Her eyes rolled to the back of her head as his voice rang through. In actuality his voice was her favorite â it was home. She was simply trying to avoid conversation not sink into it. Xavier was a lot more than Cassandraâs baby brother, he was home, he was the only family she had left, and he was her best friend. With all of that love came a lot of protection â too much he might say, but Cass hasnât really been the kind of woman to welcome people into her life with open arms â not since she had her heartbroken, not since she lost her parents. Technically this was just accepting someone new in Xavierâs life, but even that felt like a difficult task to take on. How the hell was she supposed to ignore emotion and go on as if she had no heart if her brother insisted on delving into topics such as tonights? So, at the sound of his voice, the mere glimpse of his figure, she shot back whatever bourbon was left in her glass. As he ordered his drink, she signaled the bartender for another pour for herself. âA prayer circle? Do you want me to fucking burn?â She scoffed, inhaling sharply, as she released the breath, she released the tension â or at least as much of it as she could. That shouldnât have been the first thing she had. Well, no going back now. âIâm sorry.â The words would have felt odd if she was saying them to anyone else. Xavier was her exception, to everything in life. âYou know Iâm not good at letting people in Xav, you know that and you chose a text message to tell me about â whatâs her name?â She should have asked that before, she should have tried harder to care. There was no use in could-haves or should-haves, at least she was here now, she would try now. She couldnât ever shut him out face to face. As their glasses filled her body shifted to face him, resting her arm against the bar, glass in hand â her free one reaching up to grab hold of his. âTell me everything, really. I do want to know, I promise.â She gave his hand a light squeeze and offered him a smile â a peace offering.
Xav keeps his comments to himself, knowing that if he pushes it, itâll just to lead to another screaming match. Heâs tired of fighting with his sister about something so small; heâs tired of fighting with her period. Sheâs the only family he has left and if he canât get her on board with whateverâs going on in his head, then heâs not even sure how to approach anything anymore. âWeâre all going to hell anyway so might as well right?â Thereâs silence then and even though sheâs probably the only person that he could be his most authentic self with, he doesnât know how to broach the topic without setting her off again.
Thankfully he doesnât have to but Xav wishes it wasnât to hear Cass actually apologize to him. Theyâre not good at fighting with each other and it shows. âViolet.â His finger tap on the counter, leg bouncing to wait for the rest of her reaction. âI didnât think it was too bad because itâs not serious. Weâre just fucking around. Thatâs all. Youâre going to see her coming in and out of the apartment a lot so I figured why not tell the other person whoâs almost always there anyway.â
He gives her hand a squeeze, relieved that she doesnât take this against him. âThereâs nothing to say,â he rolls his eyes. âI swear youâre making this more than what it is.â
