Devil’s Dance Floor - Flogging Molly
“It’s fine, sweetpea, just a tiny inconvenience in their day that they will forget about before closing. You’ve already apologised enough.” she reassured him once more as she watched him inspect the situation knowing full well her was resisting the urge of getting up and cleaning up the mess himself as he watched the young man mop.Â
“Oh come on there really is no need to thank me. You looked so panicked, I couldn’t just not help you. How about a compromise? We go to brunch, that way it is both breakfast and lunch, and I pay for myself but get to enjoy your company?” she asked another smile forming on her face as she watched the young man think. His mind seemed to be whirling every second that she was with him. “I mean you always hear that lawyers are liars and cheaters and getting criminals out of jail, and we get that rep because we have a few rich snobs getting their way. But most of us just want to make the legal system work properly. It kinda sucks.” Â
Breathing in deep, Winter bit on his bottom lip and gave yet another nod. "Yeah, guess so," he replied, still not quite shaking off the guilt. Even if it was the tiniest inconvenience, he still felt bad.
Told he had no need to thank her, the male shook his head in disagreement. "There really is a need to thank you. You could have just sat back and watched me flail," he stated before shaking his head once more. "Brunch sounds perfect, but I insist on paying. It's the least I can do and you already paid for my coffee so allow me to at least pay for brunch." He wasn't about to take no for an answer. He owed her and he was going to pay even if he had to tackle the check the moment it hit the table. It was the very least he could do to thank her. Listening as she spoke of how the world usually viewed lawyers, Winter couldn't help but frown a little. "I guess that's true," he began, thinking a moment before he continued. "But you don't seem that way to me. You seem like a good person. Someone who only wants to help and that’s admirable."
Okay, so perhaps pulling an all-nighter and then drinking what felt like an absolute gallon of coffee wasn’t the brightest of ideas, but something had to give. After all, there were only so many hours in one single day and Tilly had been absolutely desperate to finish a painting she’d been working on for a while now. Her desire to create original work ebbed and flowed - sometimes the idea of staying indoors and painting after spending hours restoring an old masterpiece seemed very unappealing. Other times her creativity had no limits, meaning she would do almost anything to make sure she had the time needed to explore new ideas. Sometimes, unfortunately, this meant she would gladly disregard sleep and even leaving her apartment for a few days.Â
The coffee did help to a certain extent. She’d felt absolutely exhausted and disconnected before that first, crucial cup, but could now actually form fairly sensible sentences and pay attention to whatever was going on around her. That was why Tilly managed to notice the young man struggling with what looked like a very nasty case of a spilled drink. She nearly jumped up and hurried over with a few additional napkins, placing them over the spreading pool of coffee. “Are you alright? You didn’t burn yourself or anything?” she asked with a hurried smile.Â
Of all the ways this day could have gone, Winter had hoped with everything in him that this wasn't it. Spilling his coffee at such an ungodly hour made him rethink his decision to get out of bed all together. Perhaps he should have stayed in his pjs safe and comfy, and most importantly, not being personally assaulted by his morning coffee. My god, it was hot.
Trying his best to stop any spread all while cleaning up the spilled coffee, Winter didn't notice someone walk over until they spoke, scaring him half to death. "Huh?," he asked, turning his head to look at the woman as her words slowly sank in. "Oh, no. I'm fine." That was a lie but he wasn't about to admit to it. "Thank you for the extra napkins."
“Listen, if I give you ten bucks, would you pretend to be my partner or something?” he asked. He never was well-versed in the art of subtlety, and this was the best that he could do. “That guy over there’s been giving me weird looks for the past half hour and it’s creeping me out.” He gestured discreetly to the man nearby, his untrimmed beard splashed with his drink. “Normally, I don’t mind being checked out, but we can both agree that I’m pretty much out of his league, right?”
Drink in hand, Winter hadn't even gotten the straw into his mouth before freezing as someone spoke to him. Turning his head, his eyes widened slightly at the unusual request. Already a few drinks in he pinched the straw of his drink with great care and brought it to his lips before he glanced at the the unnamed creepy man with the subtly of a shotgun. Turning his attention back to the rather attractive gentleman standing beside him, Winter frowned a little. "That's not very nice.. ," he mumbled, taking another sip. "He's not your type, but he's got feelings too, you know." That man could have lots of feelings and maybe that was why his drink splashed beard was so large. It was full of feelings. Okay, perhaps this drink should be Winter's last of the night.

Zenina furrowed her brows at his concern. It was odd to her that he was this insistent on cleaning up the mess. Touching his hand lightly in reassurance she spoke once more. “Hey. Come on, why are you so worried about it? It’s nothing. It’ll take them like 5 minutes max. In fact look he’s on it right now.” Zenina pointed at the young man who was quickly mopping up the mess, with a few more mops and quick smile to Zenina he was back behind the bar and the place was clean just like before. The only clue of the incident being the wet floor sign left behind. “See it’s all okay.”
