She finds him in the morning, sleep still tugging a bit at her eyes. The first time she ventured out of her rooms, she forgot his gift even. Still, she offers him a smile, "Good morningā and happy birthday." Sakura hands over a box, within it a sturdy and elegant leather quiver. "I know it's n-not often you don't use the fujin yumi, but I thought it might be nice to have, either way."
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā IT COMES AS NO SURPRISE that Sakura is one of the first to approach Takumi on his birthday - he would be more shocked if she hadnāt been. If nothing else, he can always count on her to put a smile on his face. Heās never really made that big of a deal about his birthday, but he would be lying through his teeth if he claimed he wasnāt happy to hear the people around him wish him well. Though theyāre frequently in the midst of turmoil, heās lucky enough to receive birthday wishes (which surprise him in and of themselves), and even a couple of gifts. Which, of course, despite all of his awkwardness and avoidance, he graciously manages to accept.
Heās more than a little curious about the contents of the box she offers, and he thanks her as he takes it into gloved hands. Whatās within it causes him to raise his eyebrows, and he admires the new quiver with almost childish wonder. It looks capable of handling his strict training regimen, and itās pleasing to the eye, as well. Sakura is correct, he doesĀ almost always choose the Fuujin Yumi over a standard bowāitās what gives him worth, after allā but Takumi has always been sure to keep up his training with average yumi alongside his divine weapon. The gods know heās gone through countless arrows, quivers, and even yumi themselves on occasion while doing so. As such, Sakuraās gift is both practical and welcome.Ā
He closes the box carefully, not wanting to somehow damage nor drop the wonderfully crafted quiver, and his expression softens. The winter air is cold, but his heart is warm, and a small smile tugs at his lips as he tugs his sister into a one-armed hug. His mood is quite possibly the greatest itās been in quite some time, and itās visible in the way his usual tired smile manages to, for once, reach shining copper eyes.
āYou never know. I might need it.ā While his words are meant to encourage and reassure her, they arenāt untrue. āThank you, Sakura. Iāll make sure I take good care of it.ā
ā Ā How many people probably gave Takumi this as a gift? More than he could count on his hand. Insecurities bubbled inside the samurai, but that anxiety meant little to him. So what if he was nervous, especially with the likely rate that heāll look like a fool? He couldnāt back down like a coward on such a special day! He would just convert that nervous energy into forcing his feet to go meet with the princeā simple as that.
Ā Ā Still, it couldnāt hurt to get something a little extra. He needed to make this special after all. Taking a bit of a detour, Hinata hadnāt noticed that the time had flown past him and it was sunset. Scrambling, he rushed with both his basket in hand as well as his initial present, rushing to go find his liege.
Ā Ā ā Lord Takumi ā¦!! Iām glad I made it in time. Phew. ā
Ā Ā He exhaled a sigh of relief, night having yet to fall before he raised the rather large basket he had brought, gesturing to it. It was filled to the brim with cabbage and uncooked rice. He had taken a trip to the fields, evident by the dirt all over his current attire.
Ā Ā ā I heard one time you were glad you could get all the rice you wanted, and youāre always telling your sister to eat her veggies, so⦠ā As he trailed off in his explanation, the samurai began to laugh a bit to himself. ā Pfffhahaha !Ā I totally went overboard, didnāt I? Well, itās all for you ! Oh !! And this. ā
Ā Ā Taking out from under his other arm, he pushed forth a wrapped box.
Ā Ā ā I noticed your gloves were getting a little frayed, so⦠I went to have some new ones made for you. If these are the umpteenth ones you got today, consider āem a nice spare to show off, I guess, heh ! Pfft, whatever, happy birthday, Lord Takumi ! I hope you had a good one ! ā
{ happy birthday @windstrike !! }
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā IT WAS ALMOST SURPRISING TO TAKUMI that Hinata hadnāt approached him sooner - while he wouldnāt think much of it about anyone else, his boisterous, loyal retainer was certainly someone he expected to see on his birthday. Despite Hinataās late arrival, however, Takumi still managed to be shocked by it. When finally Hinata showed his face, he was taken aback by the way the other presented a basket full of produce with pride. It appeared to be freshly-harvested, judging by how disheveled its holder appeared. At first, he didnāt notice the box under Hinataās arm at all, too focused on the gigantic basket.
