Ludum Dare 40!
Hey everyone!
We’re participating in Ludum Dare 40 and we thought we’d ask if anyone else is also participating.
The theme was a little tough to figure out (it’s too straight-forward, so doing something that’s outside the box with it took a lot of brainstorming), but the game we’re making is moving along steadily!
We can’t quite share what our game is yet, but we can definitely show what it’s looking like so far!
(Early screenshot, no proper textures or post-processing yet)
We’re making it look like a Nintendo 64 game! While we don’t have any real textures yet (just using placeholders), we do have the jittery geometry, the N64-style controls (you have to press buttons to rotate the camera by 90º clockwise or counter-clockwise), and a 4:3 screen resolution!
We’ll share more as we get closer to something that looks halfway decent :)
Here are the sketches, screenshots, and gifs of 3D model that were used in our latest article! Check it out!
You should totally support us on Patreon too! (Pretty please?)
In this first article, we wanted to share the creative process we went through when creating Reynald, our eager archeologist!
Hey there! We're proud to share our very first article with you! Articles are similar to development logs, except we focus on a single aspect of our development process. Whether it be modelling something, dissecting a specific feature, or detailing what we learned from specific mistakes we've made. They might be educational for some or sometimes they might just be a nice inside look at how we do things! Either way, we will be posting one at the start of every month and we truly hope you enjoy reading them!
Our very first article is specifically about how we designed and created Reynald, our game's main character. We share some sketches, some obstacles we had to overcome, gifs, and explain why we made certain decisions!

Time for Throwback Thursday!
Here’s an old iteration of the puzzle stage UI! We were going for a “notes on a table” sort of feel at the time, although we’ve since changed the UI’s overall theme and design drastically.

Redesigning the Save Slot Selection Menu!
Here’s how the save slot selection menu looked like with the old version of the UI.
Since then, we’ve changed the UI to give it a sleeker and more consistent look, and because of this, we had to rework the save slot selection menu.
Here’s our first attempt at redesigning the slots to fit the new look of the UI. It was like that for a while until we designed Reynald’s custom UI typeface. While implementing the new typeface, we realized that it still didn’t feel quite right. So we reworked it again!
Here’s the almost final look! It was a little hard to tell the slots apart and the selection cursor was too subtle, so we kept going.
This solved the previous issues, but at that point we felt like it was a bit much. So we tried a different option.
This alternative made it nice and clear, and it matched much better with the new look and typeface, but it was definitely still too strong. Maybe yellow wasn’t the ideal colour choice?
And there we go! We switched the yellow to brown to keep the consistent duotone look of the UI and now it works! Hopefully we’ll stick to this one for a while before deciding to rework it again!
You can also find this post on Patreon, imgur, and the TIGSource forums!
Until a few weeks ago, we were constantly changing and updating the UI while developing Reynald's Expedition.
But then, after designing a custom typeface for the game, we finally settled on a final look for the UI! Since then, we've been slowly going through the game's UI and redesigning all the elements, menus, and windows/panels to match the final look.
We thought it would be nice to document the redesign process of one of those elements, so here's a breakdown of how we reworked the save slot selection menu in Reynald's Expedition!
