You donât hear Eddie come in.
The trailer door clicks shut behind him, soft enough that the ambient hum of the air conditioner covers it entirely. You stay curled on the couch, wrapped in a blanket that feels heavier than it should, uncomfortable in the way it rests against you but not so much that you move or pull your eyes away from watching the dust drift leisurely through the shaft of afternoon light that peaks through the slats of the blinds.
Eddie stops when he sees you, when he sees the lazy slide of your eyes acknowledging him before going back to their previous spot locked on the empty space before you.
You can feel the way he takes you in, not with judgement, nor with questions, just a quiet understanding that settles between you like another layer of stifling warmth.
Has his gaze always felt so palpable?
He doesnât ask whatâs going on. He never does. Instead, he lowers himself beside you, close enough that his shoulder brushes yours. The touch is warm, steady, grounding. Nothing like the too warm blanket you havenât had the energy to crawl out from under.
He lifts the edge of the blanket in a silent question. You move slowly, like your limbs are lead, but you move. Sliding in, he wraps the blanket around both of you, tucking it behind your back as if heâs sealing the two of you into a small cocoon where only the two of you exist.
His hand finds your forearm, thumb brushing in slow, rhythmic circles. At first your skin prickles, goosebumps rising along your arm at the change in temperature from his rings and the rush of air conditioning as the blankets settle before the welcome warmth of his touch sinks in.
The room hums with a quiet ambiance, the soft buzz of the refrigerator, the steady huff of Eddieâs breathing, the faint rustle of fabric when he shifts to pull you closer. He smells like cigarettes and oil from the shop with only a faint hint of the cologne heâd sprayed that morning remaining. You press your face into his shirt and inhale, feeling the worn cotton of his work shirt under your cheek as the familiar scent of Eddie surrounds you.
He rests his chin on your head. His face burying into the crown of your head âHey.â he murmurs, barely above a whisper, the exhale as he speaks tickles against the tender skin of your scalp.
His fingers trace the back of your hand, following each knuckle, each curve, familiar and intimate. Your breath loosens, unwinding slowly in your chest where you hadnât realized it had been building into a dull ache.
âThought we could just lay here for a while,â he says, voice low and hushed in that way it gets when heâs trying to be gentle. âIs that ok?â
You donât give a reply outside of the way you push against him more securely.
The light outside softens to something gentler, the gold of the summer day muting into cool tones of blue and grey as night crawls in at a leisurely pace.
Eddieâs thumb keeps its slow, steady rhythm on your skin, constant and grounding as he lets you breathe and come back to yourself.
Eventually, you exhale, a long, quiet release you didnât realize youâd been holding.
You feel him smile against the top of your head, small and genuine.
âThere she is.â he murmurs. âYou ok?â
Thereâs still no judgement. No expectation for you to answer or move just yet.
Just happiness that you no longer feel tense, no longer hold the weight of everything in your mind throughout your body.
You lean into him, letting the warmth of his body and the softness of the moment hold you.
Eddie has things to do.
He's busy.
There's a grocery list folded in his pocket waiting to get crossed off.
But all of that can wait, because there's a guy carrying his dog walking right in front of him.
The guy's wearing bright red running shorts, and the muscles in his legs flex with every step. In his arms sits aâŚEddie actually has no clue what breed of dog it is, but whatever it is, it looks completely content with its life, tucked securely against this man's chest, watching the traffic go by.
Eddie has never wanted to be a dog more.
Which is saying something, because he doesn't even like dogs that much. He's more of a cat person.
So why is a guy carrying his dog the hottest thing Eddie has seen in months?
Why is he carrying the dog, anyway?
Maybe he's waiting until they reach the park so it doesn't run into traffic.
Maybe the dog just wanted to be carried.
Eddie can relate.
He, too, would like to be carried around by this guy.
He reaches his turn.
Eddie slows.
Thinks about it.
Then promptly ignores it.
Groceries have to wait, for now he's following a random hot stranger whose face he hasn't even seen yet.
Totally normal behavior.
Eddie's eyes drift down to those legs again, then slightly higher.
Yep.
Thank you, running shorts.
