Did you know that studies have found almost half of transgender men report postponing or altogether avoiding preventative health care due to fear of discrimination? Transgender men and women face numerous barriers to accessing preventative health care including economic strain, bias and discrimination, lack of trust, and legal barriers (i.e. insurance, marriage restrictions, etc.)
It is the responsibility of health care providers to follow current policies and recommendations put forth by agencies protecting the LGBTQIA+ community. All transgender patients should be able to expect quick, affordable, culturally sensitive health care from their providers. Check out this above resource that I created, using current research and statistics, to educate both health care providers and transgender patients. Contact me for a full list of references used.
Disparities in LGBTQIA+ health care is not just a problem for the LGBTQIA+ community - it is a human rights issue. Educate yourself, educate your friends, and hold health care providers responsible for providing appropriate preventative health care to the LGBTQIA+ community.
