I miss late night phone calls. Hearing another insomniac tell me about their day, so I can do the same. Sharing songs with each other by holding the phone up to the radio speaker. The loneliness of the day couldn't possibly withstand our nocturnal solidarity.

Until it could, once limited character text messages replaced the inflection, the affectation inherent in semi coherent conversation.

We were sold technology with a promise that it would bring us together, but we find ourselves stranded farther away than ever as we package the best version of our Selves on the latest short form video app. We yap, with or without a script and we find not solidarity but shallow validation in likes, shares, and comments.

Some can monetize our phony authenticity but most are just consumers consuming whatever slop the machine feeds us.

We lament that the next generations lack the skills to spell, much less have a bit of media literacy, but isn't that our legacy? Shortcuts and life hacks discourage us from discourse and reward the most shallow performance of wealth and fame.

I just thought of this post, which was actually how I learned what Dark Patterns are, because I tried to cancel my Adobe Acrobat subscription, and it took much longer than I anticipated because several times throughout the process it felt like it was intentionally trying to trick me into thinking I'd cancelled my subscription when I actually hadn't yet.

Sigh. Every day I am so grateful to have discovered Dalida while I was studying French at University of New Orleans during the Spring of 2005. When I fled New Orleans a few months later due to Hurricane Katrina, I brought very little with me besides a stack of CDs of her songs that I had downloaded from Limewire, lol. My French wasn't very strong, but her amazing voice made me want to learn more.

The music, from her early songs in the 1950s to her disco period to more recent house remixes, is forever enchanting to me. It reminds me of that devastating season when I was displaced from my beloved New Orleans and all I really had to hold onto was Dalida. It's no exaggeration to say she saved my life.