He misses another turn.
Suddenly the guy stops.
He crouches down and carefully sets the dog on the ground.
The dog immediately holds one paw slightly off the pavement.
Oh.
Great.
The dog's injured.
And now Eddie feels like an asshole.
Here he is thirsting over some guy who's been carrying his hurt dog around.
Then againâŚWhy does that somehow make him even hotter?
Eddie desperately tries to think of a reason to approach.
Maybe the dog stepped on a bee.
Maybe there's glass.
MaybeâŚWhat exactly is Eddie supposed to do?
He's not a vet or something.
He has nothing to offer here.
Then the guy finally looks up.
And Eddie catches his first glimpse of his face.
Of course.
Of fucking course.
He's gorgeous.
Like insultingly gorgeous.
Eddie's so busy staring that he doesn't realize he's stopped walking, too.
Not until the guy's eyes meet his.
Eddie immediately jerks his gaze away. He glances around, pretends he's hopelessly lost, then spins on his heel and starts walking in the opposite direction.
His head hangs low.
His ears burn.
Eddie Munson is, at the end of the day, a very weak man.
"He, too, would like to be carried around by this guy." đ¤Łđ¤Łđ¤đ¤đŤ đŤ
All I've got is Steve, flustered and bashful and embarrassed to be asking this total(ly hot) stranger for help, like, "Hey man, can you help me? I'm new around here and I'm trying to find a vet. Damn removal guys put a box down on Penelope's foot, and I thought I knew where I was going but I'm all turned around now and I kind of have no clue where I am. Are you even an animal person? I feel so stupid right now, sorry..."
And Eddie's all, "Wh-- Uhh... S-sure, umm, I have a cat!" *Grins wildly, suddenly realises Steve might take that to mean he doesn't like dogs* "b-but I totally like dogs too. Lizards, hamsters, tarantulas, whatever, it's all good."
Cue awkward AF conversation about where the vets might be, and Eddie offering to walk Steve there, accidentally revealing that they have to walk past his apartment building to get there, but happily realising that Steve seems to be memorising the location and he's not sad about it.

EDDIE MY LOVE
Can anyone recall the Halloween fic where Reader works at Spirit Halloween or something like it?
Eddie works with reader and calls her his Dolly?
Itâs smutty and dark and my brain keeps serving bits of it to me đ¤Łđ

so what if eddie munson is secretly a huge pussy about halloween?
he may like to write scary stories and tell those tales but⌠outside of looking scary to some puritan hawkinsfolk? eddie isnât a fan of the average jumpscare, and thatâs just who he is!
now being a scare actor, he can get behind; heâs in control, he knows how all the stuff works when the lights are back on, heâs comfortable and at ease there, so youâd think what with all creeping around and monsters he vibes with and all his scary tattoos, halloween has to be, like, his shit, right?
come to find out, you really couldnât be more wrong.
Darkest Desire
Based off of this nonnie request! Itâs a bit scarier than intended and I do apologise for that teehee. Thereâs also no smutâŚ

âhello, sweetheart.â
the silky smooth voice causes you to stop dead in your tracks upon entering your apartment, your blood running cold at the familiar cadence. no, it canât be? you think to yourself, swallowing the lump in your throat as you step further into the house. you turn the corner from the foyer and enter the living room, your eyes widening. there he was, in all his glory, sitting on your maroon sectional, lit cigarette in hand with his feet propped up on the black coffee table.
it had been months since you had last heard from him or seen him outside of your apartment, watching you at all hours of the night. you figured he had given up on you, had taken the hint that you wanted nothing to do with him, but you were wrong. that became painstakingly obvious when a bouquet of your favorite flowers got delivered to your doorstep with a card that read, âmiss me? - e.â
âeddie? w-what the hell are you doing here?â
your voice comes out smaller than you mean it to, shaky and thin. your heart is hammering so hard it feels like it might crack your ribs. seeing him here, in your space, after all these months of radio silence, feels like the floor has dropped out from under you. youâd convinced yourself he was gone for good. youâd almost believed it.
