The more I hear âA Sky Full of Starsâ by Coldplay, the more Iâm convinced that the only reasonable interpretation of the lyrics is that heâs declaring his devotion to some malevolent cosmic eldritch god.

I was gonna type a longer theory for New Capenna out, but I really donât feel like it. So Iâll just give brief points and explain why Iâm right if/when I am.
WUB crime family is going to be a mafia
UBR crime family is going to be a cartel, specializing in either drugs or casinos (maybe both and everything else).
BRG crime family will primarily deal in extortion (I donât know of a specific name for such a kind of criminal organizations)
RGW crime family will play into gangsâ history of infiltrating and influencing labor unions
GWU crime family: I have no idea. This is honestly a really weird set of colors for a criminal organization. I expecting them to be core-blue, though, and have some warped utopian ideal.
Yeah, OK, I was way off. Carry on.

Was energy ever considered for NEO?
No. The set already had plenty going on.

Was there any talk to giving the Shrines a creature type like incarnation? Feels weird that they don't have a type at all.
Iâm not sure much else fits.

Here is a magic format that Iâve been brewing in my head for a while that I call âClashâ, based off the clash packs that were made for M15, FRF, and ORI. I liked the idea of taking 2 functional decks, and combining their components to make a new deck and wanted to see if a format could be made from it. Let me know what you think.
Players: 1v1
Setup: Each player builds 3 decks of at least 60 cards, all of which are legal in a predetermined constructed format. No more than 4 of any card with the same English name, other than Basic Lands and cards whose rules text states otherwise, may be included BETWEEN ALL 3 DECKS (for example, if one of your decks contains 2 Arid Mesas and another contains 1, you are only allowed up to 1 in the third). All 3 decks should be sleeved identically; however, it is recommended that small tabs (or something similar) of 3 different colors be inserted in the front of the sleeves in order to distinguish which card belongs to which deck as it is the responsibility of both players to return their decks to the original state at the conclusion of each game.
Game 1: Both players BRIEFLY shuffle each of their 3 decks (no more than 10 seconds for each deck), then for each deck, reveals cards from the top until they reveal 4 cards or until they reveal a nonland card, whichever comes last. These cards will remain revealed until a game begins where the deck that they belong to is played. At this point, a player chosen at random will decide who the starting player is. Both players, beginning with the starting player, will then choose which of their opponentâs decks will be the library for its owner for Game 1. (Shuffle again before starting)
Note: If a card instructs a player to find a card from outside the game, they are to find it from one of their non-active decks. Players may also, at the start of the game, find a creature from a non-active deck to serve as their companion (so long a their library meets the appropriate requirements, of course). In either case, players must be clear as to which deck the card they are finding is coming from. They should NOT shuffle so as to keep the originally revealed cards revealed. As stated, decks are to be returned to their original contents at the conclusion of each game.
Game 2: The player who lost Game 1 will decide who the starting player of Game 2 will be. Then, both players, beginning with the starting player, will choose from the decks that their opponent owns that havenât been played yet which will be its ownerâs library for Game 2.
Game 3: If a winner has not been decided by Game 2, the loser of Game 2 decides who the starting player for Game 3. Then, beginning with the starting player, each player chooses a deck from ALL 3 of their opponentâs decks to be REMOVED FROM ITS OWNERâS CARD POOL for the duration of Game 3 (they will not be able to use any cards from that deck, even when finding a card from outside the game). Each player will then have ~10 minutes to construct a deck that will serve as their library for Game 3 from the cards in the decks that remain in their card pool. There are no special requirements for this composite deck; so long as itâs at least 60 cards, itâs fair game. Companions and cards that are found from outside of the game will be obtained from cards still in a playerâs pool, but not in their starting library.
Hmm...
Nailed it.

