Son of Lorelai, Chapter Twenty-Five
Heads up: Check out the masterpost for trigger warnings.
“Dad?” Jackson called out, rushing into the cave. Joel was jerking and flinching. His eyes and veins were even changing color. “D-DAD?!” Jackson placed his hand on his father’s chest- Joel’s heart was beating so fast that Jackson could feel it thumping out of his chest. “DAD-” The boy latched his hands on Joel’s shoulders. “DAD, ARE YOU OKAY?!”
Once Joel caught his breath, he looked his son in the eye- and hugged him. “Son…” He whispered into his ear. “I- I have so much to tell you about GS189… but, I don’t know how much time I have.”
“Y-you broke free.” Jackson said quietly. “How?”
“I hyperfocused on getting back to you, on resisting the nanobots’ control…” Joel pointed to his forehead. “But, if I’m being honest… your mother convinced me that it was possible to even beat it.”
“What do you mean…?” The words spilled out Jackson’s mouth.
“I mind synced with her.”
Jackson’s eyes grew wide. M-Mind syncing?
He took a deep breath, feeling both unsure and curious. “Tell me more about GS189.”
***
“So, you can switch between seeing the real world and inside your mind?” Jackson asked for clarity. “Yep… if you intensify your mind- think deeply- it becomes a world you can act as a… spectator in.”
“Okay… that’s the first thing. Next, you can mind sync…” Jackson said back, allowing his father to elaborate. “Yeah. You can sync into someone’s head, but I’m guessing it only works if that person was injected with GS189 too.” Joel glanced at his veins, noticing how the red glow had stopped.
“How do you mind sync?” Jackson asked.
“Focus on that person as hard as you can… It’s hard, but if you can pull it off… that person can walk through your mind. You can interact. Talk to one another.”
I can reach her.
“Got it…” Jackson nodded. “Third, and the most important one… You can resist the nanobots’ control, right?” “Uh-huh,” Joel grunted. “By focusing on why you wanna break out, and doing it to the point the nanobots can’t handle it…” He rubbed his temples. “It causes a moment of interference, just long enough to break free. But I don’t know for how long.”
“Well, what matters is that you’re here now,” Jackson reassured his father. “Thanks to you, now I know how we can gain some control back… how we fight back with our minds.”
“It’s really hard to maintain ALL these things, though,” Joel mentioned. “The more that you layer on, the more difficult it gets. Like… being frozen and mind syncing at THE SAME TIME.”
“Could that help to rush interference?” Jackson raised an eyebrow. “I don’t know… I’m thinking if you add too many layers, you’ll crash back to square one- which would be whatever the nanobots are forcing you to do.” Joel’s eyes and veins flickered red for a moment, and he clenched his head. “ARGH…”
“DAD?!” Jackson shrieked, but Joel held up a hand to show he was okay.
His eyes and veins eventually returned to normal, and a few seconds later, Joel continued.
“T-These new tactics can be useful, but the only way to end nanobots' control for good…” Joel growled shakily. “Is to break that damn tablet.”
Jackson thought hard for a moment. “We need to be strategic.” He sighed. “We gotta get the tablet, but we gotta convince Mom to break free first.” “Why?” Joel asked, and Jackson explained the situation. “Hatchford’s gonna use her to kill the President. If we don’t get her to break free in time… Redding’s a goner.”
Joel raised an eyebrow. “So… just go after the tablet?”
Jackson shook his head. “We don’t even know where the tablet’s gonna be… but Mom? She’s heading straight to the White House! We can position ourselves, get ready… it just makes more sense.”
“Okay, but don’t expect her to break free permanently. She won’t be free until that tablet’s broken….” Joel reminded his son. “Think of it like pausing the rampage.”
“Right…” Jackson nodded. He looked around and picked up a stray chunk of coal. Then, he started drawing out his plan on the cave wall. Joel watched as Jackson brought his idea to life.
“First, we’ll arrive before the military.” Jackson scribbled some rebels marching to D.C. “We’ll get the President to surrender, then take him and his army prisoner.” “By then, the military will probably be just coming in,” Joel said, and Jackson drew some soldiers.
“Sooo… I’ll mind sync with Mom- that’s part two of the plan. I’ll convince her to break free JUST LONG ENOUGH for us to do part three, break the tablet.” He drew a broken tablet and looked back at his father. “Will that work?”
“It’s a realistic plan, I’ll say that much.” Joel nodded. “But how are you gonna mind sync with Lorelai? You haven’t been injected with-”
“With this?” Jackson pulled a GS189-filled syringe out of his backpack.
Joel’s eyes grew wide. “H-how’d you get that?”
“At the facility…” Jackson shrugged. “I grabbed it when Dr. Feldman wasn’t paying attention.”
