         Celeb status? Since when had Steve ever garnered enough media attention to be considered a celebrity? He had always considered himself an outcast because of his upbringing, because of a childhood filled with trauma due to what he was and, moreso, what he wasnât. Steve still wasnât used to the notoriety that heâd received when he took the serum, when he took on the mantle of Captain America. A near impossible name to live up to, and it was often that he believed that he was falling sort of it.Â
        Steve was a little lost and overwhelmed with all of this information. He wasnât an idiot or anything, but the modern world, and its conception of fame and celebrity, was still something that was hard for him to digest. There had been the starlets and musicians of his time, but celebrity had never been celebrated so whollistically, people worshipped the ground that others walked on and it just didnât make sense to him. Steve took a deep breath, eyes closing for a moment as he took in everything that was thrown at him. âI supposeâŚthat would be okay. As long as nothing is posted without my expression permission. I donât want people getting the wrong idea about me.âÂ
âI totally hear you,â Alexis agrees. âNothing gets posted without being proofread by you first. And now that we have that settled, I think you are entitled to a well-deserved breakfast, as promised! I am so looking forward to representing you, Steve, you will not regret this.â She clasps one of his hands between both of hers, then turns back to her presentation pad to pack up. It feels like sheâs just gotten away with something; talking her way into representing the second-highest-profile Avenger when her only previous job experience was representing her own mother? Definitely one of her more ambitious career moves.Â
âDid you know that you live within walking distance of one of the most popular brunch spots in your neighborhood? The best scrambled eggs in New York, and the mimosas are to die for. Iâll leave you to freshen up and get dressed and meet you downstairs in, say, ten minutes?â
Random thought I just had about Joy. I have become so extremely socially awkward after only 8 months living in isolation, which has been in a bubble with my sister, being able to make small talk with people at work/at drive thrus/picking up groceries, and being able to cal my aunts and grandma, and I was so focused on making Jack socially anxious I never considered how Joy has probably completely forgotten how to have conversations with people she other than her kid. Like. She can do a quick hello-thank-you-goodbye, and she can talk to her doctors and therapists about specific problems, but everything else? Friendly conversations with people she used to know in high school? Chit-chat with her sister-in-law? Trying to come up with an answer to âwhat have you been up to lately?â that isnât totally depressing? VERY HARD. Iâm going to make adjustments to how Joy interacts with other adults to reflect this. That is all.

âSo, um, next week is the one-year anniversary since Jack and I...â Escaped? Were rescued? None of the words feel right. âCame home. And my therapist suggested a, uh, a positive experience to try and purge the negative memories. So, I guess Iâm having a party. Thereâll be food my mom made, and pretty decent music, maybe a movie or something, I donât know, itâs basically going to be a high school slumber party, but with my six-year-old there. If you wanted to come, itâs at my apartment.â

@deathdawn:
          Thankfully, Steve knew exactly what generation that Alexis was talking about. Boomers. Thatâs what heâd heard Sam call them, at least. The generation that came from his, the one after the Silent Generation. Apparently, they caused a lot of issues in the political sphere, and Steve really didnât know where people his age went wrong, there. Itâd always been a family atmosphere in the Borough, but that was the past. Times had changed and apparently morals had, too. Screw Boomers. Steve didnât respect bullies, no matter how old they were.Â
         Steve may be all for freedom of choice, but he wasnât the type to throw bricks through windows unless there was good reason. Like the Black Lives Matter movement, of course. But there were other ways to rebel and sometimes they had more decisive action taken in reply because of it. âNever met the guy, but yeah, he was a good President. For the most part. But donât you think itâd be a little weird that someone run social media accounts for me? It feels a bit disengenuine.â Steve scratched at the beheaded mass of hair atop his scalp, squinting his eyes.Â
âNot at all,â Alexis insists with a wave of her hand. âItâs actually, like, extremely common for someone of your celeb status to have social media managers. Itâs not because you arenât a genuine person! But youâre just, like, way too busy saving the world to worry about your twitter mentions.â She flips her pad closed and instantly feels strangely bereft without her giant prop to work with, wriggling in place. She wants him to understand, but doesnât want to overwhelm him, either.
âThe thing is, someone as famous as you can have hundreds of thousands, maybe even millions of followers, from all over the world, all of them constantly posting at you, wanting just a second of your attention. And if you give them that second? Now, they think theyâre entitled to a minute, and if you give them a minute they want an hour, theyâre never satisfied. And if you say even the tiniest bit of a wrong thing they attack, and itâs just, like, so easy to get sucked up into it and let it ruin your day. Believe me, I know. My shipping heir ex-boyfriend used to send his followers after me every time we broke up.â
She perches on the edge of his bed, barely even touching it in case he decides thatâs a bridge too far. âHonestly, itâs better for your mental health if you let my team run the accounts. Theyâll still be your accounts, weâll never post anything without your permission, or anything you donât find totally genuine to who you are. My job is just to add a little bit of shiny pretty polish to make your genuine self more...palatable. Spoonful of sugar, and all that fun stuff! What do you think?â
OPEN STARTER || ABRA STONE
âDonât turn aroundâI said donât!â Abra grabs their arm and yanks them back around to face her. âItâs fine, thereâs nothing wrong, just...thereâs, like, a huge spider on the wall and I donât want you to panic.â Thereâs actually an old womanâs ghost behind them, and while she seems harmless sheâs pretty scary looking. Probably doesnât even know sheâs dead. Sometimes Abraâs shine is too strong, and the people in close proximity to her can see the spirits for a few seconds at a time. Doesnât want to scare anyone.

