The Sole Survivor and protagonist of the story. A woman whose sense of justice is strong enough to always stick to her morals - enough to abandon her son who she spent months searching for. To atone for his sins, she vows to make the wasteland a better place and destroy the Institute once and for all.
Her last name means “fated to be a warrior” and maybe she was. Instead of her husband, Nate, she was the one who joined the military. During the fighting, shrapnel from a grenade sliced open her face and completely decimated her left eye, leaving her half blind. She thought her days of fighting would be over after that, but after the events at Vault 111, she takes up her gun once more.

I saw a man today, at that corner market you used to like. It was a busy day, and the street was crowded, but something in him made me stop. I was nearly run over by a carriage, and an old man shouted at me all the while as I moved out of the street towards the market, but I was far too distracted by this stranger to pay much mind to what anyone was saying at all.
He reminded me of you. I don't know why. He didn't look much like you at all, but he was tall. Perhaps because he wore his hair almost like you did. There was silver in his hair, but I did not find it quite as dashing as it was on you you. His nose was not so proud, rounded at the tip, and his eyes were brown instead of your amber.
He did not notice me at all, despite the commotion in the street, and so I stood on the corner for some time and watched him, trying to determine what it was that made me think of you. The resemblance grew when I only looked at him out of the corner of my eye. When reduced to the mere impression of a man, he could have almost been you.
So I did, against my better judgement. And for a moment, you were alive again.
It was as though you had never left. Like I was simply waiting for you to return from the bakery with breakfast that you had gotten just for me. When you would return, you would complain that I take my coffee too sweet, with too much milk that would upset your stomach. And when you would kiss me, all you could taste was icing sugar, but you would kiss me anyway.
The stranger must have felt me looking at him, because he turned to me. The moment he did, that pleasant fiction vanished. You were dead again, and he was just a stranger, watching me as I watched him. The more I looked at him, the more pieces of you seemed to fall away, until I could no longer tell what had reminded me of you in the first place. He did not look very much like you at all. Eventually, he turned away, and I lost him in the crowd. I'm not proud to admit that I watched for him for a time before I left, feeling suddenly very ill and very tired.
Will it always be this? Living in the moments where I am reminded of you? Forever hopeful that I might someday slip through one of those daydreams to be with you? Even if only for a moment. Even if only to tell me I take my coffee too sweet.

