A study from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention showed that medications are actually responsible for over two-thirds of poisoning related emergency room visits involving children.

Despite safeguards such as child-resistant packing, every year, thousands of children of all ages are rushed to the emergency room after suffering from prescription drug-related poisoning.

What’s sad is that toddlers are able to reach their parents’ drugs, open the cap and swallow a pill or more.

When a child is with another caregiver, or the child was in another home, because of a play date or the babysitter it becomes more of a risk factor prescription drug-related poisoning will occur.

Did you know that a DUI ignition-lock program is most likely to go statewide after showing success in four counties in the state?

The program began in July 2010 when certain counties, including Los Angeles, required all DUI offenders to install an ignition interlock device in any vehicle they own or operate. This is a device that is an alcohol-detection mechanism that drivers must blow into to start their vehicle.

Since the program began, more than 43,000 devices have been installed. Although the pilot program expires in 2015, DUI defense attorneys and law enforcement officials expect it will be renewed and expanded statewide before then.

The program is designed to protect sober motorists and ensure that individuals convicted of drunk driving learn from their mistakes. The devices are proven to reduce drunken driving. Devices, however, are expensive to install – they cost about $100 to install and there’s a $65 a month lease fee.

California Vehicle Code Section 23152(a) states, “It is unlawful for a person who is under the influence of any alcoholic beverage to drive a vehicle.”

Living With A Spinal Cord Injury

Spinal cord injuries result from damage to the vertebrae, ligaments or disks of the spinal column or to the spinal cord itself.

A traumatic spinal cord injury may result from a sudden, traumatic blow to the spine that fractures, dislocates, crushes or compresses one or more vertebrae. It can also result from a gunshot or knife wound that penetrates and cuts the spinal cord.

There are two types of spinal cord injury: 1) complete, and 2) incomplete. In a complete injury, a person loses all ability to feel and voluntarily move below the level of the injury. In an incomplete injury, there is some functioning below the level of the injury.

Additionally, injuries can cause weakness or complete loss of muscle function and loss of control of the bowels and bladder, and loss of normal sexual function.

Spinal cord injuries in the upper neck can cause difficulty breathing and may require the use of a breathing machine or ventilator. Spinal cord damage results in a loss of function, such as mobility or feeling.

Spinal cord injury is not the same as back injury, which may result from pinched nerves or ruptured disks.

The Effects Of Alcohol Advertising In Teenagers Increased Drunk Driving Accidents

Research clearly indicates that in addition to parents and peers, alcohol advertising has made a significant impact on a youth’s decision to drink.

Today, more and more teenagers are drinking alcohol; this has become a major problem in the United States.

In a survey taken at Georgetown University, almost three-fourths of parents surveyed believe that seeing alcohol ads have a serious effect on teenagers and inspire them to take a drink.

On the other hand, the alcohol industry, The Distilled Spirits Council, responded with, “The distilled spirits industry is and has been a leader in working with communities to stop illegal drinking by those under the legal purchase age.”

In addition, they believe that many studies have shown that parents have the biggest influence over their child’s decision to drink. He cited a report by saying, “71 percent of young people said that their parents influenced their decision to drink and only five percent said that advertising inspired them to drink.”

A study published in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine randomly surveyed individuals aged 15 to 26 years of age. When asked if alcohol advertising on billboards, in newspapers, and on television and radio affected the drinking of these young people, those who watched more advertising drank more alcohol and the more advertising they saw, the more their drinking increased.