âwell, i came to see you, of course,â he says simply, like itâs the most natural thing in the world. he blows a slow stream of smoke from his lungs, those warm brown eyes never leaving you for a second. âlove what youâve done with the place.â

Garden Song | E.M
â Fresh out of prison, Eddie is intent on keeping his head down, complete his parole and get the hell out of Hawkins. Having to trade his guitar for a shovel in the Hawkins Community Patch Programme, heâs expecting a long four years. Everything changes when he meets the girl with dirt stained knees, rosy cheeks, and relentless optimism.
A/N: no warnings, reader has an unspecified chronic illness
¡â˘ââŮ â¤Ů âââ˘Âˇ
Eddieâs bones crack as he wakes up that morning. This make-shift trailer heâs been put in is a far cry from a hotel suite, but itâs much better than the hard steel of his prison cell bed. Itâs a mattress, and a thin duvet, which Eddie is immensely grateful for and curses this stupid groupâs start time at 9am. He sits up, stretching as he runs his hands through his shorter curls. He felt like a ghost now. Though his long curls were a pain in the ass to take care of, he missed them. He missed them when they took their time to buzz it off on his first day at the slammer.
âNever cut these for anyone, baby,â his mom would say to him at 5 years old, as she gently weaved through the messy, dark curls. âYou got curls justâ like your mama.â
Eddie stands, moving to his dresser and opting for a simple vest, already feeling the Hawkins heat through the window, and throwing on some black jeans. No groceries, great, he notes as he looks in the cupboards, those fuckers couldnât spare him a bowl of cornflakes to energise him for this stupid community project he was forced into?
Breathe, he reminds himself. He survived high school, he can survive four years of pretending to do some gardening.
The community centre was built in the middle of the trailers, all roads leading to. Christ, he was already sweating, grateful this building had som fans going, sitting himself right in front of one. No one really glanced his way, all here for some shameful reason themselves, sat chatting amongst themselves. Eddie recognises a few people heâs seen at Rickâs before, some older women, and a younger boy who looks like he wants to be anywhere else.
Eddie nearly falls asleep before the noise of the project leader snaps his head up.
âHappy Monday!â Debbie, the community offer speaks, smiling at the group sat in chairs around her. âAnd to those new here,â she sets her eyes on Eddie, and well Eddie hates it, âWelcome to The Hawkins Community Patch! Today weâll be focusing on reworking the wildflower patch near the benches, to foster new opportunities for insects to pollinate.â
Pollinate rings a bell, science class in high school with Mr Clarke going on about photosynthesis. He looks around, already spotting the free food and coffee table and making plans to head there first.
âMe and my team will be around to help at any point, and donât hesitate to call us over,â Debbie claps happily once and they all stand, prompting Eddie to do the same. He heads for the sandwich table first, stuffing a ham and mustard one into his mouth, while pouring himself a coffee. He notices the younger boy come up next to him, who shoves some cookies into his pocket.
âSo uhâ, is this like, hard? Or is it pretty simple?â Eddie tries to make conversation, gesturing to the others getting out gardening gloves from the boxes provided. The younger boy looks up, huffing out an amused sound as he walks off. Donât engage with the youth again, Eddie makes a note to himself.
Letâs just say Eddieâs glad his friends from Corroded arenât here to taunt him about being on his hands and knees, fingers in the dirt attempting to arrange these flowers heâs been given, a mixture of daisies, bluebells, and these tiny purple ones. He huffs, sweat uncomfortably sat on his neck as he pushes around the dirt, shoving the flowers in where he can.
âI have some more flowers for you! Have some of these beautiful cornflowers,â the voice makes him jump, blinking as he almost tumbles to the side. He watches as a bunch of flowers are placed in front of his poor excuse of a garden. He looks up, sitting on his haunches and finding the source of the voice.
Eddieâs not a religious man, by any means, but he thinks heâs experiencing the second coming of Christ as you kneel next to him, white dress bunched up as your knees hit the grass, sun shining behind your head like some halo.
âBees love cornflowers, because theyâre so rich in nectarâ and pollen most importantly,â you hum as you smile over at him, pulling your gloves on. âTheyâre also bright blue so, that helps!â
Eddie can just watch as you spurt out these facts, distracted by your voice, handsâ hair. Face, really. You furrow your eyebrows down at his patch.