Okay but, quick notes from someone who grew up with a garden
Tomatoes and potatoes are in the same family. Specifically, the nightshade family (their greenery is toxic to most creatures). Because of this, if you plant them near each other and the bees cross pollinate them, you will get tomato plants that grow tomatoes normally but also produce a few weird, tasteless potatoes at their roots, and vice versa for potato plants producing a few really gross tomatoes from their flower buds along with fairly normal potatoes.
Point is these plants readily crossbreed WITHOUT RADIATION, so a tato being like a… weirdly starchy and dense tomato/potato hybrid is a totally plausible reading.
Further consideration; tomatoes turn red when their sugars develop (thus why a good home grown tomato is sweet). Very few foods naturally contain both simple sugars AND starch, and foods that do are usually regarded as staples wherever they grow because its a lot of energy in one type of nom. Sugars caramelize, and starch lends itself to frying.
Consider: fried tato slices that are crunchy like a fry but kinda sweet/tangy like good tomato sauce
I’ve written razorgrain oil and soap making a good (but smelly) shaving foam. Also, when FO4 came out originally, there was no brahmin milk, so I wrote that you could make a razorgrain milk, not unlike oatmilk.
Mutfruit are a blackberry and raspberry cross in my mind (what does that terminal on the Prydwen say?).
The carrots are huge and may taste more like parsnips, in my mind. Where did all the leafy greens go?
Carrots altering to taste like parsnips would be interesting, considering they’re not in the same family. Parsnips are actually in the same family as parsley, despite their similarity to carrots in look. BUT! Say we run with this, it’s important to remember that the greens of a carrot are entirely edible and actually can be QUITE delicious. So, if we run with the idea that carrots crossed with parsnips at some point and the root took on the sweeter flavor of a parsnip, imagine if the greens kept that characteristic carrot-y flavor but with the background herbatiousness of parsley, and it’s commonly used as an herb both in cooking and tea?
Another interesting consideration would be the fact that carrots already have a rainbow of mutations in the real world [no, really, carrots naturally have diversified into a multitude of colors. Orange carrots are not the original color; heritage breeds of carrots are purple. The orange variation was a mutation that was bred way back in the day to venerate a specific royal house in Europe that was known as the House of Orange.] So! Assuming for a while that carrots were allowed to grow wild for a couple centuries and that radiation would encourage this proclivity towards mutation when it comes to pigment, having wildly diverse breeds of carrots that, depending on color, may have entirely different flavors, nutritional contents, and crossbred with different other plants to take on other aspects– becoming so wildly different from one another that they’re considered different veggies despite having the same root [ha] ancestor.
(The Fallout cookbook implies that tatos taste like a mixture of sweet potato, russet potato, carrot, and tomato and that mutfruit taste like a mixture of blackberry and blueberry. Take that as you will.)
I just want to drop that atomic gardening, where you deliberately expose plants to radiation, usually from cobalt 60, to see if anything cool happens to the seeds, is a thing.
The Rio Star grapefruit is one of the successes of atomic gardening. Farmers literally exposed grapefruit trees to radiation to see if anything cool would happen. And it did.
So radiation may have done all sort of wild things to plants in the Fallout universe - made them bigger, smaller, different colours (Nuka Quantum glowing grapefruits, anyone?), resistant to verticillium wilt… Yes, radiation can do very, very bad things to living organisms, but in the Fallout universe, plenty of plants have survived, and the sky is the limits with regards to fanfic and art of just how weird (or not) those plants get.
Down south in the citrus-growing regions, I personally like to headcanon that a lot of the citrus looks more like Buddha’s hand, mainly because that fruit fits so well into the Fallout aesthetic for me, and that it is very difficult and expensive to get anything resembling conventional lemons, limes, oranges, etc.
I also like to headcanon that yaupon holly has made a serious comeback in popularity, as America’s native caffeine. It grows wild near where I live and also makes a lovely ornamental shrub. It makes a delicious tea-like tisane with notes of raisin and lemon.
(I do also headcanon that chicory is often used as a coffee substitute, because I doubt that even nuclear warfare can eradicate chicory.)
Bringing back this post from a billion years ago because HOLY CRAP THAT’S SO COOL
Also in the last two years I’ve picked up a molecular / bio chemistry hyperfixation thanks to Phy The Neutrophil and Clockwork on youtube, and have since learned that citric acid is part of one of the alternate ways cells can make energy when the standard methods A thru C have 404red. I didn’t realize that citrus fruits carry something so quinticencial to complex life and its layers of contingancies for maintaining homeostasis.
Of specific interest to the Fallout community I think would be Phy’s video on New Gene Birth, where he discusses the theories we have on How Mutations Make New Code That The Body Then Utilizes, and Clockwork’s video examining what is going on with an apperently Indestructable Bacteria that spent a year on the ISS and didn’t seem one bit bothered by cosmic radiation.
yk what i hate though. is when i find a meme and im like THIS IS SO [cool intimidating mutual i never talk to] I SHOULD SEND IT TO THEM but then i remember ive never talked to them ever and so i cant just like give them a meme out of the blue and so the meme just withers and rots in my camera roll 😔

Funny thing is, the other night I dreamed I’d found a portal to the alternate universe where fictional characters live. I found Hancock again, and we spent the rest of the dream making out like crazy. I’m never gonna get over it, my dreams are seriously too cool.

Gallows Humor is an unmarked side quest in Fallout 3 where members of Lyon's Pride are betting on what they think Knight Captain Gallows' real name is. If the Lone Wanderer's Speech skill is high enough, they can convince Gallows to tell them his real name; Irving.

