[ Don't Mess With Me ]
âI hear things,â was the serene answer, draped over the tense atmosphere with morningâs calm. Eyes made of stardust twinkled with the same tranquil joy. âIâve heard of your last mission,â he went on, realizing she might have been sour with his ominous âI KNOW EVERYTHINGâ joke. Not too many of the young ones found it amusing.
âHeard great things. Youâre someone that demands respect, Captain Evans.â
âIsnât that everyone these days?â She scoffed at his answer, unamused. Was he trying to be funny or condescending? Either way, as if it werenât bad enough that the higher-ups only knew of her thanks to her brother. Crossing her arms, she looked away, confused yet slightly flustered. As far as she could remember about her most recent mission, it was a complete disaster, according to Fraser.
âReally,â Mana said, giving General Lowell a skeptical glance ââCause thatâs not what I was told, General. My commanding officer said that my last mission was a complete disaster.â

[ Practically God Himself ]
He towered above her but was a pillar of sunlight, warm, strong, gentle. Time, space, air-it all seemed to glide around him, encasing him in a light that detached him from the rest of humanity. An aura that let the world know he was kind, gentle, wise.
Offering her a hand up, the one she collided with chuckled. âWell, good morning, Mana,â he beamed, eyes afire with the same light that kissed the Spring. The absence of her rank wasnât done out of malice; he preferred being on a first name basis with those around him, Private or janitor.
âOr is it good afternoon?â He chuckled yet again. âI canât ever tell.â
Rubbing her eye with one hand, she used the other to take the hand offered for leverage. âHonestly, I couldnât care less at this point, General Lowell.â She grumbled, running her fingers through her hair. âBut Iâm hoping for morning. The more time I have the better-â
She shot straight up, tensing. Hang on a second, is that?
Oh, yeah it was. Great, first her commanding officer and now the legend himself? Wonderful. Mind racing for something to say at first, another thought came to mind. Did he just-Â âHang on, how do you know my name?â She demanded, eyes narrowing in suspicion. While she recognized the man perhaps from a far, she couldnât recall having a conversation with him. She ducked her head, meekly. âNo offense, General Lowell.â

The drive to stop her was absent, relief breathing in its place. He glanced at her through eyes made of ice blue steel. She was where Darren stood once, brave and true, as solid as the sun. Reporting in about the emissary he valiantly saved, all by himself. âYouâre free to go,â he said, his voice weary, showing no interest in whatever Mana chose to do.
Pathetic. Standing in the young Evansâ place was a tiny woman that felt she knew something. Suppressing the bile rising in his throat, Connor returned his attention to his paperwork. As long as she didnât meet his expectations and botch the conference, she was as free as a bird.
Hearing his dismissal brought nothing but relief to the stealth unit. As soon as she stepped out of the conference room, she took a deep breath, slouching against the wall. Okay. That couldâve gone better. But it couldâve gone worse too. Now she had a conference to prepare for.Â
The first order of business then would be to track down Brent. Then to form her unit. Amin would definitely be one of them. Maybe Brent too. Perhaps Mica and Osi would be willing to join in too? As she made the list in her head, she turned one of the corners only to crash into a larger figure. Disoriented and slightly flustered on the ground, she looked up.
âOw...â She mumbled, rubbing her head. "Sorry about that. Didn't see you there."
So, that happened.
Iâm glad it did.

[ Proving Him WRONG ]
âThen itâs settled,â the officer sighed, hand running over tired features. âThere is one matter of equal importance Iâd like you to settle after the conference, as Iâve been unable to find a far more suitable candidate for the job. But Iâd rather not overload you with responsibility, Captain,â he finished, an extra special touch on her rank.
âYou may do as you wish. For now. Please do not forget todayâs meeting with the very same force youâll be debating against. Call it a prelude if you will. Itâs just a test to see if youâll be capable of handling yourself.â
âYou could just tell me now,â Mana quipped, the words tumbling out without warning. She cursed at herself before sighing. So much for acting on her best behavior. Major Fraser always did bring out the worst in her. âI am very sure I can handle whatever you throw at me, Major.â
That and also, the less time she had to spend with him, the better. She growled internally. She wonât just prove herself capable. She'll prove Fraser wrong. Sheâll go above and beyond in todayâs conference (that she just learned she had today) especially for him. âI understand, sir. If thereâs nothing else, Iâll be taking my leave, then.â She gave a quick side glance at the door. âNow.â
Mana and Brent: Love and Friendship
Much like her friendship with Amin, Manaâs relationship with Brent has lots of banter. This bantering though is of the softer and more innocent kind.
Even after they broke up, both are completely comfortable with just sitting in silence together.
Around Brent, Mana becomes gentler and more approachable. Brent, on the other hand, is much more expressive and open with himself around Mana.
They started dating Manaâs sophomore year of college. Though they met through the musical theatre club, most of their bonding happened in the cafe Mana worked at the time.

