It all came down to having faith in the rally cap. #boysofsummer #montanamoment #calripkenbaseball #wellthatdidntgoasplanned
Even though the winter runoff happened faster than normal this year - the summer showers are keeping the valley green. No complaints! #montanamoment #bigskyjournal #summer #americana #montana #theoldbarn #rainisagoodthing
Tech scouting today for an upcoming assignment and stumbled upon this.... Just an old fence post. #montanamoment #bozeman #summer #itsthelittlethings
Sounds of Summer - pt. 3 This here is my third and final for the day as I continue with this theme for @wonderfulmachine. It's a no brainer for me as I'm just rolling back in from my son's double header against the team from Dillon, MT. I was working the bbq along our third base line which turned out to be the most appropriate seat for today as I was forced to listen to it all unfold while doing battle with an army of burgers, dogs and brats. The soundtrack of the game varies radically as to where you plant yourself. I've had the pleasure of listening to games unfold from about every perspective... whether it be via coaching in the dugout or calling the game from the booth. And truth be told, I prefer the latter. It's the one seat where you are forced to pay attention to the game in a variety of ways while being able to play a role in how others hear it too. The crack of a bat and the call of a third strike are still within earshot and the various conversations that fill the bleachers are just out of range. It's hard to explain the beauty that is found in the sound of a ballgame. All I know is this - it can be heard from every seat and it makes me happy. This particular image was made with my phone during a recent game that I had the pleasure of announcing. And yes, that's my boy on the mound. Sounds of Summer - part 2
Another one of my favorites goes without saying… and truth be told it’s bigger than the sound of raindrops. It includes the voice of thunder growing in the distance and the whistling of the wind licking the treetops which surround a lake nestled in a basin. The initial drops painting the surface are eerily quiet. This is usually when I find myself lost in thought… imagining each of the circles being formed by a trout sipping the surface during an afternoon hatch. And about the time I’m convinced that this is indeed a feeding frenzy to remember, the reality arrives in full splendor. All senses come to life when the thunder picks up a few decibels and hushed voices are no longer the norm. This very thing happened to me the other day - accompanied by the chorus of my sons and nephews cracking up while gathering their fishing gear and hitting the trail in double time.

Sounds of Summer - part 1
This is what I’m going with today as I continue sharing a bit of my work during this weekend’s takeover for @wonderfulmachine.
One of my favorite sounds happens while walking knee deep in morning grass. It’s more along the lines of a symphony really - accompanied with the voices of red-winged blackbirds, red-breasted robins, a screeching raptor circling above (with a couple of angry crows in tow) and the constant hum from the critters and insects living in the midst of it all. And when you throw the sound of a distant train into the mix… it’s a wonderful way to start a day.

Standing near a passing train always reminds me of a particular place in my childhood. To where I would often run thru the citrus and avocado groves whenever I heard a train in the distance. I’d hightail it thru the shin deep carpet of avocado leaves, catching my breath at the edge of the gravel while keeping my eyes peeled on the nickels that I had placed on the tracks earlier in the day.

I'm told that officially it's a "12 gauge Browning Superposed with double single triggers cir.1929." That's quite a mouthful. That being said, and in knowing how every proper shotgun should have a proper name... I went ahead and named this one "Gorgeous." It wouldn't be the first time I named somebody else's shotgun and I think it'll stick just as the others did. #sweetlips #pops #opportunity #gorgeous
Glenn Frey
I remember when Elvis died. I was just a kid who thought “why in the Sam hell is everybody crying?”
But now I’m older, and someone whose music has been such a huge part of my life has passed away. So now I understand. The Eagles were probably my first favorite group. It was my older brother who introduced them to me back when all I thought about was being a kid and marrying Laurie Zirbel. My brother was one of those classic high school stoner dudes from the 70’s and he turned me on to sooo many wonderful bands. I remember the two of us listening to The Eagles and Jackson Browne too. As I recall, “James Dean” was our favorite song.
Simply put, Glenn Frey was my Paul McCartney.
Anyhow, I’ve been listening to Glenn’s music all day and the song that really takes me to a significant period in my life is the one that I posted here.

It was the song that I always listened to when I was trying to get myself back into shape after going thru some significant health issues.
The lyrics were beyond inspirational for me and I would find myself emotionally overwhelmed more times than not during those wee hours of the night on that son-of-a-bitch elliptical machine that we kept in our old garage.
So thank you Glenn Frey and cheers to those of you who crank the volume tonight.
May he rest in peace.

An image from Thanksgiving weekend - another hidden treasure in our Christmas Tree!
I say “another” because the tree that we chopped down last Christmas had a nest in it too. What’s remarkable about this particular nest/ornament is that it stayed in tact during the ordeal of being chopped down, dragged out of the woods (thanks for your help @jay_lar95) and then roped up and strapped onto the top of our rig - without being damaged! I didn’t even notice it until we got home and set the tree up in our stand. Anyhow… I think you will agree when I say it is an absolutely beautiful Christmas ornament. Merry Christmas! 🎄

Climbing Hungarian Hill. I am probably being a bit pretentious by naming this particular slice of land - but the way I see it, the shoe fits. I've been chasing a healthy population of Huns (Hungarian Partridge) this season and I have come to the realization that they are the most difficult upland bird that I have had the pleasure to hunt. Smaller than chukar - and just as fast. And when they flush, you best be on it my friend or you'll end up chasing them up one side... and then down the other. And with the wind blowing at a steady 25 mph, you will 1) appreciate the healthy dose of oxygen forcing it's way into your lungs and 2) start to wonder if it's possible to lead these birds enough as the entire covey takes to the sky like a squadron of F-15's. The upside in situations like this is in knowing that the birds will be there for you next time. At least in theory. #montana #coveyrise #uplandhunting #missedthatsonofabitch (at Bozeman, Montana)
"A day in the blind is a delightful occasion. If there are ducks to be shot so much the better, but even a day in the open watching the bobbing decoys and the changing weather, with the good companionship of friends, is in itself a more than worth-while experience."

From yesterday's "afternoon and into the night" float with a couple of buddies on the mighty Yellowstone River. It turned out that I chose a 10 mile section that was flowing much slower than I had anticipated. Translation... we ended up taking out waaaay past my bedtime and had to walk alongside the boat during the last mile+ on account of it being pitch black and not wanting to drift by our take out. Because if that was the case... #wewouldhavebeenscrewed #montanamoment #atleastwecaughtfish #ithoughtyoubroughtaheadlamp (at Paradise Valley, Montana)
