14 years ago when I had recently moved to Alaska, I went hiking with an Aleut friend, and she pointed to a feather lying on the ground and said "hey that's a bald eagle tail feather, you should grab it!" and I was like "uhh I'm very white and that's very illegal" and she went "they're fuckin everywhere up here man. I have 20." so she grabs it off the ground and hands it to me and says "there, now it's a ceremonial gift from an indigenous person."
and I'm like, okay, cool, I guess this is how we do things in Alaska. nice.
so I keep this bald eagle tail feather around for years. display it in my home among other cherished memorabilia from places I've lived and visited, etc.
on a whim, I have just now looked it up. there is no exemption to that law for a ceremonial gift from an indigenous person. the last 7 years I lived in the US, I was technically a bald eagle poacher.
probably a good thing I don't intend to move back there anytime soon. I wonder what the statute of limitations is on bird crimes.

As an Indigenous person, it continues to astound me that there are such strict laws (written by White people) in our name, laws against...picking up things just found on the ground. Like, stop pretending this is "for" us. We don't want this.
so, for clarity, that's not what this is. the law against possessing feathers is an anti-poaching measure, derived from a North American treaty protecting certain migratory bird species from hunting. that treaty has an exemption for indigenous people to allow tribes that use eagle feathers in ceremonial or religious practices to continue doing so.
i used to collect feathers (illegally) as a teenager and the thing is that it's incredibly important for feathers from wild birds to be illegal to possess because it ensures that they never become fashionable to wear. the reason we passed the migratory bird act was because the american and european fashion industry was driving species to extinction in a timespan of years. not just decades. the ecological devastation of exporting birds for hats was absolutely insane and people were watching wetlands and forests and meadows just empty out in realtime. look at the wikipedia article for the plume trade.
the law against 'picking feathers up off the ground' means that you can't go shoot an eagle then sell the feathers on etsy by saying you 'just found them'. you can't own them no matter where they came from, which makes sure that they're not going to come from any birds killed and then secretly disposed of.
these laws, as harsh and ridiculous as they seem, saved flamingos, spoonbills, egrets, and all kinds of hawks and eagles from extinction. the minute these laws weaken and people can make money off killing them again, they're fucked.
this is one of those "no actually this regulation exists for a reason" laws much like work place safety and building fire codes (that Republicans keep trying to roll back) and is written in blood just like them as well. it's just not human blood this time, and the fact that people actually cared enough about long term future over short term profit to get it put in place is nothing short of astonishing. That it didn't get put in place in time to save several species is heart breaking.

so my eldest brother, who is a moron, has been playing soldier with his moron friends in the deserts of texas for the last year preparing for the collapse of civilization if biden won (lol). they were burying food and ammo stashes out in the desert, running drills, crazy stuff
this included getting a cb license so he could be their lifeline to other groups of white idiots when the cell towers all went offline. wouldnāt want to violate federal law while communicating with your resistance groups after the fall of the federal government i guess.
anyways, you would assume given that theyāve been prepping for the end of the world for at least a year theyāre well situated to ride out the rolling blackouts right?

their plan for cooking and heating during an extended power outage was natural gas, but like a lot of homes their gas service is out. the food in their freezer and fridge is already toast due to the power outrages, so theyāre down to canned stuff, but thereās a catch.
they can get into the pull top cans just fine, but the ones that require an opener? their only can opener is electric. so a good 3/4 of his canned food store is inaccessible to him unless he goes after it with a knife, which i sincerely hope he does.
so captain survival was eating unheated ravioli out of a can yesterday because i guess he doesnāt know how to start a fire? they have a fire pit but it too is gas fired.
he told my mom theyāre probably going to break into the survival buckets soon. iām sure thatās great food.
he told my mom that the blackout is due to texas switching everything to āwind powerā but that he didnāt discount that the government was doing this on purpose. if you can figure out why theyād arbitrarily freeze out a giant state hey points to you.
the saving grace in all this is heās having to ration his phone usage so he canāt sit on the phone with my mom for hours crying about it. heās forced to sit there and talk to his wife, who is almost as dumb as he is.

heās tried contacting his best friend in his little larping group, but heās gone to ground. i sincerely hope that means he thinks this is the start of the great purge or whatever and heās disappeared to the mountains to evade fema and child support bailiffs

For additional context: the Spanish flu spread like wildfire amongst American troops at the end of the war and they often brought it home and/or contracted it on their way home. I have come across so many historical burials of WW1 soldiers who died that way. Of the 105 million people living in the U.S., 20 million of them contracted the Spanish flu and it disproportionately killed and permanently disabled young people.
This country is a farce and this "trial" is a travesty. They pinned it on a random guy and are slow-walking it as openly and and unapologetically incompetently as possible because they can. "What are you gonna do about it?" At best they steal multiple years from this man's life before he's exonerated, at worst they kill him and rule it a suicide. God Damn America.

It's Juneteenth, I'm a Black Texan, descendant of enslaved Black Texans. Texas is the only state that fought two different wars to protect slavery and chattel slavery ended the last for it. Juneteenth to me is to celebrate that part of overt white supremacy coming to an end, but it was not the end of white supremacy. It did not stop, with the lynching, the police violence, the redlining, the environmental racism, the segregation. Juneteenth represents a good win aganist the fight against white supremacy, but it's not over.
And for this Juneteenth, I ask for help for my friends that are the victims of this same US white supremacy. Not just today, but everyday Gazans deserve any type of help that you can give them. The technology that is used to segregate and attack and police and destroy Palestinians is the same technology that is sold to Texas to be used for the border patrol and to harass and control immigrants and border communities. This is one, connected fight aganist white supremacy and US control and destruction of Black and Brown bodies. So I ask today if you could donate this, or share, to help provide for a mother and her 2 now fatherless children in Gaza, or anyone else in Gaza who needs help. Like this family with a sick baby. Just do something, especially if you got the day off.