āHinata, this...ā In disbelief, Takumi trailed off, raising his eyebrows as he was left struggling to form a coherent sentence. What could he possibly say? Hinata was right, he hadĀ gone overboard, so he saw no need to confirm it. But he couldnāt say it was a bad thing; in fact, it was quite the opposite. Takumi found himself unable to tear his gaze away from the basket until Hinata spoke up again, finally realizing that he was carrying something else. Thankfully, that gave him reason to speak up again.
"My gloves, huh?" As he repeated the comment, he found himself examining the ones he wore. True to his retainerās words, they were looking a bit too well-loved. āHowād you notice that?āĀ
The question was almost silly to ask, Takumi realized - he was talking to Hinata, of all people. If anyone at all were to notice such a minuscule detail, it wouldāve been at least one of his two dedicated retainers. They'd been at his side for years, and he was certain that they knew him just as well as his siblings did (or perhaps better, with the exception of Sakura). Should any detail in Takumiās appearance or emotional state change, both were there to help, and it was things like Hinataās practical gift that reminded him just how grateful he was for that.
Pursing his lips, he took a look at the new pair. They appeared to be a perfect fit, and sturdy to boot. ā...Nobody else has given me these today, though. Thanks, Hinata.ā Placing the new gloves back in their box, he offered Hinata a genuine smile. With a laugh, he cast a glance back at the immense amount of rice and vegetables, resting his free hand on the curve of his hip. āWhy donāt you share some of that with me?ā
It's a special day, and Kisaragi wanted it to be the best for his father, since it's Takumi's birthday. As the younger bowman gave one of his characteristic running hugs, he grinned up, speaking fast, "Happy birthday, father! It'll be the best day today for you! What did you want for your birthday? We can always go hunting or spend time practicing our archery together!"
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā EVEN WITH ALL OF HIS STRENGTH, Takumi doubted that he would ever be able to completely handle Kisaragiās ecstatic hugs. It was impossible not to at least partially lose his footing, but he would never complain. He was quick to catch his son in a tight grip just as he always did, grunting out a āthank youā as he struggled to keep both of them from falling over. Kisaragi was undoubtedly more thrilled for Takumiās birthday than he was himself, but he couldnāt blame him. Through all of their time apart, they hadnāt gotten the chance to see one another on their respective birthdays. Takumi knew Kisaragi loved him, so his excitement made sense, and though he kept it to himself, he found it endearing.
His sonās words were a flurry from his lips, and Takumi couldnāt help but laugh. Had he not been used to Kisaragiās mannerisms already, he likely wouldnāt have been able to understand a single word (other than, of course, his initial birthday wishes).
āI donāt know, Kisaragi. I think it might be too cold for anything like that.ā The chilly temperature of his season of birth had never stopped him before, but for once in his life, Takumi felt he could allow himself a brief respite. Righting himself and letting both of their feet rest properly along the ground beneath them, he lifted both of his eyebrows. He worried that his answer was unsatisfactory - or perhaps even dismissive, in Kisaragiās eyes, and decided to continue, hoping to right any wrongs he may have made.
āI think Iād be okay with anything you come up with, though. Being able to spend time with you like I should,ā like Kisaragi always deserved, āis good enough for me.ā
"Ah Child, good thing I found you." A beaming smile on the mother's face. Handing over a medium sized gift she nodded her head "Happy birthday Takumi~" handing the gift over.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā IT WAS RARE THAT Takumi let himself feel truly free as of late. The older he got, the less of a right to do so that he felt he had. Yet his dear mother easily broke down those walls of his, illuminating the darkness with her light. He had no idea how, nor did he care; all Takumi knew was that she carried herself with a warmth that could lift his spirits no matter the circumstance. Throughout his life, the comfortableness he felt around her had never once changed for as long as he could remember. Every day, he was glad that it didnāt appear to plan to, either.