“Caffeine and hydration are good. It’s all good. Now enjoy. And really there is no need to thank me. I just like to help.” Zenina said a smile forming on her face as she watched Winter examine the cup. “Yup, that’s why I became a lawyer, it’s my passion and I love it, but I guess that doesn’t usually give me the best rep which is not always fun.”
Asked why he was so worried about it, Winter gave a small shrug in reply. "I don't know. I just feel bad because I know they work hard enough as it is and I doubt they appreciate me making such a mess. Especially so early in the morning, you know?" As he spoke, Winter looked over at the young man mopping up the mess and fought the urge to apologize to him realizing his concern over this whole mess was probably leaning a little on the weird side. It wasn't often someone worried so deeply about a stranger cleaning up their mess. "I guess so.." Eyes lingering on a the wet floor sign a moment longer, Winter turned to give the girl a small smile, all while making a mental note to leave the guy a nice tip.
"That's true.. I do need to thank you though. You didn't have to help me clean and you really didn't have to buy me another coffee. I should make it up to you. Buy you lunch or breakfast or something," Winter offered all while wondering if he should buy her both. Breakfast for helping him clean the table and himself and lunch for the coffee. Looking at his cup, Winter played with it a little before returning his gaze to his companion as she spoke of the reasons behind her career path. "Why not the best rep?, " he asked, curiosity getting the best of him. He wasn't completely unaware of the bad rap that most lawyers got, but he preferred to try and see the best in people. She wanted to help people and that was an admirable goal.
Zenina shook her head trying her best to stifle another laugh. He seemed so genuinely upset for his little mess it was endearing. “I’m almost positive they wouldn’t allow it considering they won’t even let me. But seriously, Winter, don’t worry about it so much. It’ll be fine.” Zenina smiled. “Besides someone was going to have to mop this floor eventually.” She was intrigued by the guy before her, she didn’t know why but there was something about him that made her want to know more about him.
Zenina shook her head. She had always been annoyingly stubborn even in her niceness, so when she offered to get Winter a coffee it was more of a statement than an offer “You can have water and coffee, it’ll be fine.” she smiled walking to the counter and trading in the rag and a couple dollars for a coffee before coming back to her seat and handing him the drink. “You can sit with me on the condition that you have this coffee as a gesture of welcoming you to my little corner.” Zenina giggled carefully placing a lid on the to go cup to make sure it wouldn’t spill. “I don’t mind at all. I’m a laywer, not as cool as illustration but I love it.” Zenina smiled taking her seat once more. She knew her job was a bore to most people but she enjoyed it because it meant that she had a chance to help people. Â
To say the least, Winter was not satisfied with this conclusion. Surely they would let him clean it. Maybe if he paid them to let him. He just felt bad. Even growing up, he trailed behind the help his parents hired insisting that they could sit and relax and let him sweep or mop  or whatever it was they were doing at the moment while they rested their aching feet. Especially when the mess they were cleaning was his. "I'm sure I could persuade them," he stated with a quick nod of his head as if agreeing with himself. Letting out a small sigh, Winter frowned. "I know, but that's usually done at closing...I'm pretty sure they would let me." The last statement was muttered to himself as he gave a weary look to the puddle on the floor.
Told he could have both water and coffee, the male bit his bottom lip. "That's a lot of liquid for one person.." he stated, trailing off as he realized that this wasn't up for debate. He was getting a cup of coffee whether he liked it or not. He only hoped that this one made it to his mouth. If he ruined two tables in a row he would have to ban himself from the shop himself for the safety of the general public. Faced with an ultimatum of sorts, Winter thought for a moment before nodding his head. "Okay. Thank you and thank you for helping me clean the table. I appreciate it," he stated, more thankful than he could express. Aside from work deadlines, the man did not work well under pressure and seeing all that coffee flowing this way and out...well, it was about as stressful as performing open heart surgery in his eyes. Too much pressure, too fast paced and just so damn sticky. Taking a seat across from her, Winter's eyes widened a little in amazement. "Really?," he asked with a small smile. "I think it's pretty cool. You help people for a living and that's pretty awesome."
