theo had been listening to the same song on repeat as he sits on the mat that he’s put out under the shade of a large tree , he’s busy sketching the person that’s seated in front of him , putting in all the attention to detail . he can’t help but sketch them , they’ve got amazing features and it would be a sin not to admire them . “ i’m almost done … so , what do you think ? ”

“  green  too  .  i’d  have  assumed  with  how  you  mad  you  are  over  christmas  ,  you’d  have  already  picked  out  a  colour  scheme  for  next  year  ,  ”  he  can  still  remember  the  green  and  silver  colour  scheme  they’d  last  opted  for  and  attempting  to  wrap  tinsel  around  the  tree  .  a  memory  he  can’t  seem  to  shake  no  matter  how  hard  he  tries  .  “  have  you  asked  anyone  ?  ”  it  was  still  easy  enough  to  read  between  the  lines  where  hyun  was  concerned  and  it  was  a  fair  assumption  to  make  that  he  hadn’t  even  found  the  time  to  ask  around  yet  .  “  i’ll  write  the  names  down  for  next  year  so  i  don’t  forget  again  ,  ”  he  hadn’t  realised  how  much  he’d  relied  on  hyun  for  the  finer  details  until  he’d  left  .  the  little  reminders  he’d  leave  for  him  or  even  upcoming  birthdays  and  appointments  on  their  calendars  —  there  one  day  and  gone  the  next  .  ren’d  be  lying  if  he  said  he  wasn’t  a  tiny  bit  relieved  that  hyun  could  spare  some  time  to  help  him  pick  some  things  out  and  that  he  wanted  to  see  the  bunnies  .  god  knows  they’d  missed  him  like  mad  ,  he  can’t  even  begin  to  imagine  how  crazy  they’d  go  once  they  were  in  his  arms  and  sense  his  familiarity  .  “  they’re  back  at  the  bed  and  breakfast  ,  maybe  after  this  you  can  come  see  them  and  i’ll  decorate  the  place  a  little  while  you  play  with  them  .  and  i  think  they’d  appreciate  new  toys  ,  they  seem  to  keep  nibbling  on  all  their  old  ones  .  ”

               it’s   the   new   year   already   but   iseul   still   feels   like   he’s   living   in   2022   but   it’s   clear   as   day   that   there’s   still   some   unresolved   issues   between   him   and   iggy   .    for   the   hundredth   time    ,    he   stands   outside   of   her   apartment    ,    ready   to   settle   something   he   has   no   idea   of   whether   it’ll   go   well   or   not   .    still    ,    he   takes   his   chance   .    what’s   new   anyway    ?    perhaps   they’ll   be   doing   this   for   another   year   .    hopefully   not   because   he   really   wants   changes   and   improvements   in   this   relationship    …    if   there’s   still   one   .    when   she   swings   the   door   open    ,    he   doesn’t   beat   around   the   bush   .      “    hey    ,    can   we    …    talk    ?    ”

       “   god  made  a  mistake  giving  me  such  a  cute  face ,   how  can  i  use  it  for  good  when  i  know  i  can  get  away  with  so  much .   i  mean  look  at  me   …   who’s  gonna  suspect  me  ever ?    ”

“ of course, i wouldn’t miss it for the world. ” cassius is a huge fan of the band and to hear shiloh play a song by them ? he’s going to have a blast. “ are you performing any songs that you’ve written ? i’m sure you’ve been working so hard on them. ”

“  fingers  crossed  ,  if  not  ,  the  blue  is  still  a  good  option  ,  ”  he  hated  every  second  of  whatever  this  was  —  having  to  make  small  talk  instead  of  asking  the  questions  he  longed  to  get  answers  to  .  it  wasn’t  them  ,  even  long  before  they  got  together  ,  their  conversations  had  never  been  this  awkward  .  he’d  never  felt  so  suffocated  despite  being  the  one  who’d  initiated  conversation  .  “  does  no  one  else  round  here  play  soccer  ?  you  could  form  your  own  little  thing  to  play  ,  ”  ren  can  easily  recall  countless  times  he’d  watched  hyun  out  on  that  pitch  and  how  it’d  become  a  regular  occassion  for  the  pair  .  something  he  didn’t  know  he’d  ever  miss  until  now  .  “  they  were  our  first  two  ,  right  ?  so  you’re  probably  right  ,  i  have  bunny  birthday  on  my  calendar  but  no  names  .  ”  it’s  hard  not  to  notice  the  way  his  features  soften  at  the  mention  of  the  bunnies  ,  enough  of  a  change  for  ren  to  consider  asking  if  he  wanted  to  see  them  .  “  sure  ,  if  you’re  not  busy  ,  ”  he  nods  ,  extending  out  his  basket  for  hyun  to  see  what  he’d  already  gathered  .  “  uh—  if  you  want  ,  you  can  say  hello  ..  whenever  .  pretty  sure  they  still  miss  you  and  that  they’d  go  wild  once  they  realise  it’s  you  but  totally  up  to  you  —  no  pressure  .  ”

