Heads up: Check out the masterpost for trigger warnings.
A rebel flag waved proudly atop the White House.
The rebels had been waiting for days. The streets were still riddled with flames, smoke filling the air. Most of the rebels had headed back outside, taking up positions to fight the military. Others stayed inside, making sure the President and his soldiers didnât escape.
Jackson was sitting by himself- he hadnât left the roof since President Redding surrendered. But he had a frequent visitor.
âStill here?â Joel asked.
âI canât help itâŠâ Jackson muttered. âI wanna be ready for when Mom gets here.â
Joel squatted down next to his son, and Jackson glanced at him. âStill not frozen?â
âLooks like it.â Joel studied the veins in his arms, curious if they would turn red again. âIâm glad Iâm still able to help end this thing⊠You got the syringe ready?â
Jackson reached into his backpack and pulled out the syringe. It was giving off a strong red glow. âDo you think sheâll even recognize me?â Jackson whispered, putting the syringe back.
âI do.â Joel nodded.
âAnd what if she doesnât? What if the nanobots donât let her see me as her son, but just something in her wayâŠâ Jackson whimpered. âWhat if⊠Iâm not enough for her?â
Joel wrapped an arm around Jackson, pulling him closer. âYouâre an unforgettable kid, Jackson. Her memories are probably full of moments with you.â
He whispered into Jacksonâs ear.
âDonât forget how important you are to her.â
Jackson breathed in slowly. He smelled ashes, blood, and smoke. I hope youâre rightâŠ
âIâll be here if you need me. Hopefully after all this⊠sheâll give me another chance.â Joel muttered that last part to himself.
Suddenly, the ground shook. And it shook hard. The largest flames whipped violently, and rebels stumbled to the ground.
A dark, looming figure with glowing red eyes slowly appeared in the distance. âHeyâŠâ Joel mumbled as he, Jackson, and the rebels watched it come closer. It was as tall as a skyscraper and had jet-black armor- yet still looked perfectly human.
Joel wondered, âIs that-â
âMom.â Jackson gasped.
Above Lorelai flew a horde of fighter jets, darting past her like bullets. Beneath her, an army of military soldiers marched into D.C., with rocket-loaded artillery, tethers, and handheld missile launchers.
They barely managed to stay on balance amidst Lorelaiâs footsteps.
âF-22 Raptors, HIMARS launchersâŠâ Joel said aloud, scanning them all. âHatchford doesnât need all that to capture a president.â Jackson glanced at his father, confused. âWha-what the heck did you just say?â
A few moments passed before a massive gunship appeared in the sky. Jackson and Joelâs pupils widened as the plane blasted a lethal amount of missiles around the White House.
Scrap metal blasted into the air, multiple explosions violently shaking the building. Both father and son lost their balance, stumbling face-first onto the roof.Â
â...Thaaat definitely isnât the plane Hatchford used in Montana.â Jackson winced, and Joel pulled him close. âAn AC-130 GunshipâŠâ His father whispered. â...The Angel of Death.â
The Angel of Death? Jackson stared at it. The gunship left a massive smoke trail that resembled huge, terrifying wings. Thatâs pretty spot onâŠ
Then Lorelai walked through that smoke- and for just a moment, she looked like a warrior whoâd just come down from heaven.
âWOAHHHâŠDAD, D-DO YOU SEE THAT?!â Jackson gasped, just as the gunship launched more missiles at the building. âGET DOWN!â Joel ducked to cover Jacksonâs body from the incoming shards of scrap metal.
âARGH!!!â
He growled- his eyes and veins slowly flickering red. âDAD?â Jackson asked.
Scrap metal was something Joel could handle- for a little while, anyway. But trying not to freeze up at the same time?
That mightâve been a bit more than he could chew.
âDAD?!â Jackson shouted from beneath him, watching his fatherâs veins and eyes turn red. âCâMON DAD, FOCUS⊠FIGHT IT OFF!â
Joel didnât move.
Jackson pushed his father off and tried to get him back. âSNAP OUT OF IT...â He shook Joelâs head, hoping thatâd help. âPLEASE!â
His eyes repeatedly shifted from Joel to the Angel of Death, wondering if itâd strike again.