After a few seconds, Joel got out of the cart and grabbed his rifle. “Alright then… Three new tricks up our sleeve, and a three-step plan.” He looked at Jackson. “Go tell the rebels. Make sure they know what they’re doing.”
“Actually, could you guys include a side mission?” Maxine was next to the entrance of the cave, with two stallions by her side. Jackson grinned, excited to see the horses. “What’s up?” Joel asked. “The congresspeople…” Maxine said. “Redding’s been keeping them prisoner in the Capitol building. I was thinking you could send out a rescue team to free ‘em.”
Jackson glanced at his father. “You wanna lead the team, Dad?”
“ME?” Joel gasped. “But we don’t even know how long I have before the nanobots take control over me again… I could freeze up-” “Think about it this way.” Jackson said back, “If you go after the representatives, Maxine and I can go after the President. We have to be sneaky… it’ll be just us. But you’ll have an entire group of rebels to catch you if you fall.”
“Divide and conquer.” Maxine agreed. “Makes sense.”
“I’m just not sure…” Joel scratched his hair.
“Aw, how could you be afraid when you’re on one of those things?!” Jackson pointed to the majestic horses. “WE’LL BE RIDING INTO BATTLE IN STYLE!” “Hope you have hay, cause I sure didn’t bring any.” Maxine huffed.
“YEAH YOU DIDN'T!” Silas shouted from afar. “THEY’VE BEEN EATIN ALL MY STUFF!”
Jackson put the syringe in his backpack, then ran over to one of the stallions. “I’M GONNA NAME YOU SPITFIRE!” He hugged it tightly. “Good name…” Maxine smirked. “But remember, it’s a borrowed horse. You can’t keep it.”
“Oh yeah…” Jackson muttered, then looked the horse in the eyes. “You and me, baby.” He whispered so Maxine couldn’t hear. “We’re going places… It's us till the end of the war.”
Joel began to walk over to them. He wobbled around at first, but eventually found his balance. “I guess I get the gray one?” Joel pointed to it, and Maxine nodded. “What’ll you name yours?” She asked.
“Uh…” Joel let him sniff his hand. “Milo…? It means soldier.”
Maxine then took something out of her aviator jacket. “I got an extra radio for you… On the back is a sticky note that has Jackson’s and my frequencies.” She handed it to Joel. “So y’know… if you DO need us, just use the radio.”
“Okay…” Joel took the radio, then looked at his horse. “Let’s see how long I can even manage to hold the reins.”
***
Jackson had explained the plan to the rebels, and now they were getting ready to ride out of Emberwood. The rebels carried their torches as they lined up behind Joel, Jackson, and Maxine. “Well, I guess this is goodbye, Lil Lorelai.” Alma Jean walked behind them. She tugged along Silas by his arm. “Good luck.” She smiled, then glared at her husband.
“What?” He huffed. “You let THOUSANDS of strangers into OUR home, to prepare to save a girl that I want nothin to do with!” “That girl is your DAUGHTER.” Joel glared at Silas. “Oh, you’ve got something to say, pretty boy?” “I could stop saying shit and just shoot your head off.” Joel gripped his rifle the same way Silas had earlier. “And I’m not one to miss.”
Silas was about to reach for his gun, and Joel got ready to fire, but Alma Jean stopped them both. “He’s not looking for a duel.” She put a hand on her husband’s chest and pushed him backwards.
Maxine rode closer to Jackson. “Well… we’re gonna get this show on the road already?”
Right… It’s time to get Mom back.
“Rebels,” Jackson turned back to face his army. “I just want to say thank you for seven years of risking your lives for someone you didn’t even know, let alone if she was even human. All of you had your own reasons for joining the rebellion, but I think that there’s one we can all agree on.” Jackson tightened his grip on the reins.
“Freedom is something worth fighting for.”
Slowly, the rebels raised their hands to salute.
“Through this final battle, we symbolize a fight for freedom. Our country is taking it- they started with my mother, and they’ll end it with us.” Jackson growled. “So let’s go break the chains.”
After his speech, Jackson urged Spitfire forward and led them out of Emberwood.
Battle cries could be heard through the forest. Galloping hooves pressed off the rough terrain.
The horse-powered march could only be described as a huge, mythical blur of flames.

Writing Wednesday
PARENTAL G/T ANGST, with a lil fluff at the end :3 This is PART FOUR to the AU I started like... dang, I almost a month ago? Here's parts one, two, and three. Now that tiny Lorelai and her human son have found a promising solution- despite the stench- they have a chance at restoring Lorelai to her giant size. But what if it doesn't work?)
Jackson took a step forward, then two steps back.
