It has been almost 60 years since I have stopped at the scene of a horrific bus crash which killed eight children in the former village of Oldcastle on the outskirts of Windsor. I was there on that fateful day covering the story for the Windsor Star. Details are recounted in the book - My Life as a Reporter - available from Amazon. Although the crash occurred on December 21, 1966, it wasn't until 2014 that this memorial marker was placed at the site to remember the eight young victims. It's a day I will never forget and hopefully this plaque will not allow this tragedy to fade from the minds of those living in the area. Sunday, July 5 was the 56th anniversary of a jetliner crash near Toronto's Pearson Airport that killed 109 people. In the book, My Life as a Reporter, I recount how on that morning I was in the newsroom of the Toronto Telegram when the only other person in the room, a copy boy, took a phone call from a man telling us about the crash. Within an hour I had assembled one of the largest teams ever mustered at the newspaper to cover every aspect of the story. From Sandi Logan Finally got my hands on Cal Millar's book "My Life as a Reporter -- I cried at Disney World" (see comment for Amazon link). Cal was the senior reporter on the Police Desk in my 1977-78 period at the Toronto Sun Family, and we shared a lot of shifts and quite a few stories together. He was the consummate pro with a contact book worth every dog-eared page, listing everyone you needed to know in Toronto. I learned a lot from Cal, and I'm looking forward to reading his book.