Should I use the syringe early? Jackson thought, weighing his options. I could mind sync with him⊠but then, our physical bodies would both be vulnerable-
ââŠT- This is intimidation.â Joel stuttered as he slowly came to. âDAD.â Jackson sighed. âI saw whoâs in that gunship,â Joel muttered as his eyes and veins shifted back.
Jackson kept anxiously looking from his Dad to the city-turned-war zone.
Lorelai was getting even closer, her feet stomping through the flames. The gunship circled over her while raptors zipped around buildings, continuing the bombardment throughout D.C. The rebels were fighting for their lives, with the explosions and gunfire failing to cease.
Jackson turned back to his father. âThe Angel of Death? Whoâs in there, Dad?â Joel let out a soft wince as he struggled to answer.
âIt-itâs Hatchford.â
As if those words triggered something inside the Secretary of Defense, he started to shout from the plane- âGET OUT OF THE WAY, SON OF LORELAI!â Hatchford yelled as he fired another shell near them, making both Jackson and Joel fall backwards.
Thatâs enough⊠Jackson growled, and Joel noticed the determined look on his sonâs face.
â...Itâs time, isnât it?â Joel stood up and helped his son to his feet. âYeahâŠâ Jackson huffed. âBe careful- remember that this isnât her, but what Hatchfordâs forcing her to be,â Joel said, his voice breaking through the noise. âShe cares about you.â
Jackson nodded, though he wasnât sure if he believed that last bit.
âI love you, son.â Joel pulled Jackson in for a hug.
Jackson was quiet for a moment. The chaos around him didnât stop, but he slowed himself down, just to take in this moment.
âI love you too, Dad.â
Then, Jackson leaped off the White House, landing with a huge crater. He marched straight toward Lorelai, and she stormed toward the White House. As she got closer, Lorelai came across the Washington Monument- a towering memorial dedicated to the first president of the United States.
Hatchford took advantage of this opportunity.
âScare him off, Lorelai.â Hatchford took out the Goliath Control Tablet, pressing buttons rapidly. âShove it down.â
Lorelai paused, right next to the monument.Â
Jackson stopped, confused. The soldiers and rebels also halted their fighting, trying to understand why she wasnât moving. While Joel, Maxine, and even the President observed from the White House.
What is she doing?
With one powerful hand, she slammed the Washington Monument to the ground.
It crashed with an ear-piercing collapse, chunks of debris and rubble flinging through the air. âOHHH SHITâŠâ Jacksonâs eyes widened as a wave of dust rushed toward him. He brought his arms up to his face and braced himself for the impact.
For a long moment, no one could see him- not even his parents. Joel called out to him as the dust began to spread throughout D.C. The rebels wondered if Jackson was even still there.
Some of the soldiers even raised their eyebrows.
But as the dust began to clear, the young Goliath charged out with his head held high.
âN-NO!â Hatchford shouted frantically. He used the tablet to force Lorelai after the President again. She resumed marching toward the White House, Jackson still in her way.
âYOU ARENâT STOPPING ME, KID!â The plane circled over Jackson. âYOU DONâT GET TO TAKE THIS VICTORY⊠YOU DONâT GET TO TAKE HER FROM ME!â
Jackson spat out some dirt and pulled out his syringe, ready to inject himself with GS189.
He and Lorelai finally met in the middle of the clearing. She didnât show any sign of stopping, but Jackson wasnât moving. âTHATâS IT,â Hatchford yelled, gripping the tablet. âI DIDNâT WANT TO DO THIS, BUTâŠâ
Hatchford held his breath for a moment.
âLORELAIâŠâ He quickly pressed buttons on the tablet, commanding her to do a new, more final action. âKILL HIM.â
Lorelai flinched- then her entire body began to twitch. Her eyes flickered like a flashing red traffic light.Â
Jackson stared at her. I-is she trying to resist Hatchfordâs control?
âNOW, LORELAI!â Hatchford shouted. âTHATâS AN ORDER!â Agonizing moments passed as the giant tried to disobey him.
