This was bar none the strangest assignment Amber had ever been sent on. Yes, Rangers were intended to be able to travel. Yes, that included internationally. Still, they were usually prepped on where the Union sent them. Part of passing into a higher rank required learning about the different regions of the world.

No one—no one—had told her there was an island stuck in the sengoku period. She was friends with people at rank ten! They would have told her about the sengoku island!

According to the files passed on along with her new assignment, one of the kingdoms (yes, kingdoms) was in need of help rebuilding. The bigwig in charge of the region had visited one of the places Amber knew about, and during that visit had learned of the Ranger Union.

Poké Balls hadn’t been introduced there yet, because they were stuck in the sengoku period, and the Capture Stylers appeared to have made a good impression.

Naturally. They were the best.

     So here she stood, nervously smoothing the folds from her nicest kimono. She’d arranged to meet with the representative in the garden outside of the new palace - the building itself was still half-finished, but she hoped that whoever was coming would at least see and understand that they were trying to do better.

     Spotting the woman approaching, Ruolan waved to her, her free hand resting on Tsubaki’s neck. The Scolipede huffed and twined herself around her partner, giving the stranger a sidelong glance.

As though she cared what they wished.

Humans who shunned her children. Who forced her loves so far into hiding she had been forced to create a new home so they might live in peace. All the humans deserved was an end.

Unfortunately, Lunala had less control over that than the humans themselves. So she was forced to listen when her home shone bright in the sky. To the pitiful whinings of her lessers.

Sometimes, though, sometimes those prayers spoke of revenge. Of grief and hatred that turned one human on another. On every other human. Those tempted her to answer. A word here, a caress there. Of course she understood. None in the world understood the sting of betrayal better.

Each nudge and whisper a hook in the poor fool that drew her attention.

“Darling,” she crooned, her voice and touch dripping sweet sympathy. “Tell me what they did to you.”

    Though the fires across the capital had been extinguished, the ruins of the warlord’s palace still smouldered with heat. As she wandered the skeleton of the once-grand building, every footstep sparked with a cloud of embers.

    How unfair it seemed, that Hisahide wasn’t here to face what he’d done. Half the kingdom burned down by his hand, his newborn daughter left behind...and Ruolan, less qualified than anyone, left to pick up the pieces. As if this was all her fault.

    She’d meant to stay just long enough to scrape together whatever she could find in the ruins. But as everything weighed heavier and heavier on her, she felt herself giving in; embers gnawed her skin as she knelt, head in hands, and began to weep.

   “Wh...what?”

    The voice was just as gentle as the hand that touched her head, and Ruolan’s sobbing halted. Whoever this woman was, she didn’t look like anything human - light seemed to radiate from her, even in the depths of the late evening.