Zenina smiled laughing lightly. “That definitely would have been a lot worse. Moving away from the spill would be a good idea though. Someone’s going to come mop this place up soon, but until then we should make sure no one has a chance to sue this place for negligence.” She spoke, not noticing her lawyer mind working its way into her actions, while gesturing Winter to move towards her own table where her coffee and book were waiting for her as she went to place a caution sign next to the still wet floor.Â
“She’s a sweetheart though, she wouldn’t mind. If it makes you feel better I could just buy you another cup, what were you drinking?” Zenina asked watching as his eyes grow wide at the the sight of the sketchbook in her hands, she made sure not to steal any more glances no matter how curious she was to see more of his drawings. Taking the rag from his hands, she smiled exchanging the book with a tiny bit of reluctance. “Oh that’s really cool. I bet that’s a lot of fun” Zenina says genuinely interested. “I’m Zenina I’m not at all talented like that and don’t do anything nearly as cool.” she jokes putting out her hand to shake. “It’s nice to meet you though I’m sure it could have been under a less hectic circumstance. You can sit here if you like it doesn’t look like there’s room anywhere else. I’m just going to give this cloth back, are you sure you don’t want any more coffee?”
The thought of leaving the little shop in a neck brace was a little more than Winter could handle at the moment. Those things were never fun. Still, he smiled a little and gave a small nod of his head as he stepped away from the mess he had made, feeling horrible now for the poor person who had to clean it up. "Think they would let me clean it for them?, " he asked without thinking. He didn't want someone going through so much trouble for him and knew they probably wouldn't like him all that much for making them work harder so early in the morning. However, her wording had his brows raising ever so slightly. 'Lawyer talk,' he thought to himself wondering if that was what she did for a living. Already his mind was coming up with a story for the stranger before him. It was a terrible habit of his, making stories for people who already had them. Though, it wasn't necessarily about her. More like the idea of her, changed and tweaked to fit a children's story. Winter sadly had an overactive imagination which was one of the reasons he had chosen his current profession.
Listening to the woman, Winter gave another small nod before shaking his head. "Oh, no no. I can't ask you to do that. You already have done so much.I have water in my bag anyway. I should drink more water," he stated quickly, not wanting her to go through any more trouble for him. She was already so nice helping him with the mess. Taking is sketchbook, he held it close to his chest and shrugged his shoulders. "It can be. Deadlines not so much, but it's nice being able to do something I love and kinda cool to see my work in stores for kids to enjoy," he admitted with a small smile. His favorite part was seeing kids looking through the books and commenting on all the things going on in the pictures. That made the long caffeine fueled nights worth it. Smiling brightening, Winter shook Zenina's hand. "It's nice to meet you. I'm sure that's not true. Do you mind if I ask what you do? Is that a rude question? I'm never sure. I just think it's interesting to hear what people do.." The male rambled on for a moment before remembering to stop himself. Glancing around, Winter noticed just how truly crowded it had gotten in the place. Every seat aside from his former one and her table had been taken up. "Uh, sure. If you don't mind me sitting with you," he replied picking up his messenger bag that had thankfully been spared from the disaster that was his morning coffee. "Alright. I'm sure. I have water."
Fall Into These Arms - New Politics
Zenina giggled as she watched the awkward young man fumble to catch the rag. “Don’t worry we all have our off-days, it could have been worse.” she reassured him He seemed confused and a little frazzled by the whole situation, and Zenina debated with herself about whether or not he still needed her help or if she could go back to her seat and continue reading. Zenina smiled shrugging her shoulders “Suit yourself, I myself would never turn down free coffee but to each their own. She was just about to walk to her seat when she noticed his sketchbook placed on the empty table next to the disaster zone. Grabbing the sketchbook, Zenina held it out for him noticing the barely started sketch that were now only light splattered with drops of coffee. “I’ll switch ya. I’m sure the dirty rag is not as useful as this sketchbook. So you’re an artist?” she asks a friendly smile on her face.
Reaching up to push some stray curls from his line of sight, Winter bit his bottom lip. This wasn't an off day. This was every day for him. Sadly he never outgrew the clumsy stage, constantly knocking things over and tripping his way through life, but he wasn't about to admit to that. He wanted to hold what little cool this incident didn't rob him of. "Yeah, I guess it could have been worse. Coulda slipped on the coffee too." Images of him slipping on the spill and having to be carried out on a stretcher with one of those horrible neck braces flashed through his mind and had him glancing down to make certain he was not about to make it a reality.
Finishing up with the rag, the young man gave a small nod of his head. "Yeah, but it wasn't like it was her fault that I can't keep liquid in my cup." He didn't want anyone losing money because he forgot to look up while reaching. Winter held the rag close as he watched the woman begin to move to leave only to stop when her eyes landed on his sketchbook. Holding his breath for a moment, he pressed his lips together a little worried she were about to peek inside. The almost finished sketchbook was a pretty private thing for him; full of illustrations for both work and fun, it was something he normally kept close to avoid curious eyes. Giving a small grateful smile, Winter held out the rag to exchange, frowning slightly at the ruined page. Darn. He liked where the drawing was going. "Huh? Oh, yeah. I guess you can call me an artist. I'm an illustrator actually. I illustrate children's books mostly. I'm Winter by the way."