She- sheâs trying to break free⊠Jackson gasped, wondering if heâd even have to use the syringe. Come on, Mom⊠COME ON.
Eventually, Lorelaiâs hand started to reach down after Jackson. It reached, then halted. Reached, halted. Over and over. But soon, it became more of a reach than a halt.
The sky disappeared as Lorelaiâs hand hung over Jackson.
Sheâs not strong enough to fight it, is she? Not alone.
Jackson took a deep breath and injected himself with GS189. His eyes and veins quickly turned red as he attempted to mind sync with his mother.
Youâre not alone, Mom.Â
Jackson tried to concentrate on connecting with her.
Me, Dad, the rebels- weâre not leaving youâŠ
I- Iâm right here.
Iâll help you fight this, okay?
Iâll help you break free.

(Parental G/T FLUUUUFFFF!!! If you've been reading ALL the Writing Wednesdays, you should know by now that Jackson has a thing for rocks, not just meatsticks. Well, TODAY I AM GOING TO ELABORATE ON THAT x10. Meatsticks, take a back seat for today)
Jackson scrambled up the boulders, trying to find his footing. He craved the challenge- Lorelai would carefully rearrange the tower each time, so it always kept things interesting. To her, two or three boulders were like oversized building blocks.
But to Jackson?
The ultimate climb of the century.Â
The boy growled as he wedged his hand into a gap. Many have fallen, their climbs ending in terrible defeat. Only those with a grip of steel, swift feet, and the wisdom of a thousand mountain goats have reached the top. He looked up, noticing how close he was to finishing. A bead of sweat rolled down his face, but Jackson began to grin.
Mom will tell the story of my climb over the campfire tonight- ahem- MY PERILOUS TALE WILL BE TOLD THROUGHOUT GENERATIONS, INSPIRING THE WEAKLINGS TO FOLLOW MY PATH- âAlmost there, baby.â Lorelai smiled, nudging him up with a finger.
Jackson grunted, trying to push it away. âNo, Mama! I gotta do it myself!â Lorelai went silent for a moment, then pulled back her fingertip. âAlright, tough guy.â She chuckled. Jackson let out a sigh of relief and continued to work his way up the boulders.
Eventually, he managed to place his hands at the top.
But struggled to pull up the rest of his body.
Câmon, CâMON! Jackson growled, clawing at the boulderâs smooth surface. His feet kept pressing onto the boulders, losing their grip, and slipping. Lorelaiâs fingers twitched- it looked like he might actually fall.
She didnât help him up.
Lorelai placed her hand beneath him- a safety buffer, just in case.
Jackson eventually found another crack to place his foot in, and hoisted himself up. âYES!â He panted, collapsing onto the top of the boulder. Jackson felt his heart race, his chest heaving up and down. A drop of drool slipped from his mouth.
âWell, look at you!â Lorelai said, and Jacksonâs head perked up. âYouâre a lot stronger than you seem, huh?â She tousled his hair, and Jackson smirked, flexing his muscles. A second later, he noticed how high up he was, and felt closer to his motherâs height.Â
Pride bubbled inside Jackson.
He eventually got on his feet and explored the top of the boulder. It didnât take long for Jackson to find his prize. Two rocks straight from the river- both were soothingly smooth, wonky-shaped, and different colors. Jacksonâs eyes glittered. âYou like âem?â Lorelai blushed as Jackson snagged up the pebbles.
âTHEYâRE AWESOME!â Jackson raised them both like they were trophies. He didnât care whether they were sedimentary, how theyâd survived for centuries, or any of the specifics. The boy just thought that rocks were cool- and that they made the perfect participants for his ârock wrestling matchâ.
âWe can have them fight by the campfire tonight!â Jackson grinned, already banging them together. âIâll call this one The Tear Jerker, and the other oneâŠâ He thought for a moment. âUh⊠Stinky Boot!â He said proudly.
â...Stinky Boot?â Lorelai raised an eyebrow, but shook it off. âI- Iâll go get the fire ready.â Lorelai got up to leave, but Jackson called out to her. âWAIT!â She immediately turned around, glancing at Jackson. He shrugged. âCould you help me down?â
Lorelai smiled.
âSure, baby.â
