Insurances - Moving forward we will have our own independent from QuiltNSW.

Colour Theory - Thanks Sharon fantastic session. A great refresher for our toolkits. I will have to push myself to develop some colour palates for future projects and actually use them. Awesome seeing what everyone came up with.

DETAILS: There is no cost to members for the class but there is a $10 cost for a kit containing notes, colour wheel resources and paper colour chips. Payable on the day to Sharon Directly. Community sewing day - Saturday 30th May - 9.30am start Bring out your community quilt tops you have been working on this is the weekend to find a finish for it. Even if you have had it for some time. If you've been tidying up your sewing space and have odds and ends needing to find a home it might be a good time to bring those out as well. I've found a few that I've had tucked away I thought I'd bring them along to help them find a new home. Please bring your lunch and something to share for morning tea.

Future workshop - Colour Theory with Sharon in June. Full details are on the members ONLY facebook page. Please jump on the post and let Sharon know if you want the $10 colour Papers or the $35 fabrics kit - for the exercise. The guild will cover the cost of the session with Sharon you just cover the kit costs. It will only go for a few hours on our Saturday June Sew day after show and tell.

President challenge - 2026 - Due for August sewday Kona Wander - Berry Quilt n Co - has sold out, try Wendy @ The Next Stitch and see if she has any. If you want to jump in but are struggling on the fabric, improvise - pick a green and off white - if you need the 3rd colour your choice. Min size 12.5 inch if you are into it and want it larger that's on you. I like the 90 x 90 cm finish to really see my idea on scale and if I need to move it along to community it's a good size to support the wheelchair call out. Don't forget I'm going to have some little prizes to entice you as well.

QuiltNSW Sponsorship We agreed to support QuiltNSW with sponsorship and that it would be for Modern quilt categories. This supports our guild mission and hopefully encourages us all to consider entering more of our efforts into the modern categories in the QuiltNSW show.

Thanks for a whirlwind couple of days. I was excited to get some labels on a recently finished quilt and catching up with everyone.

We chatted about a number of things. We will have a general meeting with the AGM over the next couple of months on things we need to vote on. The current committee is starting to think about where we might like to head towards in the next year and are setting up some ideas for the year ahead for the incoming committee.

MQSA: Modern Quilt Show Australia 2026 - Financials are out. We have some additional funds from that which will be published in the financials at the end of the EOFY. Debriefing sessions still to be booked in the coming months and ongoing discussions on how to get it back on a more regular basis. Stay tuned for further updates.

Up Coming Quilt Show Buses with Illawarra Quilters. Sue Pitt from Illawarra quilters is organising busses for the Canberra show. The flyer is on the Facebook Pages.

Thirroul Library Display - Is on NOW for April at Thirroul library. Its children orientated and there has been some wonderful feedback from the local library users.

President challenge - 2026 Still waiting on the Kona Wander - Berry Quilt n Co, The Next Stitch have it on order. I have my fingers crossed it will be coming this month.

Future workshop - Colour Theory with Sharon in June. Stay tuned on this one. We need to firm up the details. Thinking about workshops for next year.

MQSA: Modern Quilt Show Australia 2026 - is all done and dusted. Thanks to everyone for all your support, Committee, volunteers, visitors and those who followed along at home. There will be some debriefing sessions in the coming months and ongoing discussions on how to get it back on a more regular basis. Stay tuned for further updates.

Up Coming Quilt Show Buses with Illawarra Quilters. Sue Pitt from Illawarra quilters is organising busses for the Blue Mountains Quilt show and also for the Canberra show. The flyer is on the Facebook Pages. I think the Blue Mountains bus is on our April Saturday Sew Day. We will have our normal sew days happening for the month. But you Choose your own adventure.

Children's holiday sewday: Many thanks to Fiona McDonald, Kate Finn and all who attended. The children all looked like they were having a wonderful time.

Some observations of the day: Thanks Milica "No fear! Yes, I'll just cut this up and sew it together; my feet may not reach the pedal and my hands are not strong enough to undo the cutter but I'm just jumping in here!"

Look out for the next one in a school holidays throughout the year or early 2027.

Children's holiday sewday 16 January 2026:

Is well and truly under way. Thanks Kate & Fiona for jumping in here and getting us organised for it, it's a great idea.