“Are you just gonna stare at my ass all night or are you going to at least buy me a drink?”
“Sorry. I didn’t mean to stare. I just... I was trying to figure out what is on your pants. I think you sat in gum. Wintergreen maybe."
Zenina sat quietly in her corner of the coffee shop, half reading and half people watching as she drank her coffee peacefully. She was a creature of habit and every Saturday Zenina would come to this coffee shop and watch strangers start their days…or in some cases end their nights. It was fun for her watching the still a little drunk couple stumble passed the business man in a suit ready for his no nonsense day. Giggling to herself as the couple head to the front of the store, Zenina’s eyes land on the man with the sketchbook. She had seen him a few times in the coffee shop, often looking around frantically for what she assumed was a muse. Following his eyes to the blonde woman, Zenina laughed he always seemed to find the quirkiest people within the crowd.Â
Smiling to herself she looked down at her book continuing to read the Faulkner’s story of a family’s trip to bury their mother in the city. She loved this book like she loved people watching each character written in voices that distinguished them from the rest. Each character adding a piece to the larger narrative as they told their own stories. An artistic combination of a single character’s death moulding a family together while tearing them apart. She was so entranced by Faulkner’s writing the next time she looked up the young man was cursing under his breath and using a mound of now damp napkins to clean the mess. Getting up, Zenina finds Mary, the owner of the little coffee shop and a friend of hers. Seeing as she was busy Zenina asks her for a cloth to wipe up the mess of the silly man. Grabbing the damp napkins out of his hands she dumps them into the trashcan. She then proceeds to pick up the no empty cup and wipe clean the table and the seat. “You need to be more careful. Mary can get you a refill, just give her a bit she’s a little busy with inventory right now. Here,” Zenina throws the cloth at the young man, “wipe yourself off. I love the smell of coffee but it’s no fun when it’s on your clothes.”
Panic quickly settled over the young man as he watched his perfectly sugared coffee spread across the once clean table top. His face heated up in embarrassment as he dropped wads of napkins that just wasn't absorbent enough to take this on. This was not how he pictured his lazy Saturday going. "Oh gosh," he whispered at the mess as if the panic in his tone would halt the hasty spread of bean juice. He had only gotten one sip. This was what he got for waking up so early.
Distracted by the mess before him, Winter failed to notice that he was no longer alone. Breath catching in his throat, he quickly turned to see the woman who had taken his napkins right from his fumbling hands. "Oh," was all that he could manage to say as she wiped the table with a rag. Yes, a rag worked much better than a wad of useless napkins. Did she travel with that rag? Maybe she owned the place. No, she didn't look like she worked here. Winter opened his mouth to apologize before shutting it again to allow her to speak. "I'm normally more careful with my hot beverages," he insisted before shaking his head. "No, no. I think I've had enough caffeine and excitement for this morning." Maybe he should have stayed in bed a little longer. Barely catching the cloth rag, Winter offered a small smile in gratitude and began to try to pat dry his poor jeans. He had just washed these too. "Thank you," he replied before breathing out a soft embarrassed laugh. The day had just begun and here he was soaked in coffee. At least his sketchbook was safe.
Sitting in the small coffee shop, Winter tapped the end of his pencil on the open sketchbook laid out before him. In need of inspiration, he took to one of his favorite places in the city to people watch. He watched an elderly man with a large crooked nose fight with what seemed to be a plastic wrapped biscotti -probably brought from home. Looking over he noticed a pretty blonde with large sunhat adorned with little ruby red flowers. Tilting his head a little, the male watched as she sipped her drink before the corners of her mouth gently curved skyward in enjoyment. Looking down at his sheet of paper, the male began to sketch as quickly as he could. He glanced from his subject to the page, trying to capture whatever it was that drew him to her. Perhaps it was the curve of her lips or the way her delicate fingers gripped the cup, or maybe even just that ridiculously over the top hat. Whatever it was, he needed to capture it, but alas his hand wasn't quick enough.
Before long, she stood and took her beverage and over the top hat right out the door and into the sea of busy people just outside the shop. "Well, fuck," Winter whispered to himself with a small sigh as he leaned back a little in his seat. Shaking his head a little, the male looked at his sparkless drawing while reaching for his drink only to knock it over, spilling coffee everywhere. "Noooooo," he whispered panicking instantly. Picking up his sketchbook, the young man moved it to higher ground before grabbing a stack of napkins he had snagged in case his clumsy ass needed it. "Shit, shit, shit-hot, hot, hot."