âOh, I can see you dove right in!â You speak, looking over the flowers, âBut unfortunately half of the flowers are covered in dirt, the insects wonât get to them.â Eddie snaps out of his daze, before coughing and nodding sheepish.
âYeah Iâmâ not too great at the whole green thumb thing,â he explains, rubbing his arm tattoo a bit restless. Your smile never fades.
âThatâs okay! Here let me help,â you offer and start to carefully reveal some of the flowers out from the dirt, letting them spring up and reorganising the dirt around their roots. âWhen putting new flowers inâ,â you explain carefully as you empty the cornflowers out of their pots, holding the roots, ââhave to remember not to destroy the roots, theyâre the most important part of the flower, getting all that water from the ground and helping them grow.â
Eddie watches wordlessly, his mouth agape as you plant the cornflowers gracefully. How can you gracefully plant flowers, Eddie thinks to himself.
âStop me if Iâm rambling, I have a habit of just word vomiting when Iâve started something,â you let out a giggle, and sitting back mirroring his stance. âDo you want to try?â
Eddie blinks and nods, swallowing as he picks up another bunch of cornflowers, trying to mimic your movements. You watch, and he tries his best. God, Eddie hasnât tried this hard since he started learning guitar.
âPerfect!â You smile, and Eddie finds it in him to let out a grunt-cough, leaning back. âWhatâs your name? Youâre new to the neighbourhood right?â
New to the neighbourhood, funny, more like forced into the neighbourhood, Eddie thinks.
âYeah, got put in yesterday.â Eddie nods, voice a bit scratchy. Eddie watches your sunshine smile burn brighter.
âFun, I always like the new ones they donât find me annoying just yet,â you joke, and Eddie snorts before crossing his arms.
âYou saying youâre annoying?â Eddie tilts his head, and you shrug, moving to rearrange some of the flowers again.
âA lot of the members of the community think I could talk for Americaâ Sean always says Iâm too talkative for my own good,â you explain, somewhat rambling as you finish up the plot of flowers. âAhâ so beautiful! And lookâ weâve already got a visitor, great work!â You speak happily as a bumble bee flies over, sitting onto one of the cornflowers.
âHuh,â Eddie takes his eyes of off you for a moment before squinting to see the bee perched on the flowers. âThat was all you.â
You pick his hand up, your gloved fingers gently shaving off some dirt that had gotten on his.
âNo gloves, I like it,â you happily speak as you get off the dirt for him, âRules say we have to wear gloves, but getting stuck in with the dirt is supposed to have restorative benefits.â
Eddie doesnât really believe that, but he canât focus or even be bothered to question it as your hands meet his.
âHappy planting!â You smile and stand, brushing the dirt off your white dress which, Eddie is confused you chose a white dress but is happy to stare at it any way. Eddie just watches as you walk away, going to attend to an older guy who canât get his gloves on.
Eddie slaps himself mentally, eyes back onto the ground. He canât risk ruining his paroleâ god forbid have to spend more time in this place because he canât keep it in his pants. Heâll just have to ignore you.
¡â˘ââŮ â¤Ů âââ˘Âˇ
Todayâs project is planting in the vegetable patch. Eddie isnât thrilled to be staring at a bunch of wilted and messy tomato plants, unsure of what he can do to fix them. He begins to clear the dead plants, thatâs easy enough.
That familiar waft of lavender filters past him, and he canât help but look behind quickly to see you walking around the group, looking out for anyone who needs help. He grunts under his breath as he continues to take out the dead tomato plants.
âLooking great over here, Eddie!â He jumps at your voice, nearly tumbling off his haunches. You appear, today in a floral yellow dress, stained as usual.
âYou make the habit of scaring the shit out of people?â Eddie remarks, looking down as you sit next to him, smiling. Eddie wipes his forehead, feeling the damp sweat, and it was only two in the afternoon. Three more hours of this shit.
âNo, I meanâ I donât mean to,â you hum as you look over his plot. âGood progress!â
Eddie doesnât meant to flush like that, but he does.