One Mana Mythics Commentary
So this week was a toughie. I admit, when I came up with the idea, I couldnât quite come up with anything right then and there, but I thought âwell, it canât be too hard. Iâll run it anyway.â After checking out the workshop on the discord I realised the mess I had put everyone into.
I donât mean to imply the cards are bad! None of them are bad, though some of them are ridiculously broken, though even those might be salvagable. In general it was just tough. The best answer was probably to just make a card thatâs only relevant late game, but since thatâs what all the existing one mana mythics were, most people wanted to avoid that. I think some people made it work, but it definitely wasnât easy.
One cool idea a few people did was a saga. Thatâs a clever way of making sure stuff played on turn one wonât pay off on turn one. There were also a lot of black cards that had heavy life payments, in the vein of reanimate or deathâs shadow. I think that sounds good, but life payments are hard to balance especially at one mana. Lastly, as with nearly every week, There were no less than 4 monoe-white card draw spells. I get that itâs on everyoneâs mind, but jeez, you donât have to do it for every contest! Itâs hard enough to make one as is! But letâs get on with the commentary.
Darn. I wanted to make the Equip cost {1}, but I was thinking that would be really strong. Shouldâve followed my heart. It is hard to figure out without opportunities to playtest.
Winner Tsunami!! Big Splash Contest Winners
A big round of applause for this weekâs winners!!!
Generalâs Inspiration @i-am-the-one-who-wololoes
Hollis, Thessisf Dispatcher @wilsonosgoodmcman
Joraga Gigantomancer @kytheon4-4
Before continuing on the commentary for each of those stellar cards, let me tell you some things about the challenge as a whole. While I feel the ratio of cool to normal cards was higher than usual, the same was also true cards that missed the point of the challenge vs the cards that didnât. But I think itâs partly my fault because maybe I didnât deliver it as loud as I should.
That said, I think that designs that were placed in the group commentary are stellar, and could have been winners in their own right in a different time. Again, thanks everyone for sending their designs. This week was full of surprises!
On to the winners!
Generalâs Inspiration: I donât keep track of the contest winners, but I feel this is the first time Iâm picking i-am-the-one-who-wololoes , one of the biggest fans of the Fair, as winner and Iâm really happy! Maybe as happy as winning clashes! Love the fact that the three colored enchantment has three abilities, and they tie into each other nicely! Also like the fact that you associate clash and fight. About the power level, I feel it depends on whatâs already on the board, but it will certainly have an impact worth more 3 mana for sure!
Hollis, Thessisf Dispatcher: The wording on this card as a whole is damn witty, it shows you gave serious thought about everything like any Dimir Azorius spy that respects their job! Reusing exiled cipher cards was something that the mechanic desperately needed, and the damage splitting both for you and the opponents is strong, balanced and fresh! Canât even imagine the political power of this bad boy on the kitchen table!
Joraga Gigantomancer @kytheon4-4 While the other two winners got their âAâ for effort and elegance, Joraga Gigantomancer is the card that I feel embodies the spirit of the challenge best. Simple, fun, splashy, and if you do the math, you will also see that itâs a bomb in disguise, rivaling the power of the dreaded Craterhoof. On top of that, both the art and the name of this Timmy-god are throwbacks to two Zendikar cards, Gigantomancer and Gigantiform. Whatâs not to love?      Â
This is awesome! I regret that I didnât catch that âanother target playerâ doesnât actually work and should have been âtarget playerâ or âa player of your choiceâ.
I just want to express my opinion that this secret lair is a very very dangerous slope to go down. Have you guys not learned from Nalthni Dragon/Nexus of fate? Also these are essentially being printed directly to the reserved list since WOTC wonât own the licensing forever, which is something stated wouldnât happen.
While the Secret Lair is the one chance to get the Walking Dead versions of these cards, we have the ability to print the Magic versions of these cards in future products. So, letâs say Negan becomes a popular Commander, we can print the Magic version (same card mechanically, but with a Magic name and art) in any number of future products. This is not a case of us being unable to make more of a popularly played card.
I feel bad because I think this is a pretty bad thing for Wizards to do, but Iâve pretty much decided Iâm gonna buy it.
