Small Roleplaying Tips For RPers With Anxiety
Over my past years roleplaying I’ve put together a list of small things I occasionally need to remind myself of for whenever The Anxiety™ comes to town. Hope it can help y’all out as well!
This is not an expectation: Nobody expects anything from you, and you don’t owe anyone 1 thing. You are here for YOU and nobody else, anyone who says otherwise needs to be cut from your life bcos u don’t need that. snip snip.
Who said you had to be the best?: I find myself often trying to just be the BEST because I think it will stop me from being anxious, but it really just makes it worse. Focusing on only being the “best” takes the focus away from the fun of it.
You can’t please everyone: This goes for more than just roleplaying, but there is such a component in anxiety that makes this extremely difficult to accept. Take a deep breath and just say it until you hear it. It’s okay, people will get mad at you, you will have bad interactions; such is life.
Icons/Promos/Art/Themes do not equal quality: I used to think I would never be quality until I had all those things, but really, it’s in the writing and interaction. I can list endless blogs that have beautiful graphics and resource, but the writing? I’ll pass.
Find your community: Probably one of the most important things I’ve learned. Surround yourself with bad people and you will have a bad time. Find the right people? Buddy I promise you’ll be having a ball.
Other people’s perception of you does not define you: Another really important thing I’ve learned. Every single person you meet will see you differently than the last, and it will always never be how you actually are. These people only see a screen and words, how can you expect them to see everything you are?
Everything is okay: And that’s it. Everything is fine. Your brain might be running itself all up but when it comes to the facts- you’re okay.

“Claire….very nice to meetcha!” Astral said in her very upbeat and enthusiatic tone of voice. She wanted to make a good first impression after all. “Any friend of my Lord is a friend of mine after all”
She motioned for her to make herself comfortable. After all thats a client’s number one priority: making sure he or she is settled so she can see what they request of her.
“So…what are you looking for specifically, Claire? Something more dressy? Battle-y? Semi formal-y?” She asked, whilst taking notes. Astral did have something in mind at first but wanted Claire herself to voice her opinion. After all in her heart, she knows the client is priority when crafting outfits.
❛ well , that’s the thing — i kinda need a bit of everything. ❜ embarrassing to admit , but she wouldn’t know the first place to start when it came to chinese clothing , let alone the relevant style over two thousand years ago. which is why she’s CONFIDENT that she’s in safe hands under the care of a supposedly unmatched seamstress , as she wouldn’t want to keep asking lady shangxiang for clothes to borrow. there’s a kindly smile dancing about her features as she speaks , wishing to create a positive first impression as well — especially if they’d both be encountering one another often. ❛ the only proper clothes that i have at the moment belong to lady shangxiang , so i was just looking for something a little more different. lord ling tong has helped me look , but there doesn’t seem to be anything , which is why i thought you could help. ❜ because wearing a leather jacket in ancient china was bound to cause SUSPICION , right ?
Astral was surprised at the request made by Claire. She wondered how she would go about doing this. Never in her life had she tried to do something this unusual.
“A bit of everything huh?” She mused, glancing over Claire’s attire to get a good feel for her personal style. If theres one thing she was good at, it was finding the right sort of style for each of her clients. She would try her hardest!
It was then that she had a eureka moment! What if she created an outfit that looked like Claire’s current attire but more...oriental-y and her style?
“I have the perfect idea for this outfit! What if I made a more oriental looking version of your current attire..but keep a couple of your accessories so it feels more...you?” Astral suggested. She couldn’t wait to get started as she glanced at the oriental crimson silk roll she pre-emptively picked out with her eyes.

Astral’s ears perked up at the young woman who had just knocked on her room door. If she knew she had visitors, she would have given the area a good old clean. It wasn’t cluttered per se, her area was more like organized chaos with rolls of fabrics stacked up on the ceiling shelves and a huge box of already crafted garments. If theres one thing Astral does get lost in, is creating outfits without thinking..and it usually working out half the time.
“Oh! I’ve not had visitors in a long while!” Astral said “Please do come in! If you need the perfect outfit, i’ll gladly assist you!”
She did take a glance as to what this woman was wearing. Strange unearthly attire by the looks of it and in such strange fabrics she hadnt seen before. Astral was most used to seeing satin, cotton and the like decorated with fine embroidery. Wonder if she’s here for new clothes?

If Claire had a Dynasty Warriors design (I kept her red vest thing and more modern items of clothing she has like her jeans and fingerless gloves. I had a lot of fun doing this :D)

There is more to Astral that meets the eye. She might be a powerful mage in battle…but what happens after the lands are peaceful for a time? Where can one find this young woman doing?
“Steady….easy…almost got it…and…there” Astral mused as she was putting the finishing touches to a garment she had been working on; more specifically a hanfu in the traditional colours associated with Wu. Tying off the last remaining stitches, she marvels at her handiwork within the confines of her room,
“That’ll have to do…I swear i had those measurements perfect the first time….oh well” She said, not before a knock at her door nearly startled her,
this whole marketplace thing is still a whole NEW experience for her — bustling crowds tending to their wares for the day , numerous tea houses emitting several different aromas lining the streets , && the general atmosphere which was completely different to the one back home thousands of years from now. as it so happened , lady shang xiang had been gracious enough to lend her some of her own clothing , a delicate hanfu in a shade of deep crimson , at least until she was able to find something more suitable ❪ i don’t think i’d even get away with my jacket , not with some of the looks that i’ve had. ❫ . lord ling tong had already accompanied her on several trips into the city thus far , but with his attention currently required at a war council , she’s having to make this visit ALONE. && where has she discovered herself ? at the doorstep of an apprentice seamstress , who was supposedly naturally gifted in the art of craft , along with charging reasonable prices too. of course , she can’t confirm such hearsay or not , which is why there’s a touch of nerves as she raps her knuckles lightly upon the surface of the door. hopefully , she won’t EMBARRASS herself too much.
