My Spine Hurts

I was visiting family in CT and showing my new Omnichord to my brother in May 2022. While showing him each and every feature, I got caught up in a simple two chord progression with the disco drum setting and automatic bass. It sounded like the theme of an imp, a scoundrel, scamp, tickster, rascal, scallywag, which took me right to having a bonfire. What’s more impish than throwing a once important document like a final exam or a bill into a fire? A lot, but that’s maybe the limit most of us get to experience in our civilized lives.

I listened to this piece of a song every day when I first wrote it, trying as hard as I could to finish it, but had to put it down for a while. I hadn’t thought of the moth visual motif of this album at the time yet, but after I did, over a year later, I finally made the connection between it and the flame. Who is more excited about fire than moths? Who gets more excited about natural phenomena than the character of this album? It all came together quite quickly, despite this being my first dance oriented song, something I never thought I would be inclined to do. Moth is all about release, then, even for me; letting go of musical hangups and admitting to making fun pop music, and for the listener, letting go of paper, some sanity, the need to maintain an appearance. All of it goes into the fire.

Spite is one of the strongest artistic generators there is. The bus stop I wait at after work is across the street from frat houses that are always loudly blasting classic rock and middle aged white man songs, which is fine, but there is absolutely no way the boys playing the music thought to like those songs for themselves. It’s giving “these are my dad’s favorite songs and I’ve never had to think for myself”. I wanted to write a mindlessly happy song for a change and thought that the perspective of, like, the worst person ever would be a perfect vehicle to do so. It was a ton of fun to write and came together very quickly, probably because it’s so easy to be awful. Just imagine a Straight Guy in a jacked up truck speeding down the freeway to a job that was chosen for him, or to golf for business purposes, to “invest”, to yell at women, or to bother drag queens. …This one’s for him <3

How I feel asking everyone at work on Microsoft Teams to presave my new song

It’s outttt!!!! I’m so excited to have new music out.

I started writing this song while still living in Brooklyn, and even performed it across NYC, but the structure never felt quite right. Upon moving to Durham, Folk Singer landed on this iteration, which I am soooo excited to share. Its transformation speaks to this album it will soon be a part of, called Dooda :) , that’s largely about plunking silly little urbanist capitalist thoughts into a gorgeous gurgling creek in your rural backyard. I did literally just move from a big city to a small city, but it really felt like I was moving to a thicket in the woods!! Easier access to autumnal walks in the woods birthed the warm trip hop and lo fi inspired sound Folk Singer now has, which inspires and permeates the rest of the record. Please enjoy this overcast loud meditation on the dangers of being too online!!1!
