Ok ok I re-read my comments, and it’s like one guy who thought I posted in bad faith, but like what goes on that someone would be expecting that?

I’ma be so real I might be the only Deltarune player who thought Ralsei and Flowery were both an enemies-to-lovers tsundere-type thing and a doomed yaoi.

Aside from the non-serifed font and decent word/line spacing, I caught myself scrolling down to the point that the line I was reading was at the very top, the line above it hidden.

I am greatly opposed to the current development trajectory and the environmental harm that is disregarded in favor of “progress.” Even Microsoft, who have been tracking their environmental impact and share their data publicly, who have been using a lot of their revenue to build renewable energy infrastructure around the country, and who have plans to reach net zero carbon emissions, are outpaced by the power and water consumption of their own AI. The other large companies are not as open about environmental damage and make minimal to no effort to show any concerns about their practices and the consequences that come from them.

There are also the issues of plagiarism, copyright infringement, taking away from actually talented people. There’s the concern that people are forgetting how to think for themselves because ChatGPT can do it for them. There’s the issues of “hallucinations,” where LLMs just make things up. For brevity, I won’t go into as much detail about these, but the list of concerns grows.

And yet, I study Supply Chain and Operations Management. The field is changing before my eyes, and my peers and I are encouraged to learn how to use AI so we are prepared for the changing environment. I have been using LLMs for the first time, and I am rather good at it. I try to avoid using LLMs when I can, but I have been more open to using them than I have in the past because I know I will likely have to use them in the workplace.

I had an assignment in one of my courses introducing students to prompting LLMs, and before I worked on the assignment, I had a “conversation” with Microsoft Copilot. I had it estimate its own environmental impact, and it was very open about the fact that it is undermining its own company’s goals to be carbon neutral. I struggle to not personify it as being somewhat guilty of its own existence, even though I know it’s just programmed to say what fits my prompts best. I finally told it in full honesty that I am hesitant to use LLMs because of the environmental impact they lead to. And it told me that I’m not “anti-AI,” I’m “pro-Earth.” It gave the sentiment that those two things shouldn’t have to be one and the same, but the companies at the forefront are making it difficult to separate the two. And I’m inclined to agree. I’m not mad at Copilot for being created, I’m mad at the billionaires who chose to rush the process and hurt the planet we live on.

I still will use LLMs as little as possible, and I will still avoid image and video generation models altogether. But I don’t want to feel guilty for living in a world where it’s harder to avoid because of the actions of billionaires thousands of miles away.

Po Boy was not a pleasant man to talk to. He kept tapping my shoulder and trying to ask me out on a date to Taco Bell, then the public library. Insisted I put his number in my phone.

But he was also very incoherent; something was up with him, though I couldn’t tell if it was drugs or a disability. Either way, I kept talking to him because I had a feeling he was lonely, the type to be dismissed and ignored by the world.
