⠀⠀— So, his assumption was correct. The new presence was one of the island residents. That very presence was faint— almost too faint to even notice. But even the natural beasts of these woods can only blend in so well. The flash from his blade was more of a test than one of actual, harmful intent. It got the woman's attention fairly well— a familiar face he hasn't seen in quite some time.
⠀⠀⠀⠀"That was my polite hello." It's hard to tell if that was a sincere clarification, or the rare occasion of dry humor on Adam's part. "... You haven't been here in quite some time. Hm— neither have I. But I don't recall this being one of your hobbies... Why are you out here?"
⠀⠀⠀❛ ⠀I suppose I've had nastier hellos. Still, you won't get any friends that way, you know.⠀ ❜⠀
⠀⠀⠀SHE ⠀uses her foot to push against the boulder, forcing her body to lean off of it and advance. Clearly he's finished throwing wayward beams around. Although momentarily preoccupied with sheathing her additional dagger at her hip ( because it was never a good idea to fully relax in a place like this ), that simpering smirk returns before long. Her voice drips sticky-sweet, solely because she's fairly convinced he hates when she does that. ⠀❛ ⠀Oh ? You took note of that, did you ? So that was a polite 'hello' and 'I've missed you'. Well, now I'm not mad at all anymore— just flattered. ⠀ ❜
⠀⠀⠀The breezy attitude drops fairly quickly, however, because she doubts he'll play along with a forcible change of subject. Aelin inspects her nailbeds instead, as if that's suddenly much more interesting than tugging on his incredibly limited patience. ⠀❛ ⠀I can think of plenty of reasons. This isn't an island that rewards the lazy, as I'm sure you know well enough by now. Being physically fit is one thing, but unfortunately... being capable of killing doesn't guarantee a good kill. Everyone forgets to stretch that muscle.⠀ ❜⠀
⠀⠀Her guess is right. He loathes the honeyed tone she takes in response. She could probably sense his eyes rolling away from her, a groan suppressed as he takes another look of their surroundings. Once she ends up explaining herself, Adam gives a nod of agreement— it's far too easy to get complacent here. The occasional city-wide panic keeps people on their toes, but not frequently enough.
⠀⠀⠀⠀"Hm, you're right... So keeping the senses sharp pays off, eventually." Is that also his reasoning for putting himself in danger like this? ... Mostly. But he has no reason to open up that much to an assassin, even if she's one of the few residents he's kept familiarity with over the years. "I'm not sure how long you've been here, but I think I'll start heading back now."
