21st Century Time Travelling / FluidBorders / Auckland x Chengdu “A cross-border, cross-media, cross-frequency live experiment in manipulating the boundaries of real time” “这是一次操纵真实时间边界以跨越国界、媒介和频率的现场试验。” In our 2k19 World of Insta-connectivity, global time zones have lapsed into a vast online world that never sleeps. We have 24/7 access to vast canons of information and worldwide communications right at our fingertips. We can scroll into the halls of the past, dig deep into what’s been said and done — logged, time stamped, documented. We exist in within the ever aging present. But what if time was malleable? 公元二〇一九，人类世界因瞬息间即可链入的无垠网络而永动。我们滑动指尖便能遨游浩瀚的信息海洋，与世界交互；我们滚动指轮就能漫步时间的殿堂，探寻往事深处——登入、印录时间、存档。我们在流而不滞的当下存在。但，倘若时间亦能被锻铸？ On 27 July 2019 at 4:30 China Time and 8:30 New Zealand Time, two portals in Auckland and Chengdu broke into the fabric of time. Very few New Zealand bands can claim to be banned in China, but Auckland's Wukong the Monkey King – who recorded a previous album in Beijing and have songs in Mandarin and English – wear that badge. It's widely accepted that some of the most interesting things in life and the arts happen when cultures rub against each. Focus that down onto music and when genres are scrambled or denied, and when sounds from various cultures come into play you get Womads, contemporary world music and things like the recent albums by 75 Dollar Bill, Sarathy Korwar and . . . and this five-piece from Auckland.

Wade Wu-vocal, James Smith-gtr, Kyle Ranudo-bass, Jordan Neal-dr., Bryan-keys/sax
Overall, the release has Wukong moving more in a hip hop direction, and the music is still very aggressive with jazzy influences. Solar Power is one of the more mellow / melodic tunes, with Wade singing in Chinese.
The songs are rapped/sung in English & Chinese; if you look at the lyrics at bandcamp, it looks like all of the album’s Chinese lyrics include a translation to English, but the English lyrics are not translated.
