(I LOVE AN OVERHEARING TROPE!)
You peered into the corridor looking around for some sign of life.
“I don’t know man. It’s suffocating.”
If you had dog ears, they would have perked up hearing Jason’s voice. You slowly trailed down the hall quietly as possible.
“No, you don’t mean that. Come on, she just cares.” Dicks voice chimed. “Yeah, but it gets to a point where it’s just annoying. I don’t need a babysitter.”
Your eyes slowly squinted to a lit room two doors down from where you were. ‘who is he talking about?’
“She’s not babysitting you!”
“You’re not understanding. I go over and she treats me like some fucked up kid she took off the street-“
You face scrunches in confusion.
“It’s lecture after lecture of being more careful and stop being ‘so reckless’. She doesn’t understand what I do and how I do it…and I’m not going to change my ways when I’ve been fine before her and I’ll be fine after.”
You stop in place.
“You don’t mean that…?” Dick questions quietly.
“I don’t know….. Maybe I’m stressed?”
The floors could cave in now and you’d be fine with that. You slowly move backwards, tuning out to their voices.
‘That’s how he feels, huh?’
That was two days ago.…and it was lingering bad.
You stopped texting all together. Phone lighting up every few hours but never answered.
“Asshole.” You scoffed every time his name popped up in a notification box.
You looked out the window, clouds circling the city, getting ready to pour rain and flood the streets of Gotham. You could only sigh and lean back into your couch.
“Could be worse, I suppose.” You mumble quietly and watch as droplets hit the window.
Sleep sets in, you didn’t even realize it until being woken by banging on your front door. “Who is it!?” You yelled trying to adjust your eyes to the darkish room. Thunder boomed outside making you wide awake again.
“Open the damn door!”
The voice was unmistakably Jason’s. Which raised your blood pressure drastically.
Your body rolls off the couch and drags over to the door, opening it the slightest bit. “What do you want?” You ask annoyed as you hard flicks the light switch on.
“Let me in.” He was soaked, eyes red, hair sticking to his forehead and a small puddle was forming under his feet.
You almost shut the door but his hand was already in the door frame. “…fine...”
He hurried in, stripping off his wet jacket and shirt, while headed towards the bathroom before he made an even bigger mess of water.
The came out somewhat dry, only wearing pajama pants he had left at your apartment a while back. His body flexed at the cold once he stepped out of the bathroom.
You pulled your legs up and backed yourself into the corner of the couch. “Do you need a shirt?”
“I’m good.” He walked over and sat on the other side, “haven’t heard from you in a while. What have you been doing?”
“Minding my business.” You said flatly. Jason’s head turns toward you in an instant.
“…are you okay?”
“Fine. You?”
“….fine…” he trails off still watching your every move. “I’ve been calling you.”
“….yeah.”
“Yeah? What do you mean yeah? What’s wrong with you?” He asked taken aback.
“Nothing is wrong with me. Is there something wrong with you?” You scoffed looking away from him.
“Stop doing that!”
“Stop doing what?!”
“Acting like that! If I did something wrong just say it! I’m not playing these games with you!” He turns his body towards you, gripping the couch cushion to hold himself up as he leaned forward.
“No, you tell me what I’m doing wrong! Since you got so much to say!” You finally snapped.
“I don’t understand what you’re trying to get at. Just tell me what’s wrong so I can fix it.”
“There’s nothing to fix. Everything’s fine.”
“Bullshit.” He huffs leaning back into the couch.
“I just don’t want to ‘suffocate’ you by caring about what you do at night. It’s none of my business, just like it’s none of YOUR business what I do.”
Thunder vibrates the window as Jason comes to a realization. “Dick said something to you.”
“No. I heard you with my own two ears, asshole! If that’s how you been feeling, why do you even come over here to begin with!”
“I didn’t mean anything by what I said! It’s just sometimes, you’re overbearing!”
“Overbearing? Ok, I simply won’t be then! I could give less of a fuck about what you do anymore. It’s not like I’m gonna be around much longer, as you’ve said!” You throw your legs down and begin getting up to get more space away from him.
“What are you taking about?” He follows you with no hesitation.
“‘I was fine before her and I’ll be fine after?’ Am I disposable to you? Huh? If that’s really how you feel then just go. I’m not going to be around someone who does not want me.”
“I didn’t mean it like that-“
“No, don’t change your words now. You did mean it. I know you Jason, you meant every word you said.” You felt the overwhelming feeling of hurt swallowing you whole, “just…please leave. You made it clear enough that I am not treating you how you want to be treated. There’s no more reason to continue what ever ‘this’ is.”
Another loud boom passes, filling the apartment. Jason runs both his hands through his hair and sighs loudly.
“I’m not leaving. I care about you. When you didn’t answer the phone the first time I was already worried sick something happened to you. I waited and waited for some clue as to what you were doing until I couldn’t take it anymore. I’m so fucking sorry I blamed everything on you. It was never you. It’s me and my stupid brain. I am reckless, everyone knows that. When you’ve pointed it out it feels like I’m disappointing you. I do want to be better. It’s just hard. I don’t want to keep disappointing you.” Words waterfall out of his mouth as he glares at the floor. He grabs your hips and pulls you to stand in front of him as he sits back on the arm rest of the couch. “I’m sorry…..for being a complete asshole.”
You stayed quiet as Jason watched your facial expressions. The lights flicker in the apartment as the rain continues to pelt the window. You turn back to see another flair of lightning shoot across the sky followed by another loud burst of thunder. “You just don’t want to go back out there…” you mumble jokingly.
“That’s also true.” He follows you gaze to the window, playing with the hem of your shirt, “it’s pretty bad out there…”
The sound of the rain muddles your brain as you find words to express yourself.
“….I don’t know what to do from here….i don’t want to make you feel as if I’m treating you like a kid. I worry about you every night... I’m terrified of you not coming back to me. I don’t mean to be overbearing. I just…..don’t want there to be a chance where I lose you.” You spoke quietly still watching the rain.
Jason’s heart sped up. “Fuck.” He blurts out, making your attention snap over to him. His arms wrap around your hips as he buries his head into your lower stomach. “I’m sorry for being an inconsiderate asshole. Fuck.”
“What? What’s wrong?”
“I…..I’m processing.”
“Processing? Processing what?” You questioned a bit amused at his reaction.
“That I love you.”
Your brain comes to a halt. Jason’s arms tighten around you.
.“….Jason? What did you say?” You begin shaking his shoulders, wanting to hear him say it again. He looks up with a pathetic expression. “You heard me…”
“I did.” You run a hand through his hair, “you should be like this more often.” You teased making him groan.
“You’re cruel.”
“I love you too.” You laugh feeling him tense up again.
