protection is etched into dean’s very being , his entire life has been built upon the single order to protect his little brother. with hunting thrown in too , dean sees this as his role , the only job he is good for. this protective nature isn’t just reserved for sam or close friends/family. it extends to pretty much anybody that is in a position of vulnerability. he has this tendency to carry the weight of the world , therefore when dealing with someone such as the victim in a hunt , dean will take on all responsibility for them and protective mode is activated. this of course means he’ll carry the guilt should he fail to protect someone , even with the knowledge that he’s done everything in his power to do so.