âUhâ thanks, I guess,â Eddie manages, wiping his hands on his jeans and looking over at you. âHow long have you worked here?â
âComing up to 3 years now,â you reply, playing with the frills on your dress, âI love it. Itâs like Iâm not coming to work at all.â Eddie believes it, because the smile on your face could create sun rays.
âIâve never seen someone enjoy work that much,â Eddie snorts, smiling over to you, and you all but giggle lightly in response.
âIâm grateful for every day here,â you nod, and look over the patch, the sun shining happily over it, âPeople always here, someone always to talk to.â
Eddie thinks about your comments, thinking how you of all people would suffer from being lonely. You were practically welcoming in a person, every part of you. Him thinking you were beautiful was beside the point.
âIâm sure everyone appreciates you, making the effort and all,â Eddie speaks, gesturing to the group deep in gardening. Your face lights up, and Eddie wants to keep that expression on you forever. âNo one really wants to bother with us, when we get spat back out into society and all,â
You smile, brushing some dirt off of Eddieâs jean clad knee.
âNot no one,â you affirm, smiling happily before moving to help plant some tomato plants, where Eddie had cleared the dead ones. Eddie shoves that mushy feeling inside, and carries on removing the dead plants, not before a buzzing insect flies by and stings his arm.
âAhâ shit.â Eddie winces, standing quickly looking over the sting. A huge bulbous red mark over his bat tattoo, great. You stand, eyes wide.
âOhâ let me help you,â you take his hand and lead him to the community building, Eddie isnât sure itâs your hand or the sting making him light headed, either way heâs not complaining. âTake a seat,â you gesture to a plastic chair near a table, and he sits, arm on the table, looking at his sting.
âYou really donât have toâ,â he tries, but you hush him and sit on the table, your thighs dangerously close to his spread legs. You place his arm over your lap, and Eddie blinks as you press ice into the sting.
âLooks like a wasp sting,â you hum as you gently pat the ice into his skin, listening to his winces and being more careful. âThey like to nest on the trees by the creek.â
Eddie canât speak, just flexes his hand, his palm over your thigh. The view of your concentration is lovely, from this angle he thinks, he can see all your sun soaked freckles, and hair falling over your cheeks.
âThe creek?â Is all he can muster, covering his stammer with a grunt. You nod, peeking once at the sting before continuing to blot it with ice.
âItâs just out the back of the trees by the pumpkin patch,â you explain, âItâs real nice around this time of year, to swim in,â heâs watching you explain, somehow sat closer than before. Eddie Munson, he tells himself, what happened to laying low? âJust a whole lot of nasty wasps, but wasps do pollinate so they arenât all bad.â
âTaking their side, Iâm wounded, sweetheart,â Eddie muses, and you look down at him, letting out a giggle that Eddie thinks he would hear at the gates of Heaven.
âIâll go and tell them off myself, if that makes you feel better,â you offer, smiling. You take off the ice, taking out some anti-sting cream from the first aid kit. You then, bravely look up. âLike I saidâ the creek is real nice. Iâm going swimming tomorrow evening, if you wanted to join. I know itâs your day off.â Your words come out shy, and Eddie canât believe his ears for a moment, so he lags, before sitting upright.
âThatâ sounds nice, actually,â Eddie replies, and sees your shoulders relax seemingly at his words.
âSweet,â you sigh out, smiling as you finish preparing the cream over his sting. âLet that settle, and apply another round before bedtime.â
Eddie is reluctant to release his arm from your lap, and you hop down from the table.
âSee you tomorrow, evening.â You whisper the last part, as you walk back out to the group.
Eddie isnât sure how much he can lay low for.
¡â˘ââŮ â¤Ů âââ˘Âˇ
He sees you sitting on the wooden docks over at the creek, hand in the water as you stare down at the ripples. Upon the crunch of his shoes you look behind, and a huge smile blooms over your face.
âHi!â You wave happily, standing as he trudges over. âHowâs the sting doing?â
Eddie had almost forgot about the sting to be quite honest, head full of your stupid smile.