As long as it was Mikoto, Takumi felt he could allow himself a brief moment of childish glee. A smile spread across his lips as he graciously received the present his mother bestowed upon him, grateful for both it and simply for her presence.
āThank you, Mother.ā His eyes shone as he looked between the box and the woman who had given it to him. āYou didnāt have to give me anything, but⦠Iām really happy you did.ā
"Prince Takumi I heard Kamui mention that it was your birthday, so I stopped by to wish you a happy birthday." A hand reached out holding what appeared to be a medium-sized book, undoubtedly a gift Siegbert had retrieved for the holy bowman after finding this days detail out. Inside of it were different drawings of bow technics and stances the boy has seen the other take during battle, while it would not be a helpful learning tool the crown prince hoped it was a worthwhile present.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā YOUNG PRINCE SIEGBERT WAS not someone Takumi expected to speak with on that particular day, yet there he stood, prepared with a present no less. A part of him was suspicious, but even Takumi could admit that there was next to no chance that Siegbert bore any ill will. A gift was a gift, no matter who it was from, and if heād said heād heard the details from Kamui, which made perfect sense, as flustered as the idea made him.
āKamui told you that? ā¦Why?ā Perhaps he shouldnāt have been as surprised as he seemed, but he wasnāt aware that Kamui was spreading such things. She must have been more excited for his birthday than he was. He took the book offered to him with a look of bewilderment still lingering on his features, expression unchanging as he opened it to briefly flip through its pages.
The contents did nothing but rouse his curiosity further, though Takumi had hoped it would be sated by them. Heād never seen anything quite like the drawings enclosed before - had Siegbert had them commissioned? Or could Takumi have perhaps simply never come across such a thing? It seemed almost personalized, and that was what piqued his interest the most. While definitely curious, Takumi didnāt feel as though it was his place to ask for details. Shifting on his feet, he looked back up at Siegbert, no less surprised but certainly thankful.
āI donāt know where you got your hands on something like this, but⦠itās pretty well put together.ā Interesting, too, though he kept that to himself. āUh, thank you, Prince Siegbert.ā

Ā Leon had told himself that there was nothing he could get Takumi for his birthday that he wouldnāt like, and it was this thought, repeated again and again, that had convinced him to buy the other prince a Nohrian bow. The reason Leon had settled on a bow of all things was because, even though Takumi had the Fuujin Yumi, and many other yumi at his disposal, Leon had never seen him use a Nohrian bow, and thought he might enjoy learning how to use one. It shouldnāt have been too difficult for him, with how skilled he was in archery, but thought he would appreciate the opportunity anyway.
Ā And yet, as he held said bow in his hands before leaving to find his lover, the worry he had tried so hard to expel came back in full force. Would Takumi even be happy to receive his gift? If he wanted to try Nohrian bows, he could have very easily gotten one himself, but he hadnāt. It didnāt cross Leonās mind that Takumi might not have tried to learn before because he himself was worried, or that he didnāt want to stray from something he was comfortable with.
Ā Forcing himself to appear calm when he caught sight of him, he approached Takumi, trying to conceal his present behind his back.
Ā āHappy birthday, Takumi,ā Leon said, a small smile on his lips as he brought the weapon forward and fought to keep the smile from faltering. āI know this isnāt much, but⦠Iām afraid after last year I couldnāt outdo myself. I thought you might enjoy the potential challenge that might come from using a Nohrian bow anyway, though, and this one is completely yours to train with as you see fit.ā
Ā And then, lowering his voice so no one nearby could possibly hear, he whispered, āI love you.ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā IF THERE WAS ANYONE Takumi genuinely expected to gift him something he enjoyed, it was Leon. He wouldnāt have necessarily minded if Leon neglected to give him a gift at all, but regardless of what it was, he was positive he would enjoy it. While he wasnāt necessarily waitingĀ for Leon to find him, he found it hard to keep his interest contained as the Nohrian prince strode toward him. It was all he could do not to stand on the tips of his toes and attempt to peer behind his back.
