All through my life what I’ve loved doing is watching movies. I love the escapism of film, I love stories. So it is incredible to be able to be in them as much as I am, to see them from the first stitch in a costume to the end product.

I like to think that we’re in the year of the black superhero. Like you said, we all have different stories that we’re telling, but … I didn’t have this coming up as a black little girl. Elizabeth Olsen + 2017 I think the thing that I wished was that I had maybe, I mean I don’t wish anything was different.. But what I would have told myself then was to be patient in choosing the next jobs and to believe the noise a bit and to know that this is a hard place to get to. It just kind of happened quickly. I had to learn how to make work choices; I had to learn how to pick jobs differently. I went through a few years of kind of just doing things because I was so lucky and happy to be offered opportunities. I just was so happy that people wanted to hire me and so I just kind of did things that, in hindsight, I could’ve made smarter choices that could’ve led to a different place. I learned in time and that’s good, I eventually figured it out, but there were certain opportunities that I think I could have waited around for, to work with certain directors and be a little bit more niche.

‘Everything happens for a reason’ is something that we have to tell ourselves all the time, because it’s good to have the idea that something good is around the corner.

When I look back, I don’t have regrets. In the moment I am really, really hard on myself, I’m definitely my own worst critic and can be my own worst enemy, and I’m trying very hard not to be that.