âOh, Iâm okay,â Eddie holds out his arm, âItâs not as swollen, just itchy.â You nod, pleased with that, and gesture to the dock to where you were sitting. Sitting side by side, feet in the water, Eddieâs mind quiets for the first time, in a very long time. Just the sound of cicadas and the water rippling against the dock.
âDo you like it here?â You ask, looking to the side to face him. You have this small white slip sundress on, and Eddie thinks about how the rest of your wardrobe must look like.
âI wasâ partial at first,â Eddie treads carefully, watching your expression, âI have the tendency toâ complain a lot? I hated that I was stuck here forced touch the dirt,â he lets out an awkward laugh at your frown, âNo Iâ not anymore. I donât hate it, I mean.â
Eddie sees you smile again.
âIâm prone to just wallowing. And I should just be grateful yâknow? I was stuck in a prison cell for four years, Iâm lucky to be here.â Eddie sighs, rubbing his eyes, âIâm glad I have a roof over my head, and Iâll be closer to seeing my uncle again, maybe my friends if they havenât all abandoned Hawkins.â
âYou and your uncle were close?â
âHe practically raised me,â Eddie explains, eyes on the calm creek. âMy dad went to prison quite earlyâ mom died when I was six.â
You frown at that, hand moving to cover his that was rested on the dock.
âIt was a long time ago,â Eddie trails off, and laughs self deprecatingly, âGuess I ended up like my dad after all.â
Thereâs a silence before you squeeze his hand.
âIâm sure your Uncle canât wait to see you now youâre out,â you speak, smiling, âAnd your friends?â
Eddie smiles a bit distant, shrugging.
âTheyâve probably all moved onâ I had this group Iâd play dungeons and dragons with, all little shits they were. Probably out at college by now,â
âPeople are closer than you think,â you shrug, tracing his hand tattoos slowly. âItâs only four years.â
âWouldnât expect them to stick around for someone like me,â Eddie mumbles, chucking a twig out onto the creek, the noise quiet in the large landscape. You frown, tapping his hand, before catching his gaze.
âYouâre so mean about yourself, yâknow that?â You huff out, and Eddie smiles amused, leaning back on his other hand, shoulders back. âIâm serious! Youâre so kind, Eddie. You always speak to me when Iâm annoying all of you in the hot sunâ and you always listen to meâ,â
ââthatâs like, bare minimum,â Eddie scoffs lightly, but canât take off the smile thatâs plastered on his face because of you.
âItâs rare around here!â You argue, laughing as he rolls his eyes. In a moment, Eddie barely catches it but you wince, staring back at the creek, and perking up again, and jumping forward into the water. Eddie blinks, letting out a sound ofâ something. Should he go in and save you? Youâre smiling, happily floating in water. âWe came to swim, right?â
âI uhâ,â Eddie looks around, the sun setting. In a hot summer evening, the water sounds real nice. You throw him a pout, head just out of the water and Eddie curses himself for being tempted, before hopping in, a loud splash following. You smile wider, as he attempts to shake his hair free of water.
Eddie isnât sure how the time is passing so fast, the sun nearly down and darkness filtering over the creek. He canât stop staring at your hair dripping over your chest, your dress, wet and pressed to your body peeking as the water ends and the air starts. You shiver slightly, shoulder touching his as you turn to face him.
Eddie pushes through his wall heâs put up in his head, and move a finger to push the wet strand of hair from your forehead. You swallow, smiling small as your hands steady on his shoulders. Eddie canât see anything else, just that rosy blush on your cheeks you always get, as he canât resist playing with your soaked dress sleeves. He canât hear his vow to lay lowâ his promises to himself to resist his urges for you, but theyâre deep now, deep roots that are getting more intricate by the minute.
âI hate when youâre so mean about yourself, I just wish youâd see how I see you,â you whisper, blink and youâd miss it. He swallows, faltering as you step closer, your chests together, heat growing.
No oneâs ever said that to Eddie, and it makes his heart shudder.
