Yet he has fans. That says an awful lot about people who love Merle Dixon."
[ -- Below the cut is my response. I do not mean my words in an offensive way, I have simply chosen to voice my own opinion. I am sorry, with some real look into the character, I have to disagree with you. -- ]
Really?
Was that last part even necessary? I value the opinions of others, and I can acknowledge that Merle wasn't a great human being. But how is our interest in his unrefined character in any way reflective of us? Are you implying that we suddenly support racism and sexism for enjoying a tv series character? That's not only incorrect, but insulting as well.
His poor and distasteful attitude -- IF ANYTHING -- is reflective of his father. You know, the one that was abusive to him and Daryl. Yeah, that one. It's reflective of the type of family he grew up in, the attitude he picked up.
Merle realizes that he isn't a wonderful man. He knows it. And he feels this is the only life he has left to live. That he only has the right to act in a certain way.
Michonne herself tells him: "You talk about the weight of what you have to do, how you can handle it. A bad man, someone truly evil, they're light as a feather." She plainly acknowledges that he isn't as bad as he tries to convince people he is.
And you're calling him a murderer. Yes, he has killed, but I assume that the way you're implying this you mean he's been a murderer all along. He was not. In his conversation with Michonne in the car -- Season 3, Episode 15 -- he confesses he had never killed anyone before the Zombie Apocalypse He hadn't even killed anyone when we first met him back in season one. He was all talk back then. He started his line of killing when he met the governor. To survive, to fit in to this group, acknowledging what he had to do in order to survive, he adjusted to their ways and their line of thinking. I don't think he should be judged so harshly for that. While his actions are distasteful and wrong, he isn't as bad as your brief summary of the character implies.
He's mean. He's an asshole. But most of it is a cover-up. Something unique to his character's way of coping with the hand he's been dealt. The world has been cruel to the world, so he's cruel right back. He decides to not get hurt anymore by life's bullshit, so he stops expecting anything to go in his favor. He acts as he wants, and takes what he wants.
So, will all due respect, I think you've overlooked a lot of this character's most important details and have chosen to simply be offended by the front he puts on.
Mind you, I'm not saying that he's a five-star individual. No, what I'm saying is that because he doesn't walk and talk like a victim no one thinks he is. A victim of the shitty life he had to lead, both before and after the zombie apocalypse. You don't have to agree with his behavior and choices to understand the point of his character.

The hard part's not about killing the garbage you fight against, but killing the ones that actually count for something."