“That’s a whole lotta thingies…” He muttered, remembering what the blue-liquid-filled grenade did to his mother. Part of him was terrified- and not just from the agonizing stench.
Last time he found something like this… it was awful.
What’s gonna happen this time?
“Hey, baby?” Lorelai looked back at him. “You okay?” Jackson’s eyes glanced at his five-inch mother. He was at a loss for words… until he took off his socks. Putting his hands inside them, Jackson took a deep breath, trying to summon all the confidence he had. “If- if I touch one of them while wearing my socks, will I be okay?”
Lorelai was unsure, but she didn’t have any better ideas. “We don’t really have a choice, do we?” Jackson grumbled, balling his sock-covered hands into fists. “No… not really.” He finally walked over to the box, examining it carefully. It had a label slowly peeling off it. He read it aloud. “Goliath Program CHARGE Prototype 2…”
Lorelai raised an eyebrow.
“Does that mean something important?” Jackson asked as he took one of the leaky, foul-smelling grenades, his hands trembling. Lorelai nodded. “Yeah… it means the Goliath Program was trying to make new weapons.” She explained. “So if the blue one made me small… this red one should make me big.”
“Goliath Program CHARGE Prototype 2 is way too long,” Jackson muttered. “Can we just call them CHARGE Grenades?” Lorelai shrugged. “I mean, that DOES sound cooler.” She smirked, but Jackson still had a frown on his face. “What if this doesn’t work?” He asked. “What if it makes things worse?”
“What if this CHARGE Grenade makes you smaller?”
Lorelai went quiet for a moment. That’s definitely a possibility… what if I shrink to the point that he can’t even see me? Her heart raced at the thought, but she tried to put on a brave face.
“Then we’ll figure it out.” She said, trying to hide the fear in her voice. “But I’ve got a feeling it’ll make me bigger.” Jackson nodded, feeling a bit better. He looked around the cave… it seemed big enough for his mother to grow back to her original height, but just barely.
“Okay…” He grunted and tried to pry open the grenade- “WHOA, WHOA, STOP!” She shouted, and Jackson immediately froze. “That thing can explode if you unscrew it wrong.” “E-explode?” He whimpered.
“You see how some of the liquid is dripping out?” She pointed at the grenade, and Jackson looked at the tiny drops falling out. “Yeah?” “Just get one of those drops on me… then run.” “Why should I run?” Jackson asked.
“Trust me…” Lorelai sighed, “I’m gonna need some room.”
Jackson followed her instructions and carefully held the grenade over his mother, waiting for a single drop to fall out. Lorelai braced herself, trying to think of it as a teardrop splashing onto her.
The moment the drop touched her, the liquid spread across her body like spilled paint. “OH GOD…” She pinched her eyes and covered her nose. “IT SMELLS TERRIBLE, UGH-” She fell to her knees, while Jackson watched her for a moment, confused and wanting to help.
Lorelai looked back up at him and shooed him away. Jackson dropped the grenade and scampered off, squatting against the cave wall. He pried off his “sock gloves” and watched his mother carefully.
Lorelai noticed how some of the liquid seeped into the cave floor. She shook her head in confusion. I’ll never understand why it does that…
It took a few minutes before Lorelai realized something was off- not with the liquid… but with her body. She held her breath, trying to brace herself as her skin began to stretch. H-here we go… ACK- Lorelai scratched her nails against the cave floor as a stifled, radio-static-like shrill escaped her mouth.
Jackson’s eyes grew wide. “M-MAMA?”
“STay BACK, babY…” Her voice crackled. C’mon… I can do this… She winced as her muscles stretched and tried to close her eyes. With one wrong twitch, she fell to the cave floor, causing a gigantic thump.
The bear took a few steps back, unsure what the hell was going on back there.
While Lorelai was down, Jackson glanced at her veins. He was almost certain that they were glowing a vibrant red. He wanted to come closer, to make her feel better. But Jackson stayed glued to the cave wall.
When Lorelai struggled back up, her back arched against the cave roof. I’m running out of room… Her tongue touched the tips of her sharpening fangs. Her eyes twitched from one place to another. Bits of rock dropped down, and Jackson shook some gravel out of his hair.
I gotta get out of here.
Lorelai turned to the cave entrance and began to crawl toward it. Her shoulders brushed against the rocky edges, while her fingers shattered minuscule fish bones. When the bear saw the dark, massive creature coming out of the cave, its ears turned backward.
The grizzly got ready to run- but Lorelai was going to give it a head start.
She unleashed a huge roar, sweeping the bear off its feet. It let out a terrified growl as it tumbled through the air, far away from its cave. The fish bones and leaves swept into the air, blowing away with the grizzly.
