Happy Valentines ❤ So instagram freaked out and didnt post the previous attempt. And I lost all the typing I did. So here goes again: Spoilers for Steven Universe below I really like Pink Diamond from Steven Universe's design. Since she is actually Rose Quartz, and I wanted to do something with Pink Diamond in it, I thought it would be neat to redo Rose's portrait again. This is technically a #drawthisagain challenge. I had originally done the picture on the right when we learned that Rose had "shattered" Pink Diamond. So I wanted to remake her portrait from Steven's house as a slightly darker version. This time with new revelations, I redid it far more than the original. In the background, theres the circle from Pink's mural and the lattice from her palanquin. She also has some stars littered around from her Rose Quartz design. I just had lots of fun figuring this out. ********** Spoilers over I also really enjoyed painting an unnatural skin tone, it allows for neat exploration. I also gave her semi freckles cause I thought it was cute. Since she has pink skin, the shading is so fun to experiment with. I also enjoy adding things to backdrop of the painting. I even made the pearl bows myself from ribbon and beads. I love palettes, such pretty collections of color Just finished a comission, and noticed Im running low on yellows. Luckily Im going home soon and can replace lemon yellow with the tube I have. Cadmium yellow hue, however, shall be replaced with a new gamboge from daniel smith. In the shadows of the moon, you can see rabbits. According to legend, rabbits live on the moon. When I was young I've heard that there was a man on the moon, or the moon was made out of cheese. These are the more American tales of what exists up there. I also heard about the rabbits who live on the moon and Chang'e from reading East Asian myths due to curiosity about my heritage. So I wanted to pay homage to those myths with this prompt. I was also inspired by the Mid Autumn Festival which was around the time I painted this This was what I came up with for the prompt of shadow. This is the second to last picture I have left over from this year's "failed" inktober. The next one isn't even finished as I continue to struggle with deciding color composition. (and so much homework at the current time) I use air quotes with failed because, despite not finishing, I still improved in my art. Before this inktober, I was getting back into the habit of not making any completed pieces. I was mostly sketching and doing studies (which was helpful for filling up a sketchbook). And while I value those things and continue to do them, I also find it important to actually make a finish composition. Recently, I also do a lot of sketching, but this time it's because I am trying to iterate more on ideas to get a more solid base. I am also working on pieces that will be finished. I finished the sketchbook 🎉🎊 The first picture is of my new sketchbook Im working on that Ive decorated with stickers from @stickiiclub I actually used this sketchbook previously in the fall 2016 for an art class, but abandoned it for a bit. (Minus a day or 2 in August 2018) A similar situation happened with the sketchbook I just finished (the second photo). I started it in beginning of high school probably 2012 or 2013. But never dated those, picked it up again for a little in 2016 and 2017. But still didnt use much during those times. Half of the sketchbook is literally from 2018 and a quarter is from August 22 to November 7 2018. So this sketchbook has been in and out of my life for 5 or 6 years. I also included the sketch where I restarted in this time in Novemeber. Its definitely a concept Im currently working on, so in the future can see final work I tend to abandon sketchbooks halfway through, but I want to use everything as its a waste to not. So I will go back to old sketchbooks and finish them up. I even marked the number of pages in all of my sketchbooks and paper pads to motivate me to keep going. All the art things I brought to Berlin vs what I ended up using. I always overpack, but thats ok Things I forgot to put in 1st picture: paint rags and stamp pad Pictures: tree that was next to Olympic station in 1936, the Berlin Haubahnhof (Central station), and a dinner that we had as a class Im still learning what I need to travel with, but I definitely love the tiny watercolor set from @cassart1984 , it is literally shorter than a sharpie and just a smidge thicker than one Everything that I actually brought along with me fit in a fanny pack to carry around with ease Of note: the shiseido is just for water, I try to use old containers when I can because it seems a bit wasteful to throw them out if they can be used. Prompts: Fallen and Red Im so close to finishing another sketchbook! This also happened last inktober lol So this has both yesterday and the day before's prompts. I wanted to draw a wet leaf and thought why not make it cohesive with the other prompt. I thought it would be super neat to have a greyscale image with a pop of red. Prompt: Rain I really like how happy she looks, but rain is such a pain to draw lol. I now understand why people usually don't draw people in the rain. I rather like how it turned out. I had fun figuring out the pose cause I got to spin around to figure out how bodies work when on one leg. So, today's is inspired a by Singing in the Rain. All of my initial ideas were rather depressing, but then a fallen umbrella turned into dancing in the rain. Tom Holland's lip sync reminded me that Singing in the Rain had a happy rain scene, so yay. I really wanted to make a