Here she is !!! meet the lady i often doodle in my Preston arts ^_^ close ups + her lore & relationship w/ Preston in read more!! (also sorry for the poor quality, i drew on the wrong size canvas and realised only 10 hours later T_T)
close-ups!!
LORE;
Lydia worked as a nurse pre-war and was married to Nate Shostak. Their marriage was more like an agreement, as they both wanted a child but they didn't have romantic feelings for eachother. They had Shaun and were happy about their family arrangement.
(Everything then goes on like it canonly does in Fo4's opening)
In 2287, after leaving the vault, Lydia is absolutely terrified. While many would see it as an opportunity to do whatever they want, in a world new and free from old-world rules, Lydia is the exact opposite. She's scared of everything that moves, she feels sick from the radiation in the air and she has no idea what to do. Her first instinct is to head to Sanctuary, to home, to see if anyone would be around.
Once she reunites with Codsworth she starts to feel less disorientated. Still scared and unsure of everything, but at least she has someone familiar around at last. She's determined to go find Shaun, and it's the only goal she has. Eventually as she feels more stable, she heads off to Red Rocket, finding Dogmeat, and then she's off to Concord.
Lydia constantly feels like a fish out of water (because she is). Pre-War she was used to following the everyday rules of everyday life (although had issues w them due to her autism) but it gave her structure and existing amongst others was do-able. But now, she knows nothing. And thanks to that lack of knowledge on anything in this new world, she's afraid to step out of line in any capacity (so yeah, never any sarcastic jerk, violent or plain mean dialogue).
As a trained nurse, her main instinct is to help people in need, which is why she storms in to help Preston and his crew in Concord despite having almost no experience with guns (had some thanks to Nate taking her to shooting ranges). Her deep desire to help others often causes her to be blindsided and she acknowledges her own issues far too late (or not at all). Despite knowing nothing about the Minutemen, she still agrees to help. She views Preston as a reliable person, and as he is a Wastelander, he knows how the society works and whats best for it, thus making her follow his orders with no questions.
Overtime as Lydia adjusts to this new world and her new role as the Minutemen general, she grows to be less scared and more detatched. She puts on a typical "customer service" voice and act when helping settlers, companions and anyone in need, but it's truly just masking and nothing more. Otherwise she keeps great distance from everyone, not allowing anyone to see her true issues and feelings...well...anyone except Preston. He's the only person she grew to truly trust.
Due to her inability to step out of line, she becomes quite the people pleaser, helping in even the most questionable cases people throw at her. However, mercenary jobs and chem deals are something she does deny, as they go against her own values. (....despite relying on chems in combat from time to time. Again showing she cares for others way more than herself.)
A huge part of her self-destructive nature, that leads her to be downright reckless in close combat, is the fact that for a long while she felt like her "adventures" in the Wasteland were nothing but a dream, a joke, just something she'd wake up from eventually. But as she grows closer with Preston, she learns to face reality and share her burdens with him, which in return helps Preston to open up as well. They're both people who were way too young, lost everyone they held dear too fast, and were under enormous pressure. At least with eachother, they can just be..themselves. :-)
(all the other art is by me !!)
More about Lydia & Preston's relationship ^_^ :
Lydia is a lot less distant, and is actually very clingy with Preston, often holding his hand, clinging to his arm or just staying near him. Despite Preston not really being a fan of physical contact, he becomes comfortable with it, only with her though. Preston feels very comfortable on rambling about his interests, which Lydia loves to listen to. She tells him a lot about pre-war America, and they share knowledge all the time. While Lydia is into horror and scary things, Preston isn't a huge fan of such. Despite that, he sticks to her when they go to scarier locations, and she gets to tease him and act as a "knight in shining armor" for him (she literally uses a sword). In general they get to act more their age (22 and 23), just two silly young adults having fun whenever they can, making their nightmareish situations easier to handle. :-) Lydia also struggles with expressing how she truly feels, which results in her showing affection in ways that many would deem off-putting and eerie (such as staring for long periods of time, using morbid things as affection "id live in your skin if i could" type shit, hunting animals/creatures and bringing "trophies" back as gifts) With both Lydia and Preston being passively suicidal, them being together truly helped heal those aspects, with Preston finding that strenght to live again and Lydia truly trying to be less reckless.
(the fact that this is my first art of them im actuallysick HSHDHSNDH)
