Awful! These direct to blu-ray DC animated movies are rarely amazing, but this one is awful. The animation is so, so cheap and bad looking. Like, not only does it fail to even try to achieve the moodiness of the Mignola covers of the original graphic novel, we're talking like walk cycles that are blatantly missing frames. Just terrible.

Don Mancini is known as the writer of all the Chucky movies, a well regarded horror series about a killer doll who eventually gets married and has to learn how to be a good father do his non-binary child while still being a murderous doll. This is the only movie he has ever written outside of the Chucky series, and it's not very good. Comic artists accidentally summon a demon into being by drawing it, it kills people, etc. The monster suit is fantastic though, there's so much articulation in the face!

OK I want to be careful because I'm transfemme and transfemmes and transmascs share a lot in common but still have differences. But! The part in this book where Maia discovers the fetish "autoandrophilia" set off Kill Bill sirens in my head. I hadn't heard that term before, but I know where it's from. In the 1980s a psychologist named Ray Blanchard established the first transition guidelines for trans women in the US. The problem was, Blanchard was a huge freak, and part of his guidelines was separating "true transexuals" who just wanted to be feminine, traditionally attractive, heterosexual housewives, and the perverts who wanted to be any other kind of women. The latter category he described as men with "autogynophilia" a fetish for being and being perceived as feminine. The thing is, his test for autogynophilia includes stuff like, "does wearing lingerie make you feel sexy" and "do you find it arousing when your partner is larger and more masculine than you". And since Blanchard never tested this on cis women, he didn't realize that it would categorize most cis women as not real women but just fetishists with autogynophilia! He had discovered a very normal form of female sexuality in his trans patients and pathologized it into sexual perversion and used that as an excuse to deny medicine to trans women who didn't fit his idea of what women should be.
So when I'm reading this book and Maia say e are an autoandrophilia fetishist and are aroused by the thought of a girl sucking eir dick, I'm just like, that's the same fucking thing, you have normal male sexuality! It's not a fetish! Oh my god!
I know this is way too long for this assignment but whatever it's extra credit and that part drove me insane.

What surprised me was how much more I missed the sound effects. Without dialogue or sound effects, it was totally silent. I always fall asleep when I try to watch silent films, and I had trouble getting invested here too. Which was a shame, the story and art were great.

Hiroya Oku's action-heavy stories and computer-assisted art style lend themselves to adaptation, and Inuyashiki captures the comic quite well. If anything, it's an improvement, excising subplots to focus purely on the two leads, their relationships with their families, and how their use of their newfound cyborg powers reflect their natural urges. The long suffering father finally has the tools he needs to protect people, while the bitter teen finally has the tools he needs to project his pain onto others.
They go a little further than necessary making the main guy's family ungrateful and awful, but I still enoyed Inuyashiki.

This was very sweet. I wish we had gotten a little more about the guy outside of his journey with his sexuality, but I get it. I really enjoyed the author's afterword where he talks about how thrilled he is to be working with such a beloved BL artist, and that he hopes the book can bring the worlds of gay men and BL readers a little close together. Like, gay marriage has been achieved, now for the greater challenge; convincing fujoshi that gay men are real.

It's Billy Bat! I have wanted to read Billy Bat for years, I tried to read the fan translations like a decade ago but the scan quality was awful so I decided to just wait for the official English release and it's finally here! It's a Urasawa manga so of course volume 1 is all set up, but man, I am on board. What is the mystery of Billy Bat? Is it connected to the birth of human creativity? Time travel? God and Satan? I don't know!
And dang, I need to learn more about post-war occupied Japanese politics. I've read a bit about it but I can tell I'd be getting more out of Billy Bat if I knew who these politician's it's referencing are.

This was really good, but unfortunately my main emotional response was that it made me hate the movie. I had seen the movie some years ago and had some misgivings about it, but reading the original comic crystallized them for me. I'm a big Doom Patrol fan, but this collection wasn't great. The comics from the sixties start to get repetitive real fast, and the surprisingly egalitarian treatment of Rita Farr established early on in the series goes out the window when she marries that loathsome Mento character. And the 70s comics feature the new Doom Patrol with a whole new lineup aside from Robotman, which seems to completely miss the point of the Doom Patrol; superpowers as disabilities. Celsius, Tempest, and Negative Woman are just normal superheroes!

I am being 100% genuine when I say this is the worst thing I've ever read. The attempt to make a Se7ev/Silence of the Lambs but with the Joker comes off as unbearable cringe on every page, I groaned out loud when they revealed the Joker for the first time and he was wearing a black leather trench coat, the two leads have utterly baffling arcs that make no sense, the digitally painted over photogrphs and poser models look awful, just a brutally unpleasant experience from start to finish.

This was insanely sick. The art is super detailed and full of weirdos, you just want to look at every nook and cranny. The lore is complex and foreign, but clearly has an internal logic, you never feel like it's just throwing weird stuff at you for the sake of weird stuff. And it's all anchored by a well-realized lead character.

These girls are exhausting! I can't stand Mo, she constantly judges people to their face for their failure to live up to her political standards, insulting people who are actively doing political organization or fighting legal battles for eating meat or getting a job, while she just wallows in her self-imposed perfect vegan misery. And Clarice is terrible, she keeps moving forward with greater commitments to her girlfriend without being willing to make the accompanying emotional commitments.
Pretty good, I liked it.