                     ren  longs  to  reach  out  and  hug  him  but  he  knows  it’s  not  his  place  anymore  .  it  wasn’t  his  place  to  do  anything  at  this  point  —  he’d  decided  that  when  he  chose  to  watch  him  leave  .  and  as  much  as  it  hurt  then  and  even  now  ,  he  stands  by  the  decision  ,  distance  was  what  was  best  for  both  of  them  .  “  fair  enough  ,  then  maybe  red  —  you  know  for  the  christmas  vibes  .  ”  he  suggests  with  an  easy  shrug  ,  “  it’s  nice  ,  quiet  ,  not  anything  like  home  .  i  can  see  why  you’d  like  it  ,  ”  it  was  peaceful  ,  probably  the  kind  of  place  many  people  visited  to  escape  the  city  or  to  simply  think  .  “  how’s  it  going  ?  ”  though  they  might  not  have  been  in  the  same  relationship  as  before  ,  ren  was  still  curious  about  his  life  ,  wanted  to  know  that  he’d  settled  in  well  and  that  university  was  everything  he  wanted  it  to  be  .  the  straight  up  questions  never  leave  his  mouth  however  and  it’s  a  lingering  thought  at  the  back  of  his  mind  .  “  i’m  okay  ,  they’re  fine  too  ,  still  adjusting  to  the  confines  of  my  room  .  i  was  uh—  buying  some  stuff  to  spruce  up  the  room  .  i  think  one  has  a  birthday  coming  up  ,  i  can’t  remember  which  one  …  but  i  thought  i’d  get  them  something  colourful  to  look  at  and  not  eat  .  ”

“ i think you’re the only one that thought off ass cheeks , hyun. ” howon chuckles as he shakes his head. “ i think it’s a fun idea. might scare off a potential boyfriend at the club later but eh , a little fun won’t hurt , no ?? ”

                     at  least  hyun  still  remembered  his  name  ,  that  was  something  at  least  .  though  he  supposes  it  hadn’t  been  that  long  technically  since  they  parted  ways  but  it’d  felt  like  a  decade  ago  .  dropping  his  hand  ,  he  slides  it  into  the  pocket  of  his  hood  ,  rocking  back  and  forth  on  the  heels  of  his  feet  .  “  window  shopping  for  ribbons  ?  you  know  christmas  is  over  now  ,  right  ?  ”  he  jokes  or  at  least  tries  to  —  doing  even  that  felt  strange  after  all  this  time  despite  the  number  of  jokes  the  pair  had  shared  in  the  past  .  “  right  —  my  car  broke  down  ,  you  know  me  ,  i  don’t  get  anything  fixed  until  i’m  desperate  .  i  figured  i’d  hang  around  for  a  while  ,  spends  some  time  by  the  beach  .  i  have  a  room  at  the  bed  and  breakfast  ,  ”  ren  explains  ,  “  don’t  worry  ,  it’s  not  a  permanent  stay  ,  ”  he’d  almost  forgotten  hyun  was  even  in  this  town  until  he’d  heard  his  name  in  passing  only  days  earlier  but  the  thought  of  dropping  him  a  text  was  a  daunting  one  and  one  he  couldn’t  bring  himself  to  fulfil  .  “  ..  how’ve  you  been  ?  ”

         𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐝  𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐬  𝐞𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐲  𝐠𝐮𝐢𝐝𝐞  𝐩𝐞𝐧  𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫  𝐩𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐫 ,  swirls  forming  words  that  quickly  begin  to  cover  the  blank  page .  it  was  one  of  angela’s  new  year  resolutions  to  start  writing  again ,  to  become  more  prolific  &  finally  put  together  a  collection  she  was  satisfied  with .   one  that  she  would  be  happy  to  share  with  the  world .  a  sigh  of  relief  escapes  her  as  the  girl  finishes  the  last  word  of  the  final  stanza ,  finding  that  she  can  finally  breathe  again .  it  is  only  then  that  she  notices  someone  standing  nearby ,  and  a  faint  shade  of  pink  instantly  coats  her  cheeks .  it  was  rather  embarrassing  to  be  caught  writing  like  a  maniac .   ❛  oh ,  hello .  sorry ,  i  was  just– …  it’s  nothing .  lovely  day ,  isn’t  it ?  ❜
