worldweary attitude are charming, but how far are we willing to let a man get on his charm? In some instances, involving minor offenses or changes of heart, it is acceptable to separate an artist from his or her art, but in the case of Woody Allen and his often personal films, the two are too intertwined for me to watch without feeling a little sick.
