The First Draft Break
I can’t stop thinking about my first draft, but I know this is what’s best for the both of us.
YES TO THE THING
Scrivener has this amazing thing where I can take notes outside of the actual body of the document. I love it so much. And I’m realizing, beyond the points I remind myself to double check later, I always ask “Should I include ______ in this part of the story?” And I IMMEDIATELY think YES! YES TO THE THING!
Bottom line: Your gut knows your story better than you do. Go with it.
Spending the day working in my granddad’s studio! Always so helpful to have a change of scenery when you’ve lost your motivation.
I have so many memories of being artistic and creative in this space and I’m hoping that will help kick this writer’s block to the kerb.

Shit I’ve learned writing my novel
Get the shit version done. Don’t edit. Just fucking write that shit and get it out of your head and onto the damn document/paper. Shine that turd later.
One step at a time. It isn’t going to get finished overnight.
If you’re tired or not in a good headspace, take a break, but don’t walk away from it. Don’t throw it out because you hate it right then.
That soul numbing terror you’re feeling? That shit is normal. Apparently, that’s just something you have to muscle through while you’re writing anything. You’re going to hate it, you’re going to feel sick looking at it, you’re going to be afraid to send it for edits. You have to muscle through that shit so you can get it done.
You WILL get through it. It’s okay. Take your time. Steady work is better than burning yourself out.