If you are interested in bringing some children along for a crash course in colour and a sewday just email the guild account with the details or reach out to Fiona McDonald or Kate Finn.

MQSA

We talked about some feedback for those who's entry didn't get juried into MQSA this time around. Trying to demystify the selection process and think about how the rating system works.

Some things to think about are how to put in our best efforts of an entry in. This might include being ready for an entry, having a quilt already finished and ready. Being ahead of the due date and not feeling rushed and overwhelmed.

That includes all the quilting. If one entry is finished and fully quilted and if mine isn't I might be marked down as the quilting will finish it off and provide detail. The Jury can only rate and score what is in front of them in the photo. Its not personal. The Jury do not know who the maker is they are only looking at your photo and the score card - it is subjective. You need to have a good clear photo of your quilt.

By setting the Presidents Challenge again I'm trying to set the scene of a deadline, some parameters around a possible entry for a modern quilt show or category in a standard show. An opportunity to think about where you are at in your modern quilting and how to crack the door to get your next entry juried in for hanging.

Plus 1 other colour OR print of your choice.

Hero the 2 colours of the year.

1. Must be MODERN

2. Any category - improv, modern traditional, minimalism, maximalism, negative space, applique.

3. Min size 12 1/2 square or upto a queen sizing.

4. Finish it! Have it quilted and bound.

Due: MAY SATURDAY SEWDAY

The COTY fabrics are due in shops late Jan possibly into Feb. You've got a month to hit your sketch pads and come up with some ideas. And plot out where you are going.

There will be prizes...

Think innovation, contrast, be bold in your direction, how are you going to execute it Push your boundaries. 🙂

Children’s Quilting Workshop

The Guild is offering a Quilting sew day on 16th January 2026 - School Holidays

@Kate Finn will be running the workshop, assisted by Lily.

Maximum of 12 children, aged from 5-18 on the day.

Children will need to be accompanied by a Guild member. The cost is free, however some basic supplies (including a machine) will be necessary. Once we have participants, a small requirements list will be provided.

Everyone to bring own lunch, morning tea will be provided.

The children attending can be grandchildren, neighbour’s children, other family members or any child that is interested in sewing.

If you are interested in attending, please send an email to the guild email address, with your name and the children’s names and ages.

We are excited to offer this workshop and hope to encourage more children to gain skills in sewing and have a fun experience.

This event will be on our usual sew day. Other members, without children are free to attend as I’m sure more hands will be an asset.

I'm looking forward to having a couple of creative sew days and catching up with everyone. I will be spending some time basting on Friday. If you want to come and give me a hand a do a couple together you know where I will be with pins, spray and batting in hand. Bring a couple of your own along too. We can make it a basting party.

October has been a whirlwind of sew days and retreat this weekend.

Friday Sew day we had Hans attend for machine servicing and some goodies available. We will get this organised again for next year. Keep your eye out for it - my machine is purring like a kitten. We did purchase a circular cutter - available to all members - get your name on the list if you want to test it out.

Zoe has written an article about us which is lovely to see some of our quilts highlighting our group to the broader community. Thanks Zoe lovely to see us published.

Retreat:

Sigh. Sign of a fabulous weekend sitting at home on the couch in the aftermath so weary but with a full cup and a good top up of get it done.... what a wonderful weekend of sewing, laughter, eating, laughing and chatting all things quilty.

Here are a few pics of some of the shenanigans. Wonderful to see all the amazing quilts progressing, pouches made and techniques shared. It never ceases to amaze me the variety quilts and techniques and the wash of colour around the room.

Thank you to the Retreat sub-committee - Julie Street-Smith, Karen Bulbert, Heather Fumini and Julie Trickett. You have all pulled off another fabulous retreat.

We all greatly appreciate your efforts each year in making retreat such a successful weekend.

That's 2 weeks away! If you are interested you have 2 good weeks to whip up something modern. You just need the quilt top done and be ready to provide measurements on your eform entry - don't forget to get a good clear photo to upload.

I worked on my entry at retreat it is a point in time for me. I'm relatively new to modern quilting I've been participating in the Tara Faughnan Block Studies Collective 2 & 3 - My entry is a point in time of where I'm at and what's currently influencing me in my quilty life.
