Who IS that guy anyway??

It’s Maximón!  - A modern version of the pre-Conquest Maya god Mam.

But Maximón is also known as the Christian saint San Simón who is, of course, Simon Peter, the first of Christ’s disciple. And on Holy Thursday the figure of Maximón “becomes” Judas and is ceremonially hanged as part of the festivities.

When addressed in Spanish, Maximón is a link to the spiritual world of the Virgin Mary and the saints. When addressed in a Mayan language, Maximón is a link to the spiritual world of both the ancient and modern Maya.

Whichever of those worlds is being addressed in prayer however, Maximón will act as a conduit to bring good fortune to the supplicant or bad fortune to his or her enemies.

An offering, however, must accompany the prayer.

It may be money placed in his outstretched hand, liquor that is often poured into his mouth, cigars that he may smoke, candles, flowers, or other things for his altar.

"Crisencio was born September 19, 1958 in Pitahaya, Sonora, Mexico. He now lives in Potam, one of the original Yoeme (Yaqui) pueblos.  He comes from a very traditional Yoeme family. He sings and plays the rasps (hirukiam) at dozens of ceremonies (pahkom) in the pueblos along the Río Yaqui in Sonora and in southern Arizona Yoeme communities throughout the year.  The Yoeme population in Sonora, their homeland, is approximately 35,000+ and there are approximately 15,000-20,000 Yoemem in Arizona, many living on their reservation south of Tucson, AZ."

Coming December 2014 - The Maestro and the Dance is a new exhibition that takes an in-depth look at 

the creative vision of Maestro Florencio Valey of Santa Lucía Cotzumalguapa and the world of Guatemalan dance culture. 

This special exhibit will explore sources of Valey’s inspiration and creative process as well as examine his connection to the cultural practices of the Guatemalan dance tradition at large. Highlights of the exhibit will include a vibrant display of complete costumes and dance masks from Valey’s own presentation of the “Moors and Christians,” a troupe of dancing devil costumes, family photographs, personal letters, and a selection of dance texts from Xipe Projects’ never-before-exhibited cache of Guatemalan Loas. 

Who participates in the danzas tradicionales (or traditional dances) of Guatemala? What is the meaning behind the dance? 

And how does Valey, as just one particular artist working within the tradition, incorporate elements of both history, and innovation? 

Explore these questions and more when Xipe Projects reopens this December with