âCan I kiss you?â Before you can say yes, you push both of your lips together, Eddie fondly smiles at the cute squeak you make, focusing on your top lip, then your bottom. Eddieâs wet hands wrap around your waist under the shallow water, pulling you closer, which has you tilting your head to deepen the kiss. Eddieâs mind reels suddenly, from the daze he blinks, tightening his hold. What happened to laying low? Not messing this up? He had one chance to not screw up his life againâ getting involved with the staff at his parole sentence seemed like screwing it up, Eddie Munson style. You donât notice his reluctance, and it kills him as you hum happily, kissing his top lip and giggling as spit runs down your chin.
âIâ one sec,â Eddie breathes out, and makes some space between you. He watches your face fall, confused. Your bright, happy face has now twisted into something he never wants to see on you. âListen, I donât thinkâ this is a great idea?â
Eddie sounds pathetic, it coming out as a weak question while he still has his hands on your waist. You swallow, frowning, hands a bit shakey as you step back.
âWhy not?â Youâve got this relentless optimism that Eddie loves, and heâs expertly crushing it.
âIâ I just joined here. I donât want to get you fired or anything, is this even allowed?â Eddie rambles now, and you step away, the water cold, air making you shiver as you ease out back onto the dock, face crumpled. Eddie is quick to follow after you, his eyes anywhere but your wet figure as you slip your shoes on. âLook at me, please.â
You look up, shoulders shaking as you wrap your arms around yourself.
âI thought youâ wanted that.â You speak weakly, sad frown tightly woven onto your cheeks, eyes glazed. Eddieâs pit in his stomach deepens as he gets another look.
âIâ sweetheart,â Eddie breathes, trying to form words. God, he hasnât been this nervous since the middle school talent show. He canât form words, and you nod, wiping your cheeks.
âI get it.â You speak, taking off to walk back into the trees, Eddie standing like a fool, unmoving. As you go back into the patch, Eddie shouts out a curse, throwing his shoe onto the wood of the dock. He wishes he could speak to Wayne right now, he was always so wise. Knew when to do the right thing, unlike Eddie who couldnât even form words after he rejected a girl he asked to kiss. Rejected the lovely girl that looked at him like a person again.

The pain meds arenât working as well this time. You make the effort to get out of bed and take them, eventhough your body feels like itâs on fire. Shuffling back to your bed, you plop back into the covers, eyes glazed with tears that seem to just fall without permission, shutting your eyes trying to drain this ache.
Youâd come to Hawkins for a new start. Finally earned enough to move out of home, after years of feeling like a dead weight in your parents home. Making them take days off work to deal with you and your flare ups. Your mom protested, obviously, making sure your head was screwed on. What happens when Iâm not there and you need to throw up? What happens when you canât move to eat? This job was perfect, free accommodation for helping ex-convicts garden. Selfishly, you liked not being a centre of attention. Just a member of staff there to help, not defined by this thing that had boxed you since you were a teenager. No one knew you, no one to make comments about how well you deal with itâ no one to frown with pity when you couldnât show up to plans. You practiced gratitude, grateful to have a roof over your head, a bed to lie in while this splintering pain persisted.
Eddie was unexpected. Your joyful manner usually scared off the members of the community, but he always listened. Always nodded as you explained something to him eventhough he had a grunt hidden in the back of his throat. He was kind. You knew youâd been too forward kissing him, though your head had convinced you he felt it too. You heard him ask to kiss you, or was it just you scrambling onto anything that he reciprocated your feelings? He probably thought you were too much, too muchâ too much space being taken up.
The door interrupts your thoughts. You had told Debbie you were taking a sick dayâ she knew about your issues so she always insisted to still pay you regardless. She wouldnât be knocking by nowâ end of the day. You let out a whimper, another sharp pain blooming as you shut your eyes, the sound of the door ringing.
âYou didnât lock the doorâ,â a voice starts, and embarassingly for you of course itâs Eddie, trudging through the trailer. You canât find it in yourself to move, your head further pushed into the pillow. ââsweetheart?â
Eddieâs voice is like honey, a balm to the throat.
âIâm notâ just sick.â You lie, and he sits on the bed, hesitant. He looks you over, palm to your head.