When the bear fell to the ground, it stayed down for a few moments. Lorelai stared at it, baring her fangs. That should knock some sense into it. She growled. When it got back up, the grizzly darted off into the forest, abandoning the hunt.
That’s right… Lorelai sighed. Never forget that I’m the apex predator.
Lorelai finally struggled out of the entrance and stood at full height. She stretched, safely cracking her back. Jackson was right behind her, running as fast as his little legs could take him. “MAMA!” He cheered, and Lorelai chuckled. She lowered her hand to him, and he quickly climbed on. “YOU'RE BIG AGAIN! IT WORKED!”
“See? I told ya it’d work.” She held him to her chest for a long, gentle hug. Jackson could hear his mother’s heart racing. “A-are you okay?” He asked, noticing that the veins on her wrists had stopped glowing. “That looked really painful…”
Lorelai raised him to her face, nuzzling Jackson’s belly with her nose. “...I’m okay, baby.” She smirked, and Jackson took her word for it. As long as he’s alright… I’ll be okay.
“So… what’d we learn?”
“Uh… don’t touch weird objects, being a giant is harder than it looks, and caves have a bunch of odd stuff in them,” Jackson said, and Lorelai nodded.
Yeah… that’s about right.

Growth Spurt
(Lemme crash this beautiful day with some scrumptious PARENTAL G/T ANGST! I've been meaning to write this so here we are. Writing Wednesday waits for no one? Nuh uh... I don't wait for Writing Wednesday.)
Welp… none of us were anticipating Jackson’s first growth spurt- except for Lorelai, of course. But that didn’t make it less terrifying.
Lorelai was rocking the child in the palm of her hand, gently whispering to him. “It’s okay, baby…” She said breathlessly. “You- you’re gonna be okay…”
She was mostly talking to herself.
MY BABY… Lorelai thought, her mind racing, MY BABY’S GONNA DIEEE…
Jackson trembled, fragile whimpers slipping from his lips. His arm was longer and wider than the other, completely out of proportion. It stung like an angry blaze underneath his skin, and worse… the arm was still growing.
He was just playing with rocks. Banging and clashing tiny pebbles like it was a wrestling match. Lorelai had been hovering overhead, guessing which one would win. But the moment that he got too excited, his body began to change.
The game ended before either rock could claim victory.
This never happened before… Lorelai thought to herself, trying to take deep breaths. I- I didn’t want this to happen.
She wiped a tiny tear off his cheek.
I don’t want him to be like me.
Lorelai stood 100ft tall, yet this small, human-sized boy brought her to her knees. She lowered herself to the grass, swaying his body with the flow of the wind. Lorelai’s mind spiraled back to the time she spent trapped inside the Goliath Program facility. The exact same man who made her a giant called her a monster, and the nation echoed his words.
That name- monster- had been ingrained in her head.
And Jackson’s small growth spurt seemed like a sign he was following in her massive footsteps. That he would become just like Lorelai.
“Calm down, baby…” Lorelai said softly, hoping he’d listen. Jackson glanced at her massive face, but his eyes drifted back to his arm. “AHHH!!!” He let out another yelp, bursting into tears. “Mama goes through this too, okay?” She blurted out.
Jackson screamed through the pain, yet his eyes found her again.
“When Mama’s emotions get out of control, she grows. But if she calms down, the growing stops.” Lorelai hesitated before saying another word. I- I can’t even shrink back down… but what about him?
“Can you breathe in deeply… for Mama?”
Jackson croaked, his throat aching from shouts.
He wanted to make his mother proud, but she seemed worried. So he took a big, deep breath- which made him look like a pufferfish. “There ya go.” Lorelai nodded, showing her approval.
The longer Jackson held his breath, the slower his arm seemed to grow. Lorelai noticed this, and a wave of relief washed over her. “Okay, let it all out.” She told him, and Jackson blew out the air dramatically. A tired expression drooped over his face as his arm retracted.
The air drifted from Lorelai’s lungs.
It's working…
“Alright, let’s do another deep breath.”
A few breaths later, Jackson’s arm had shrunken back to normal. He didn’t even notice until she told him. “Well, would you look at that?” She pointed to his arm. Jackson followed her finger, and his eyes grew wide. “It’s small again!” He gasped, holding it with his hand.
“Are you alright?” Lorelai asked, regardless of his arm’s current size. “Does it hurt?”
Jackson thought to himself for a moment. “A bit…” He muttered before saying something else. “Does this mean I can get big like you now?” His eyes glittered.
Now it was Lorelai’s turn to go silent.
“M-Mama?”
She quietly raised Jackson up to her face, planting a gentle kiss on his head. She held him to her lips a little longer than usual.
“You grow up too fast, Jackson.” She shuddered. “Just stay my little boy forever, would you?”
