In watching the Hadestown proshot, I realized that the stage itself doesn’t start moving until Hades arrives to bring Persephone back to the Underworld, as if he himself is setting the actual theatrical machinery in motion. The impact is driven home at the end of Way Down Hadestown by the cast all staring at where the lift descended.

From then on, the stage usually moves in ways that oppose the cast- whether it’s keeping Eurydice away from Orpheus (and allowing the Fates to take her belongings), rotating to represent the endless cycle the Workers are trapped in, taking Eurydice to the Underworld, and spinning as Orpheus makes his way into and out of Hadestown.

The one time Hades is visibly caught off guard by the rotation of the stage is during Epic III when Orpheus finally completes his song and the whole of the Underworld is echoing it since he isn’t in control of it; presumably, he would have had a similar reaction during Wait For Me when Orpheus breaks up the stage with his music, though Hades is not on stage for this part.

But it’s at the end when spring has finally come again (showing that Persephone has now come on time) that the lift is used to bring the tables and chairs back on stage, as though Hades is using what he’s built to do his part to bring about the seasons.

like the point is eurydice signs the contract so that she can survive. she's hungry and cold. and hades promises food, shelter, safety, even comfort. but she still doesn't get what she's after because it kills her. we submit to the capitalism machine because we need food, we need somewhere to lay our head in order to be people, but it strips away our personhood anyway.

it’s funny how we’re getting to the point in the AI lifespan where you can feel the desperation from tech companies to have you use their AI features. instagram has moved their AI effects to the top of the menu when you’re creating a post for your story, exactly where the draw/edit button used to be. gmail is creating one-click AI-generated replies right before you open up the text box. spotify put a beta AI playlist generator on the front page that looks just like a search bar so all of their users accidentally click on it when they go to search for a song.

tech companies are shaking in their boots trying to prove to shareholders that their investment in AI is worth it, to the point where they’re tricking their users into using the AI features even for a split second in order to fudge the numbers. like awww is your little environment-destroying toy not wielding the results you hoped for? so sad!