âYou donât feel sick,â Eddie comments, watching as you pull the duvet over your head. âI wanted to talk to youâ about yesterday. But Debbie said you called in sickâ and I know you have no family here.â
Eddieâs words make you peek out of the duvet, to see his gentle expression. You canât find it in yourself to care about how embarrassed you are from the other evening.
âBut I get the sense you donât want to be having any serious talks right now, I get it.â Eddie murmurs, âCan I get you anything?â
You want to tell him to leave. Go away with his stupid voice and gentlenessâ but youâve been in too much pain to get up for some water.
âI justâ water please.â You manage, and he nods, moving out of your bedroom to fill up a glass. Heâs back quickly, a shy smile as he sits again, urging you to sit up and sip. Heâs holding your chin, in the haze of all the pain you can feel him softly help you take small sips.
âWhatâs the matter?â Eddie asks quietly, putting the glass on your bedside table. You sniff, sitting back against the pillows, knees to your chin.
âItâs a nuisance, and I donât wanna bother you with it. I deal with itâ,â you explain, voice scratchy. âIâm not sickâ kind of. But itâs just something thatâs always there.â Eddie has these eyes that make you want to just melt, spill your guts and let him take care of you. âI very quickly become a burden, to friends, to people close to me, because of it, and I, you donât need any more problemsâ,â
ââwhat I said? About how Iâve just joinedâ that nothing should. Happenâ,â Eddie speaks, voice quiet that soothes your running brain. âFor once in my life, Iâve realised I have no problems. Youâve made me feel like I can have peace again and Iâ,â Eddie lets out a laugh, hand playing with the duvet corner. âDidnât have peace for a while. But I have itâ and itâs with you.â
You canât form words to reply right now, blinking over at him.
âSo will you let me take care of you?â
Itâs hard, because it sounds like something youâve feared someone saying to you. Become something they have to watch or baby sitâ but the way Eddieâs staring at you makes you cave. You just nod wordlessly, and he hums.
âWhat do you want to do right now? That you would be doing if you werenât in pain?â Eddie looks around as he speaks, and you canât stop a smile that creeps over your face.
âI was readingâ For the Love of Gardens,â you say shyly, and heâs there, picking up the book and sitting beside you against the head board.
Eddie reads to you, your head on his chest as he tells you about how to plant certain flowers, when some fruits best seasons are. Youâre certain Eddie doesnât know what heâs reading about, but he reads with a passion like heâs been gardening for years.
Youâre getting sleepy, Eddie can tell because your head is limping down onto his stomach. He closes the book, and moves down to your level.
âDo kisses help with the pain?â You canât help but giggle weakly at his stupid joke, as you wrap your arms around his neck, humming. âIâm great at that,â you smile up at him, your faces close like they were at the creek.
âYouâve seen me like this and you still want this?â You ask, a bit insecure, but you canât help it. Eddie puffs out some air and pulls you in.
âIâve seen you,â Eddie murmurs, raising his lips to kiss just below your ear, making you swallow and smile. âYouâve seen me.â Eddie kisses down your jaw, spurred on by the soft noise that came out of your throat. He reaches your chin, lips rough against it as he breathes onto yours, before pressing one where you need it, where you want it. Eddieâs hands splay over your back, letting the kiss melt deeper, feeling him turn over every stone inside you, opening parts of yourself you had hidden where no one could find.
Breathless, you both pull away and rest forehead to forehead. Youâve never been kissed like that, so full it makes your head spin. The pain is there, because it always is but the smile on your face is also there. Eddie moves the hair that had got onto your face, hands petting it back gently.
âI wanted to kiss you while you were tending my sting, yâknow,â Eddie speaks, smiling as you giggle. âNever thought Iâd find a girl talking to me about how important wasps are, incredibly hot and endearing.â
âHot and endearing!â You squeak, cheeks heating up watching him kiss down your shoulder. He nods into your chest.
âIâm a changed manâ you talking about nature is like dirty talk to me, oh babyâ go on about how much bees love bright flowersâ,â
Eddie holds you all night, hand rubbing over your back, and itâs all so warm. Everythingâs not so lonely anymore, and Eddieâs so thankful he was terrible enough at gardening that first day. Terrible enough to get you to come over and help him.