At Leonās initial statement, Takumi gave a dismissive wave of his hand. āDonāt worry. Itās not like I expected anything else like that. Thanks, though.ā Last year, Leonās present to him had been simple in appearance but grandiose in sentimentality, and he still cherished it dearly. Takumi didnāt expect anything quite so meaningful, but he was morbidly curious regardless. They knew each other well, and Takumiās tastes werenāt exactly difficult to figure out in the first place.
Yet despite those factors, Leon still managed to catch him off guard with his gift as he revealed it. Takumi had never used a Nohrian bow before - he hadnāt so much as nocked an arrow with one, actually. Though known widely as an expert archer, Takumi feared that only applied to Hoshidan methods. His knowledge could easily be applied to Nohrian weapons, but heād still never tried to do so. The only time he had handled a Nohrian bow was when he was passing one to its rightful wielder, or caring for weapons that needed a bit of improvement.
Turning the bow over in his hands, he examined its craftsmanship, noting how different it was from his Fuujin Yumi - or any yumi, for that matter. While he hadnāt had a chance to actually use a Nohrian bow before, he already knew they were of a different structure than the yumi he was so familiar with. They were more symmetrical and not as large, but just as effective. He was well aware that a weaponās prowess was not based solely on itself, but on the soldier who wielded it - in that sense, a Nohrian bow should have, in theory, been just as useful to him as one of his yumi. While he often doubted his own skill, he at least knew his way around the battlefield as an archer. Whether he was truly as good as he appeared to be with the Fuujin Yumi was left up to debate on his eyes, but he didĀ handle a bow and its arrows with ease.
Despite Leonās low volume and how distracted heād been by his thoughts, Takumi heard what he said, and he averted his gaze almost immediately, looking virtually everywhere except into his loverās eyes. His face lit in a blushāone he reflexively tried to hide behind his sleeveāand he couldnāt fight the smile that crept upon his lips, either. How many times had they exchanged those words with one another? It had to have been countless by then, yet Takumi couldnāt grow tired of them; he doubted that he ever would no matter how much time had passed.
āI-I love you, too,ā he murmured just as softly as Leon had, lowering his hand back to his side. Clearing his throat, he spoke louder once more, as though pretending he hadnāt said anything else to divert attention back to Leonās present. āIāll have to make sure I meet your expectations with this. I canāt have you thinking you wasted your time, yāknow.ā
"Happy... Birthday, Lord Takumi. You're a really good archer and I respect you... Thank you for being so kind!"
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā SETSUNAāS APPROACH CAUGHT TAKUMI a bit off guard, and at first he didnāt realize exactly why she had in the first place. However, as soon as she spoke, he blinked once, then twice in surprise. If there was one thing he knew about her, it was that despite her aloof mannerisms, she usually seemed to mean every word she said. While she often frustrated him to no end, he could at least acknowledge that.
Truthfully, he wasnāt quite sure how to react to that revelation. Setsuna was a formidable archer herself, and hearing that she did, in fact, respect him and his skill warmed his heart. As someone who frequently doubted his own ability, any sort of praise helped to alleviate his worries, if only for a moment. But despite her thanks, he knew he hadnāt truly been kind to her at all (a shameful fact he admitted only to himself). Briefly, he debated labeling her a fool and contesting her statement - but he caught himself, knowing it would do nothing for either of them. Instead, he breathed an almost inaudible sigh, the smallest of smiles curving his lips. She had come to him to wish him well, hadnāt she? Acting rude was no way to thank her.
