The letter ă, which I first encountered through Răzvan - the name of a Romanian colleague, has the same “uhh” pronunciation as ъ in Bulgarian. Interestingly, the Malay language before 1972, uses the letter ă for many common words that now ends with -a, such as kenapă which is now kenapa (why), or adă which is now ada (have). It's pronunciation is emphasized through the replacement of -a with -e in Bahasa SMS (malay internet slang).
