Writing Notes: First Person Point of View
In writing, the first person point of view - uses the pronouns āI,ā āme,ā āwe,ā and āus,ā in order to tell a story from the narratorās perspective.
The storyteller in a first-person narrative is either the protagonist relaying their experiences or a peripheral character telling the protagonistās story.
Tips For Writing in First Person
Once youāve decided to write your story in the first person, use these tips to guide your narrative voice.
Write an opening like Melville. Let the reader know youāre using a first-person perspective right away as Melville did in the opening line ofĀ Moby DickĀ withĀ āCall me Ishmael.āĀ Introduce the character and narrative voice within the first two paragraphs to create a bond with your readers from the start.
Be descriptive. In the first person, avoid phrases that keep the reader in the narratorās braināfor example, āI thought,ā or āI felt.ā While one of the advantages of first person is to know what the narrator is thinking, donāt get stuck in their head. We also want to see through their eyes so use visual language to show the reader around their world.
Stay in character. When using the pronoun āI,ā itās easy to slip out of your characterās voice and into your own as the author. When youāre writing, stay true to your narratorās perspective.
Mix it up. Starting every line with āIā can become repetitive; vary your sentences by illustrating thoughts or feelings. Instead of writing āI felt tired walking through the deep snowā, try āthe mountain was buried in snow, making every step feel like a mile.ā
Create a strong narrator. Make your first-person narrator an interesting character to make the story really work. Give them a solid backstory that influences their perspective.
Unpopular opinion but if you don't enjoy the process you should find a different thing to do.
And I think this is true in general but now I'm talking about it in the context of AI.
If you don't enjoy making art and only care about the end piece and how it'll look and how much traction it"lol get online then making art is not something for you, find something you enjoy from start to finish.
Same goes for writing: if you do not enjoy writing and rewriting and then some more and instead want AI to write for you, being a writer is not something you should pursue.
Sure, not every part of creative process is going to be equally enjoyable but you should get satisfaction from solving the problems along the way and you should get a sense of accomplishment on your way of "making the piece yours" and you should have a sense of ownership once you are done.
None of these things will come from typing in a prompt into chatGPT. And I am sad to see so many people are missing on the opportunity to experience the joy of making something with their own hands and brains.
#this is so true#i know writers like to joke about hating writing#but like if you're serious?#if you actually hate the process of writing?#why is this what you've chosen to pursue#just do something else
I really get the point here, I just want to add another thought to it.
I'm a little tired of throwing great words like joy and happiness around, telling people to only do things that bring them one of these two. Please also learn to embrace discomfort. Not to the point where you suffer your whole existence, but discomfort can teach you so many lessons about yourself, when you're willing to listen to the why.
I'm not saying people should choose hobbies that make them miserable, I'm saying that there is a high chance that there will be a time where you feel uncomfortable doing that hobby. Because you feel stuck. Because you want to get better. Because you feel sad or overwhelmed. Write anyway. Learn to adjust your expectations (I know it's hard, but I trust in you). Splash some colour on a canvas and just feel it. Because I believe in the end that's the purpose of art. To accompany you through your emotions. Happiness, but also sadness. Anger, joy, frustration... art is an outlet. That's why it doesn't make any sense to use AI. Because I feel it's against the entire purpose of what art actually is.
So please learn to sit with your feelings, embrace them and use your writing and painting as a tool to connect with them.
I really needed to read all of this right now. Thank you @just-another-star-47 !
To fanfiction writers in need of encouragement:
Maybe no one has told you this in a while. Maybe no one has told you it ever. Well, I'm telling you now: I believe in you and I'm sending you so many good writing vibes!! I want to see you finish your fic!! Because it is worth it. There are people out there who are dying to read a fic just like yours. Your fic is so good, trust me it's amazing despite what you might tell yourself, and I think you should keep up the good work! You can do it, I'm rooting for you!
Your fics are wanted, and your fics are needed. Keep going, keep writing! ā”