āHuh. Is that so?ā For once, he was glad she seemed so absentminded. His response was stiff and awkward - but perhaps she wouldnāt notice. His tone was likely the gentlest heād ever used with her, and even for Takumi himself, it was a welcome change of pace.Ā āI⦠Thanks, Setsuna.ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āOH, RIGHT. Itās my birthday, huh...?ā Color him surprised - Takumi had completely lost track of time. Days seemed to pass much faster when involved in a war that took up most of his time and focus.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā She tries to suppress her laugh as her gaze locks onto the rather unruly state he was in, but all that does is allow a snort to escape from her nose. Vermilion eyes take notice of the white feathers that had gotten stuck in every possible place they could, and it leads her to only one conclusion.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āYou look like you were assaulted by a herd of pegasi.ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā WHILE TAKUMI HAD HOPED TO escape to his room, or at least somewhere private before anyone could spot him, he hadnāt had such luck. He only wished to rid himself of the intruding feathers to make himself presentable again, but of courseĀ his sister, of all people, would catch him. Slinking away was out of the question while Hinoka had him in her sights, and he paused, roughly folding his arms. Hinokaās assumption wasnāt wrong,Ā per se, but it had hardly been his fault, nor the fault of the pegasi themselves, technically speaking.
āY-yeah, well... I kind of was.ā That day in particular was Ā not a lucky one for him. Plucking stray feathers from his hair, Takumi scowled, knowing it would likely be days before he could get them all out. With his luck, heād even find pegasus feathers scattered around the bath despite his efforts to brush them out. That was the last thing he needed - just the idea was enough to cause his heart to skip a beat in embarrassment.
āI was making sure they were all fed and watered, and something freaked them out,ā he grumbled, blowing away a single feather that had chosen to fall atop his nose with a breath from his lips. He still had no idea what it was that frightened the mounts, exactly, but he suspected it was caused by someone otherĀ than himself.Ā āIt took me forever to calm them down. I thought theyād end up escaping.ā
( sorry ive been kind of inactive again!! i havent been doin so hot but im working on stuff as best i can. hopefully ill get some stuff done here within the next couple of days, if not at least one of my other blogs... you can bet ill be here all day on takumis birthday, too! )

Ā Ā āYou know itās true.. You only ever do this during the winter or the time leading up to it.ā
Ā Still, Leon couldnāt deny that Takumi was right. Even though cold weather hardly affected him, the heat was the exact opposite. It was something to do with the climates of their respective countries, he assumed. He had managed to get used to constant sunlight, but he had yet to build up a tolerance for the heat that often accompanied it.
Ā Ā āThatās different. Itās much easier to combat the cold than the heat. Cold requires extra layers, and perhaps a seat by a fire, but heat is almost impossible to ward off.ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā LEON HAD A PERFECTLY valid point, and Takumi absolutely hated it. Technically speaking, the heat wasĀ more difficult to handle as opposed to the cold, but as someone who had grown in the land of the sun, he was infinitely more accustomed to the heat and sunlight. Though sensitive to cold, Takumiās yumi did have a tendency to tousle his hair and clothing with intense winds as he fired its arrows, and he appeared to have no problem with it. A chill in the air, on the other hand, was an entirely different story.
āI already wear plenty of layers,ā he grunted, tugging his bandana over his lips and muffling what he argued. āIf itās cold enough that I can feel it through those, then itās too damn cold. I donāt care what you say.ā Or, perhaps, he felt cold too easily, but Takumi was far too proud to admit to that.
Ā āI donāt know, Takumi. It must be the right time of year if youāre complaining about the cold,ā Leon chuckled quietly, his eyebrows raised in amusement at the other princeās behavior. As surely as Takumi would complain about the cold, Leon would tease him about it.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āOH, SHUT UP.ā If Takumiās face wasnāt already flushed from the cold, it wouldāve been obvious that he was blushing in embarrassment.Ā āYou wouldn't be saying that if it was warm. Youād be complaining that itās too hot before it even is.ā