ââ RightâŚâ mumbles Wash. Itâs not new for him, having to check and re-check, because heâs sure right now that heâs asked why she was here before, and more to the point, that the answer hasnât changed. ââ Right, just making sure.â
Absently, he brings a hand up to his throat, running his fingertips along the scar there. Funny how something so small couldâve done so much. He swallows again and shakes his head. ââ ValerieâsâŚâ Wash frowns. He knows his sister isnât in town, but he canât quite place where sheâs gone. He dismisses that before he can pursue it, though, knows the rabbit hole well enough. ââ Sheâs out of town. And the guys from the VA, I donâtâŚâ He frowns. He can practically feel Caboose hefting him into a bear hug already, can practically smell the wine and cheese from Donut. ââ Theyâve got enough going on.â
Still, something about the potential outreach must have poked at a spot in his brain, because Wash is struck, all of a sudden, with clarity. That clarity comes in the form of the following;
ââ Honestly, I just wanna put on dumb kidsâ cartoons and maybe order Chinese. If you want, you can join me, but itâs okay if you wanna get back.â
Shit. Of course Valerieâs out of town. It sends a spike of hurt through Joyâs heart that heâll put his own trauma aside for the sake of the VA membersâ safety. Theyâre supposed to be there for each other, but he keeps putting himself aside.Â
âOf course I want to join you,â she says, warm earnestness infused in every syllable. Because she means it. She wouldnât have made this lunch date with Wash if she didnât want to spend time with him, and his having a bad day doesnât change that. âAs long as you want me here, Iâm here. We donât even have to talk, we can just sit and eat and watch cartoons. My mom and her husband are watching Jack all afternoon, so Iâm yours.â

The nod coming from the girl in front of her who seems to be his daughter, feels like a punch in the face. A punch that brings everything that happened back then. How he left his family, how he hit his wife, and probably would have done the same with his daughter.Â
He feels cold sweat running down his back. Should he leave? Is she just here for money? Does she know what he has done? Did her mother ever tell her about everything? What if she is just here to yell at him what an awful father and person he is? Should be right, of course. He has never been a good father. He could have reached out to her. He could have talked to Gabriela about it but no. He didnât. He was just a coward too afraid to face his own mistakes.
Now he had the chance to right his wrongs. To talk to his daughter and tell her how sorry he felt. That there was barely a day he didnât think about her.Â
But how should he start this? Just tell her whatâs going through his mind? Hell, he wasnât even really able to grasp what is going through his mind himself, how is he supposed to tell someone else about?Â
âYou⌠you got tall.â After a silence between them that lasted way too long, he managed to press out something but⌠oh my god how stupid. Of course she got tall! The last time he saw her she was 6. Now she is, what? 15? Thinking about how long it has been, just makes him feel even more and more guilty.
He has to say something else. Something that isnât so tremendously stupid. âHow have you been?â Yeah, thatâs not much better.
daddydaddydaddydaddylovemelovemelovemelovemeâ
fuck.
Thatâs all he has to say? That she got tall? âYeah, nine yearsâll do that,â Ava says numbly. Her palms are sweating and she wipes them on her ripped jeans. Aversely, her lips are completely dry now. She wants to cry. She wants to go home. This was stupid. This was a bad idea. Mom was right. He probably has some shiny new family and doesnât care.
âIâm failing band.â The words tumble out in response to his second question before she registers them as a thought. â Embarrassing, right? How do you fail band? Answer: I keep forgetting my oboe at home. I hate the oboe. The case is huge and awkward and doesnât fit in my backpack so I just leave it under my bed. I want to learn how to play the guitar but my school doesnât teach strings. Itâs the worst.â
He probably doesnât care about any of this. âAnyway, I guess I should go,â she abruptly says, turning on her heel and walking away.

         Steve didnât think he had ever heard anyone talk like this young woman was talking. It was soâŚindirect, so far from a clear and concise sentence, he just didnât know what way was up, especially given the fact that he had just woken up and his brain was positively foggy if he hadnât had his morning coffee or at least gone on a run. He did his best to focus on what little words he could understand with Alexis speaking so fast, but it wasnât pretty. The sound of breakfast sounded good, though, and his stomach grumbled in agreement. The boy could eat a shit ton of food, so that was absolutely a fair trade. âOkay, Miss Rose. What exactly should my image be? Iâm not up much for changing, but if itâs a publicity thingâŚâÂ
âThankfully, the demographic that will want to make you do things that make you super uncomfortable is rapidly decreasing in size,â Alexis begins, flipping her presentation pad open to BOOMER SHRINKAGE. She does a double-take at her own writing. âOkay, I could have possibly chosen better wording for that.âÂ
She flips to the next page: YOUNG ANARCHISTS. âNow, no one is saying that you should be throwing bricks through windows or anything.â She winks, because hey, sometimes people want to throw bricks and she is fine with that as long as he doesnât get caught. âBut, the pool of young people dissatisfied with the current US government is extremely vocal, and pissed. What you and I need to do together is briiiiidge that gap.âÂ
Flip.  ROSEÂ
Flip. ROOSVÂ

âI have been watching a lot, I mean, a lot of FDR speechesâoh, he was the president in the thirties, you probably knew him, exciting!âand I think he is your perfect role model. You want to be refined and, like, distinguished and composed, because old people love that, but your stances have to be firm and extreme for the kids. Youâre, like, super good at the firm and extreme part, love that you know yourself, but we need to curate an image of, like, dignified, quiet strength, too. Iâm not saying you have to become an entirely different person! The main strategy is to set up some verified social media accounts for you that can channel your passion into a cleaner, FDR meets Leslie Knope kind of public image. And from there you just avoid public speaking as often as possible. You wonât even have to worry about running the accounts, I have people for that, Iâll just have to take pictures of you every so often for Instagram.â
