Richard Papen is the most limp-noodle, bystander, passive main character I've ever seen. He's not even the protagonist, he’s the in-world excuse for third-person unreliable narration. If he'd stayed in CA, the entire plot still would have happened without him. He got second hand recounts of half the major story events he's an insomniac who spent half the book sleeping he wasn't even at the bacchanal

EXACTLY!! take the protagonist away and you still have multiple great aspects to the world (the greek class AND the normal students). Richard’s passiveness is the perfect world building band makes him the perfect protagonist for the novel.
