We once wrote about reasons to not vote, at least from an economist's perspective. Since a single vote almost never alters an outcome, what's in it for the voter? If a given citizen doesn't stand a chance of having her vote affect the outcome, why does she bother? In Switzerland, as in the U.S., "there exists a fairly strong social norm that a good citizen should go to the polls," [Patricia] Funk writes. "As long as poll-voting was the only option, there was an incentive (or pressure) to go to the polls only to be seen handing in the vote. The motivation could be hope for social esteem, benefits from being perceived as a cooperator or just the avoidance of informal sanctions. Since in small communities, people know each other better and gossip about who fulfills civic duties and who doesn't, the benefits of norm adherence were particularly high in this type of community."
when your husbandâs administration collaborates with russian oligarchs to influence the 1996 russian presidential election to keep communist gennady zyuganov out of power and rig the vote in favor of the wildly unpopular incumbent boris yeltsin, which resulted in a resurgence of russian nationalism that ultimately led to the rise of vladimir putin and his own aggressively autocratic nationalist & imperialist agenda which 20 years later will cost you the presidency of the united states due to putinâs government hacking the DNC and exposing you and your party to sway public opinion against you which might not even had made a difference in the end since you were just THAT unpopular and out of touch with the political climate of your own base

MSNBC's Chris Hayes recently asked a question of his Twitter following that was so heavily loaded it wouldn't be⌠by caitlinjohnstone
"Hey America, we need to ensure our power structures remain unrivalled for the foreseeable future, so we're going to have to try and shut down Russia's influence using ever-tightening economic sanctions, NATO expansionism, proxy wars and troops along Russia's border to squeeze them until they lose the capacity to interfere with our ability to crush China. We'll also need a vastly inflated military budget to help facilitate our geopolitical agendas and prepare for a possible world war, please."
iron man! transformers! king kong, star trek, the silence of the lambs! dozens of shameless war propaganda films barely disguising themselves as sci-fi or horror that were obvious enough even without this list! there arenât any real surprises here but its worth a read
David L. Robb wrote a book called Operation Hollywood: How the Pentagon Shapes and Censors Movies. This Film is Not Yet Rated featured a little bit of an interview with him:
âThe military and the film studios have colluded for more than 50 years. Anytime filmmakers want military assets - ships or tanks or planes - they have to give the Pentagon five copies of their script. And, if thereâs anything in the script thatâs negative, the Pentagon wants them to take it out. And so they negotiate, and take out any war crimes or foul language, or drinking. Anything that would make the military look bad. And than, after the agreement is made, the military sends a minder onto the set, when the film is being shot, to make sure itâs shot just the way they agreed. And then, once the film is completed, it has to be shown to the Pentagon, admirals and generals, before itâs shown to the public. Dozens of films have not been made because they couldnât get military assistance. So, people have no idea what theyâre not seeing.âÂ
Do you know? The model of policing in the United States has its origins in slave patrols.
Like Black people been telling y'all, policing is an extension of antiBlackness and white supremacy from the root.
And they say white supremacists âinfiltratedâ law enforcement. Right.

If kids canât socialize, who should parents blame? Simple: They should blame themselves. This is the argument advanced in Itâs Complicated: The Social Lives of Networked Teens, by Microsoft researcher Danah Boyd. Boydâfull disclosure, a friend of mineâhas spent a decade interviewing hundreds of teens about their online lives. What she has found, over and over, is that teenagers would love to socialize face-to-face with their friends. But adult society wonât let them. âTeens arenât addicted to social media. Theyâre addicted to each other,â Boyd says. âTheyâre not allowed to hang out the way you and I did, so theyâve moved it online.â Itâs true. As a teenager in the early â80s I could roam pretty widely with my friends, as long as we were back by dark. But over the next three decades, the media began delivering a metronomic diet of horrifying but rare child-abduction stories, and parents shortened the leash on their kids. Politicians warned of incipient waves of youth wilding and superpredators (neither of which emerged). Municipalities crafted anti-loitering laws and curfews to keep young people from congregating alone. New neighborhoods had fewer public spaces. Crime rates plummeted, but moral panic soared. Meanwhile, increased competition to get into college meant well-off parents began heavily scheduling their kidsâ after-school lives. The result, Boyd discovered, is that todayâs teens have neither the time nor the freedom to hang out. So their avid migration to social media is a rational response to a crazy situation. Theyâd rather socialize F2F, so long as itâs unstructured and away from grown-ups. âI donât care where,â one told Boyd wistfully, âjust not home.â

I canât tell whats funnier:
-The way they yell âRussia!â
-The fact that theyâre having a party in a shed with tires and other miscellaneous garbage on the roof
-The vodka induced singing and dancing
-The fact that itâs Russian pop
-The one obviously drunk guy in the bottom left corner who looks like heâs challenging the cameraman to a fight
-The other drunk guy who comes and tries to tell his agressive friend that itâs not worth it
The signs as drunk Russians:
Aries: Guy in Black Jacket and Ushanka
Taurus: Woman in blue jacket
Gemini: Guy who wants to fight the cameraman
Cancer: Guy that tries to stop friend from fighting cameraman
Leo: Guy in black jacket and beanie
Virgo: Guy dancing with drink
Libra: Cameraman
Scorpio: Guy in camo pants
Sagittarius: Guy in bomber jacket
Capricorn: Guy standing in the doorway, not wanting anything to do with this
Aquarius: Woman standing in the shed
Pisces: VICE news reporter
