People are too busy these days. Â Streets are too crowded and everyone's in a rush to get to their destinations. Â No one has time to be courteous to one another anymore.

ED 30
I chose this poem because of its simplicity. Â Despite being only two lines, I felt like it could be interpreted in many ways, through text, video and the like. Â The context of the poem is as follows: A crowd of faces at a metro station are indistinguishable from one another, like a giant blur or ghost of faces. Similarly, petals become invisible or translucent after a rain shower, and seem to disintegrate onto the branch, a ghost of what it used to be. Â
To counteract this, I decided to identify people in the crowd and have them share a snippet of their story so that they stand out, instead of blending in.
The untold stories of UCI students. Â No longer are they an apparition, a ghost of themselves.
âHI, Iâm Quy Quinn. I am a UCI student. Before coming to Irvine, I did not know what a quesadilla was.â
âI am Liz Tuttle. I am a UCI student. Â When I am not a UCI student, I am killing myself by working 9-hour shifts at an early childhood daycare. This is who I am. I stand out in the crowd.â
I made her say this.

A dramatic reading done by my roommate.
The End is near
I leave Saturday. How can two months be almost gone? It feels like I just started classes at Cambridge. I donât want my time in Europe and the Travel-Study program  to end, but part of me knows that to fully enjoy the opportunity, it has be finite. So I am sad that it is coming to an end, but happy that I was able to have this opportunity. For anybody thinking of doing one of the many UCI Travel-Study Program, please do. They donât only go to Cambridge, and you do not have to be a student at UCI. I, for one, am not, and I have met many other students on the program both from other UCs and other universities. The Cambridge Travel-Study has been a fantastic experience.
I thought it would be appropriate to list everything that I have had the opportunity to participate in while on the program to a give an overview of how great of a time I have had:
¡     Live on the medieval campus of Pembroke College, Cambridge to get the full experience of living in the United Kingdom.
¡     Take classes at Pembroke College, Cambridge from professors from throughout the University of Cambridge.
¡     Take a 5-day trip to the capitol of Scotland, Edinburgh. Along the way we stopped at one of the oldest castles in EnglandâRichmond Castleâand on the way back we explored the ruins of the Cistercian Fountains Abbey. In Edinburgh we went on the Saints and Sinners Tower and to a traditional Scottish Kalee dance.
¡     Hike the beautiful Scottish landscapeâtwice. I climbed Arthurâs Seat that overlooks all of Edinburgh, and hiked the legendary Scottish Highlands at Trossachs National Park.
¡     Spend a weekend in London. The highlight of this was going to Shakespeareâs Globe Theater to see Hamlet. Other great things I did in London include seeing The British Museum, Sherlock Holmes âhouseâ, The Natural History Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and strolling through beautiful Hyde Park.
¡     A trip to Stratford-upon-Avon to see Shakespeareâs hometown and a production of Macbeth at the famous Royal Shakespeare Company.
¡     A trip with my Secret Intelligence class to The American World War 2 Cemetery, and Bletchley Park to see how Signals Intelligence helped shorten the Second World War.
¡     A visit to all of the major colleges of Cambridge, including the famous Trinity, St. John, and Christ.
¡     A walking tour with my class on Darwin to all of the Darwin sights in Cambridge.
¡     Visits to the Zoological, Geological, Fitzwilliam, and Anthropology Museums.
¡     Pool almost every night in the Junior Parlor.
¡     Being shown around the great town of Cambridge by our Program Assistants.
¡     Meeting some great new people and making friendships that will continue into the future.
That was quite a bit, but I hope I am not forgetting anything. The past five weeks have been some of the best times of my entire life. Term papers are coming due and finals are fast approaching, so I have to return to work soon. I hope that all of the students that are reading this are considering studying abroad. It has been a highlight of my undergraduate career, and I hope that anyone who is considering studying abroad will realize how great of an opportunity UCI Travel-Study is and will consider applying in the future. You will not be disappointed.
Some inspiration if you are a UCI student and are interested in travel--doesnât have to be the metro :P
Of all the major literary figures in the twentieth century, Ezra Pound has been one of the most controversial; he has also been one of modern poetry's most important contributors. In an ...
Update July 6, 2015: No matter how long it's been, this song is still one of my favorites!
An identity crisis song.
Who am I? Not just an apparition, a ghost of something.
I am a UCI student. I work at Gateway Study Center. And I am a very nice person.

âThe apparition of these faces in the crowdâ

A bit of satire.
This is the closest thing we have to a train station on campus.
âPetals on a wet, black bough.â
Like faces in a crowd, the petals blend in and turn translucent on the branch after rain. Â They lose their color, vitality, and eventually dissolve away.

The blossoms on the trees at UCI, however, remain full and bright in spite of the recent thunderstorms.
A sign of resilience?
âThe apparition of these faces in the crowdâ
It is morning. I just got off my graveyard shift at Gateway from 3am to 8am. As I walk back to my apartment, I see a crowd of students hurrying across the UTC bridge, faces indistinguishable from a distance. Â
