“Caleb?” began Jester tentatively. “Do you have any other stories like that?” She was still clutching her copy of Der Katzenprinz to her chest, the filigree on the cover catching the light in the room.

“I know of a few,” said Caleb, stroking his chin. “There is the other book of fairy tales I left in your room, also.”

“Which is also in Zemnian,” she pointed out, pouting.

“Ah. Right.” Caleb pondered this for a moment. “Hm. You could–”

“I could come back for more stories?” said Jester, a little too quickly.

Caleb raised an eyebrow. “Or lessons in Zemnian, yes. But I would be happy to read you more stories if you’d like that.”

“I would. I’d really like that, Caleb.” Jester beamed, and Caleb felt his heart skip a beat.

“Well, we should pick a time to do this again, if that’s the case.”

She looked at him expectantly. “Is… is tomorrow too soon?”

“Not at all. Tomorrow, then,” said Caleb, “it’s a date. I mean– not like a date, but an agreed-upon future time–”

“It’s a date,” replied Jester, winking. And she skipped out of the room, her pink dress swaying from side to side as she left.

As soon as she was out of sight, Caleb picked up his copy of Die Waldhexe und andere Zemnische Volksmärchen and began thumbing through the pages. He would have to brush up on his fairy tales. And perhaps it was best he start with something a little lighter than Die Waldhexe.

They were finishing dinner when Jester said, apropos of nothing, "Caleb, will you show me your other rooms on the eighth floor? If it's okay with you, that is?"

Caleb slowed, staring down at his plate as he chewed.

Jester had been in Rexxentrum for a month now after returning to land for a change of pace—literally. Instead of calling for a quick teleportation, she had alternated between traveling on foot and flying. Caleb discovered this after a blue-feathered giant eagle had landed on the roof of his small townhouse and frightened the neighbors. More people knocked on his door in one day than had the entire past month.

In between her visits to Beau and Yasha and meandering all about the city limits for some fun (a temple to the Raven Queen was vandalized a week in), Jester came to see Caleb, too. It had been a bit since they'd seen each other in person. He was glad for the company. She retained every ounce of the brilliance and humor he remembered.

The charm, too. Caleb had been both vaguely frustrated and resigned to find that yes, still, he was in love with her. By this point he doubted he ever wouldn't be.

Everything about his love for her was so different. His type was intelligence, competence, and sharp edges that admittedly attracted him by how easily he might be cut by them. Astrid and Eadwulf suited him precisely. Essek, too, fit the mold, even as he proved Caleb wrong in every way that mattered.

Of course, Jester rather was his type as well—blindingly intelligent, ingenuitive, and accomplished. So really, he ought to have expected something more.

Her voice had been cautious and tense, as if she feared to find a sore spot. He swallowed his food. "Tonight?"

"If that's okay."

Caleb took a deep breath. He wanted to touch her. Hold her cheek in his hand. She surprised him, yes, but he had known her for long enough—Jester's love would never cease to surprise him.

He raised his gaze and smiled to ease the apology from her frown. "It is okay. Let's clean up and I can set up the tower."

“I’m only going to say this once, Caleb: if you ever do something as stupid as whatever happened back there again, you don’t need to worry about whoever’s attacking you because I will kill you myself.” Jester didn’t think she’d ever been more cross with her boyfriend than at this moment. “Then I will spend the 300 gold diamond to bring you back to life, and then I will kill you again.”

After a particularly stressful battle, Jester sets Caleb straight on some things.