[ Wait, what? ]
Grey eyes made of amber fury burned through her skull. A heavy sigh escaped his lips, like a long wind blown over the artic terrain. âYou are, Captain,â he snarled, returning his hands and eyes to his assignments. A tornado of responsibilities cast at him in paper.
âYou are to take a unit of your choice and conduct yourself in a way that will honor the CRI. Remember your guidelines, yourself, and above all, where you stand. I, of course, will supervise you as your commander and will step in if you manage to bring us to ruin.â
âIf thereâs anything else youâve forgotten, Miss Evans, let me know immediately. I hope youâre at least prepared in regards to the conference topics at hand.â
Wait, what? She blinked twice. She didnât remember being told that. Maybe Fraser told her but it mustâve slipped out of her mind. Shoot. Well that changed everything.
In the midst of the confusion though, she resisted the urge to roll her eyes. Of course, Fraser would say that. Rubbing his position of power in her face. Like she already didnât know he was (unfortunately) her commanding officer.
Steadying herself with a deep breath, she looked Major Fraser in the eye, refusing to appear intimidated. Millions of questions raced through her mind although she refused to acknowledged them. Not in front of Fraser at least. Maybe she could ask Brent for the details later. That CRI receptionist always seemed to know practically everything.Â
âNone at all, sir. And yes I am well informed on the topics.â That she could say with complete confidence. Why else would she have barricaded herself in the library for the past week or so?

[ Fraser ]
@xlternate
Major Connor Mosiah Fraser eyed her, grey-brown eyes made of the moonâs darkest side. She tore his attention away from mountains of mission strategies and unit information, all in the form of overwhelming paperwork, but other than that sheâd be getting nothing else from him. The air in his office suddenly became like lead, heavy and poisonous, as he eyed the young woman in front of him. He had a knack for being a slavemaster towards his unit, even more so towards the women. The younger they were, the harsher they were treated. Why? Connor, thirty seven years old with a sea of grey-blue hair, felt they needed more iron on their soldiers. If little girls were going to serve the Bureau of Courage, Resilience and Integrity, they needed to be gladiators of titanic strength.
Captain Mana Evans got under his skin far more than every other woman under his command. Sure, all women needed to be put to the ultimate test of endurance, but she was Darren Evansâ sister. Darren. The young man that led a mission to rescue one of Major Fraserâs closest friends, an Emissary in Europe. A paragon of brilliant strength, valor and dedication. That little girl thought she could hold a candle to her brother?
Wrong.
His voice was laced with hatred born in the darkest night. âIf I didnât need you, Captain, I wouldnât have called for you.â
Connor set down a pile of paperwork, eyes shut against the sight of Manaâs face. âHopefully you remember being assigned to Thursdayâs conference. If you donât, I need you to inform me immediately so I may finally put you out of your misery.â
âNow, in the last eight weeks, you have shown a stunning degree of resourcefulness and wit. I wish there were far more suitable candidates for this assignment, especially because this particular conference is one of extreme importance, but your quick thinking and mental clarity are needed.â
âPlease allow me to remind you that if you make even one misstep during the conference, Miss Evans, I will personally have you escorted from the force myself. So if you have any questions about your assignment, youâd be wise to ask them now.â
Captain Evans bit the inside of her cheek and flinched at the sound of the paperwork slammed against the desk. At this point in their...relationship, the tone of his voice couldnât bother her anymore. But she had almost forgotten about the conference on Thursday. Not necessarily that fact that she was assigned to this extremely important conference, but rather when it was. Thursday? That was sooner than she expected.
Still, she gritted her teeth, keeping her voice even while fighting the temptation to counter him with a snappy comeback. She was more than capable of handling this conference, thank you very much. Much better than Fraser at least if she recalled the last conference accurately. The last time she had been in the arena of oration and wits Major Fraser had messed up on a key cultural fact which almost closed all alternatives as opposed to war.
Russet eyes were shut tightly before she forced them open. She swallowed the words, resisting the bile rising up her throat. He already hated her for reasons beyond her control (itâs not like she could control her bloodline or the fact that he seemed to hate women in general). There was no need to give him one more. âJust one, sir.â
âIf you arenât going, then who exactly is leading this conference?â
Mana and Amin: Friendship
Mana and Amin's friendship consist of lots of sarcasm and banter. Beneath the sass though, it's safe to say if one of them is in dire trouble, the other will drop everything they're doing to help.Â
Part of the reason they get along so well is because their reserved but blunt natures. In their friend group, they tend to hang out in the back while giving out snarky commentary.Â
Amin is much more outgoing than Mana, but Mana is more open about herself than Amin.Â
The first time they encountered each other, Mana walked in on him hooking up with her roommate. On her bed. It was only when Amin's twin sister, Farah insisted they meet, when they finally introduced themselves.