happy rain scene. Materials: - only copic multiliners (so it took so long, the rain alone took 2 hours lol. Day 2: Moon (but 1st drawing) The idea behind this piece is a meeting of the past and the future. An Greek goddess meets an astronaut and she's hostile at first. Which is much like how people are resistant to change. And since no one can return to the past we can only move forward and accept what is different. And yet, things stay the same and cycle through. Iteration after iteration of change shows patterns. But it is never quite the same, and each moment that is lost can never be regained. One of the things that seems to stay is nature, such as the moon and trees. But even they bring change with the waning and waxing of the moon, the cycle of the tide, and the endless cycle of death and renewal of the trees and organic matter. The end result something that is similar, but not exactly thr same. This day's piece was inspired by @kdandj3_paintmaker who is the maker of @stoneworks_mill paints. I havent played with the paints I bought all too much (since I was trying to use up some other paints); however, I do quite enjoy them. I love the texture they bring to a painting. Materials: I used her @stoneworks_mill Artemis and Ursa along with Moonglow from @danielsmithartistsmaterials and a touch of Indanthrone Blue from @qorwatercolors . I wanted to use only moon related colors (in name), but used the others to add more depth and variance. Also used copic multiliners, noodlers ink, and davinci paint brushes. Painting in monochrome is so fun. I remember I used to do this kind of style a lot with women. For this process I started with a basic sketch of what I wanted, then I took a picture of that sketch and tried out colors using procreate on my iPad. I knew which colors I wanted to use, but wasnt sure which side would be which color. I also used the iPad coloring in order to figure out the features of each man. Because I wasnt using any reference photos, I tried to make a reasonable amount of shading so it doesnt look too weird. Then I used the digital reference when painting it in person. It turned out a little diffrerent from the digital picture, but I cant really undo things with watercolor. I personally really like the way the purple man turned out because its so different from what I usually do. Like his features are different, so it's like "yay Im not drawing the same things again and again" The concept of this picture is to show the differences that people can be like depending on their outlook on the world. It kind of reminds me of the happy and sad face of the typical drama symbol. I chose tese two colors because I haven't used much of them and they go well together. There were other colors, but I think this combo was best. Stray cats are both cute and kinda sad. Especially if they used to be pets. I often saw these two by the apartment I stayed last summer. I was told by taxi driver that the reason there are so many cats in the area becuase the neighborhood mostly had older people with cats. On a more positive note: I really like playing with sharp lines and breaking the boxes. I find it really fun to create sharp boxes and then have objects break that box I realized something about the paints Im trying to use up, they are more similar to gouache than my other paints. Maybe I never tried my other paints that way, but that would explain why these are more opaque. I will definitely try out my other paints to see if its just these. They are also a bit less glossy looking when they are dry in the palette compared to my other paints. I am learning so much about these paints by using them all the time. Watch out for that tree! Even though I havent seen George of the Jungle (tv show) in so long, the theme song haunts me to this day. This turned out really different from the initial concept, initially I was going to do a jungle scene, but I am kind of burning out by super challenging myself constantly. I still will, but sometimes something easy and fun to restore spirits is good. I tend to like painting womens faces cause they are so pretty. The more I use the paint Im trying to use up, the more I long for my other watercolors. This paint works well when used in lots of thin layers, but sometimes I like using thicker amounts of paint. Usually with my other paints this is fine, but this one shows the brush stroked and dries more dull and unevenly. Maybe its user error? But I usually dont get this with other paints. I will continue to use it, after it did cost money (although it was only $2 USD when I got it in China) and it would be a waste to be thrown out. I love cities cause I always find the buildings so interesting. I tend to prefer the crowded building look over the spaced out houses. However, I tend to dislike paint and drawing such scenes because of all the little details. I definitely plan to practice this as I like the look and have many photos. This is based off a picture I took while in Brooklyn in March. I really liked that area. Maybe one day I can move to big city. But I also like nature, so I dont know what to do. Maybe take drives out? I think the hardest part of posting art online is editing the photos to make it match real life. Cameras dont always make it super accurate due to bad lighting. I usually up the exposure and whites to make it more daytime like. I sometimes also change temp and other things to get as accurate as possible. Sometimes even scanning art work doesnt make it accurate to what the eye sees. In this work, theres more blue in the windows that the camera didnt quite capture and editing didnt bring out.
