These days it's mostly luck and persistance. There are three main things: Google image search, Bing image search and Yandex image search. The first two are fussy as fuck. If there is too much skin or it's just a face they often refuse to cooperate. There is also Baidu but it's fully in Chinese

Sometimes right clicking the image in Chrome/Edge and choosing "visual search" is better.

Sometimes saving the photo and uploading it is better.

Sometimes you gotta flip it.

Sometimes you gotta crop it (in the search engine, move the border around).

If it's more popular account being stolen from: you maybe won't find exact photo but often a different one of the same person. So you have to LOOK. It takes a lot of time.

Sometimes adding keywords or name of a specific website can help.

Your location may influence your results. Firefox has free VPN so using it could be a cool idea to see if you get something different

That's why: ASK FOR A VIDEO CALL. OR ask for photo proof delivered fast (if they make you wait it's usually sus**), with YOUR username on it not only theirs* and with the date.

*why? Cause some subreddits require verification before you can start posting there so it's easy to steal someone's identity that way.

BONUS about AI: most AI detectors online are shit. They will try to make you sign up/pay. They're unreliable. Some will claim everything is AI no matter what. BUT. There is fairly new AI model called Nano Banana Pro. It's made by Google. Every single image made with this one has an invisible watermark called SynthID. You can go to Google Gemini (their AI, yes you need to log in with your Google account) and upload the image and ask it if it has SynthID. The AI will tell you. To note: it only works on the images made with this specific AI model. So kinda useless but still. Be aware of the tools available to you.

To add: Yandex' search is AI based. And I did have it show me only AI results after I uploaded image made with Nano Banana Pro so maybe it can be useful but don't count on it.