[ ⪠]  âWow, you have really shitty timing.â
Mana Evans gave her friend the stink eye before staring down the hallway of steely grey and marble white. Most of time, bantering with him was a great way to blow off steam especially when her commanding officer could never quite wrap his mind around the idea of being a decent person to his soldiers even if he was in charge.
Now, however, was not one of those times. âAmin. Shut up.â
He rolled his eyes. âJust saying. How many times does this make it now?â
âThird time this month.â She groaned, running a hand through her lionâs mane of hair. She glared at Amin. âDonât you give me that look. I swear, I donât know what the hell I did this time. Officer Fraser was on my case like always, but not anymore than usual. That guy has it out for me.â
âWhen does he not? Everyone and their mother knows heâs always looking for some excuse to get you kicked out. Otherwise I wouldnât always be escorting you to your potential doom.â
âAnd your reason for doing that this time?â
Amin smirked as they approached Conference Room #4. âCall it moral support.â
âThanks.â Mana scowled before knocking on the door. âI feel so much better.â
With permission to enter, she stepped into the conference room, her nails digging into her palms. She couldnât mess this up. There was no way she could let her commanding officer declare her unfit for duty.
âYou needed me, sir?â
Phoenix AU (Part 3: Amin and Brent)
@thelightofnibelâ Yee, Iâm so happy you like them! Anyways, here are some more canons about Amin and Brent in the CRI.
Amin:
In this verse, Amin descends from a family heavily involved with the CRI. Both of his parents are Snipers and expected him to follow in their footsteps. Amin, however, was more interested in saving lives rather than taking them and chose to become a Scout instead.
His sister, Farah, a genius with technology, is a CRI tech.
He knows of Elena Mizuki thanks to frequent interactions with both Mica and Osi, but is oblivious to her admiration for him.
He is one of the few people who sees Mana as Mana Evans rather than as Darrenâs sister.
Reese is one of the few people whom Amin gets tongue-tied around. A few of the other people in this category includes his parents and Logan Myers.
Heâs determined to prove to his parents that he is more than capable of trailblazing down his own path and not the path they want for him.
Brent:
Brent starts out as a CRI receptionist, but after many interactions with Mica, Osi, and Reese, he decides to switch tracks to become a CRI ambassador. With his charismatic charm, affable nature, and quick wit, itâs hard not to like him.
As the bastard son of a wealthy but broken and abusive family, Brent was determined to become financially independent as soon as possible. He chose to become a CRI receptionist because one, he doesnât like fighting, two, he wants to help others and be useful somehow, three, the job pays well, and four, he is damn good at paperwork.
He is the first person Mana vents to about being stuck in the shadow of her brother.
While Brent welcomes Mica and Osiâs company, Reese unnerves him. Brent generally prefers to keep to himself and doesnât like the feeling of being read like an open book. As a result, he tries to limit his interactions with the Brigadier General as much as possible.
Once in a while, heâll sing for the CRI. His tenor voice convinces many that he shouldâve gone into the music industry instead.
