Summary: You fell head over heels for Ryland Grace when you were twelve and he was thirteen. You let him break your heart when you were eighteen and he was nineteen (and an asshole). Now you're thirty-four. Now you're single, and determined to stay that way. Now you know better than to expect anything more from him than friendship, and advice, and maybe some sperm while you're at it?
(or: the one where you are done with dating, and want to have a kid, and ask your best and oldest friend if he'd be willing to contribute. With or without a turkey baster.)

A/N: 18+ only! this is part 1 of a 2-3 part series. it can be read as a standalone, but if you want a happy ending you'll have to wait. that said, it's very much romcom vibes - not at ALL like my other Ryland piece - and they WILL kiss eventually. Special s/o to @collarado for letting me holler in their dms and also suggesting moments like 'considerate ryland offering to finger you' and 'ryland eats it from the back' (everyone cheers)
âIâm having a baby," you say without preamble, dropping your purse on the table at the same time you drop into your chair.
Olesya looks up from her menu like youâve just announced you bought a one-way ticket to Mars.
"Not with Mark," she says. "No, no, you cannot be having a baby with Mark. I leave you alone for a week and you decide to have baby withââ
"No.â You shake your head emphatically, as though this will somehow erase the way you conducted yourself over the course of your most recent breakup (during which Olya was on the receiving end of many a late-night drunken wallowing session), and try to free yourself from the six inches of cushion youâve sunken into. Itâs at least better than the reclaimed-driftwood-hightop-stools at the last trendy brunch popup she chose. âNot Mark. Not anyone. Iâm done with men."
"Thank God. You have terrible taste. Better to give up entirely." You let this slide, though it feels a bit rich coming from someone who has been going steady with her direct supervisor for the past six months (after six months of a generationally messy on-again-off-again thing). âIf you schedule appointment for Tuesday or Friday, I can drive.â
âAppointment?â
âYeah, appointment. Baby appointment. This week, next week. Unless you just want to try DIY first?â She holds up her mimosa flute, hands it to you, pours a little, takes it back, takes a sip, considers. âMm. Not so strong.â She hands it back to you and fills it so much that a little hill of liquid rises above the lip. âDouble dose. For safety."
You bring your mouth to the glass and de-meniscus the mimosaâwhich, for the record, is very strongâand shake your head. âIâm not pregnant right now,â you clarify. âIâve decided Iâm going to get pregnant. On purpose.â
She squints at you. âWhy would you do that.â
âI want a baby.â You hate adages about biological clocks. That said, yours is currently ticking like a bomb. âAnd I think Iâve reached the age where all of the men available in the dating pool areâŚâ You shudder.
You have dated and dated and dated, and at thirty-four youâre pretty certain youâve seen all the kinds of men the Bay Area has to offer. Divorced men. Unemployed men. Silicon Valley wunderkinds who look at you and your non-STEM degree (and your very successful private law practice, thank you very much) with poorly veiled disdain. Tall, plain men with an abundance of options and a deficit of personality; short, beautiful men who compensate for the personality with a lack of empathy that borders on psychopathy. You have dated nice men and cruel men and boring men and self-interested men, and, at the end of the day, not one none of them ever had enough redeeming qualities to make you want to stay.
âI just canât do it anymore,â you settle for saying. âThereâs only so many times I can get ready for a first date, redoing my lipstick a dozen times, listening to the same Olivia Dean song on loop, trying to talk myself out of flaking last-minute because I know the sex is going to be bad. Iâm too much of an adult to be acting like that.â
âNo.â She shakes her head emphatically, pouring you both more booze. You have yet to even look at a menu, and somehow the pitcher is half empty. âYou go about this all wrong. You go on dates from internet, from apps. App is for fling, fun, hookups. You refuse to try and date friend, date coworker, date neighborââ
You shake your head. You have tried dating all of the above. You have weathered several rock bottoms in the aftermath. âIâm not trying to blow up my life, thanks. I like my life as is.â
âYes, I know,â she says, rolling her eyes. âYou like your life, you love your life. This is why you want to add a tiny person with no sleep schedule who spends all your money.â
âI already have you for that.â She blows you a kiss, unrepentant. âBut yes, a baby would be nice, too. Iâve thought about it. Iâve saved up. I bought, like, three bottles of prenatal gummies. Now I just need to, you know. Get some sperm.â
âEasy. Sperm is cheap.â She claps. âTonight! I set you up with someone at trivia. Bang, boom, baby in nine months.â
âNo, no, because weâve been over this: trivia is a social circle I am a part of. Half the people at trivia are people I knew in high school, and the other half are people Iâve worked withââ You hold up a hand before she can protest. ââand I know, you are a beautiful anomaly, you and Eva, but most people arenât so lucky. You know the rules.â
She tips her head back and groans. âYou and your rules.â When she brings her head back up, itâs with a pout. âYou ignore so many of my perfect, beautiful matches for your stupid rules.â
âMy rules exist for a reason.â
âYes, to keep you unhappy.â She shakes her head, waving a hand. âFine, whateverâI match you with someone from my work.â
âIâve worked with people from your work,â you remind her. The entire reason you met was because her engineering firm (because Eva specifically) hired you during a patent dispute. They ask you back from time to time.
âSomeone new! Maybe he stays in town, maybe not. Low risk!â
âToo much risk.â
She scowls. âAll risk is too much for you. Life is all risk. Baby is all risk. Anya is risking her life every five seconds.â She looks off in the distanceâthinking about her niece, presumably, who is two years old and getting cuter by the day. She shrugs. âYou know, maybe baby will be good for you.â
âThanks.â
âYouâll come to trivia. New guy will be there, I will be thereââ
âGreat. Want to give me some sperm?â
âHa. Eva will be there. Grace will be there.â
Something in your head pauses. âRyland's back?"
She points at you. âAh!â
âWhat? No.â Your attempt at a casual laugh sounds unconvincing even to your ears. âNo, thatâs not what I meant. I just thought he wasnâtâOlya, thatâs not what I meant, I thought he was still in L.A.ââ
âHe is back and he will be there and he will make puppy dog eyes at you like always, and you will ignore him because you are cruel.â
âI'm notâhe won'tââ You let out an exhale. Then you begin to tick off items on your fingers. âOne, Ryland has a very nice girlfriend. And two, he does not make puppy dog eyes at me. Thatâs just how he looks.â
âYes, how he looks at you.â
âBecause heâs never stopped seeing me as his best friendâs annoying little sister,â you correct her. âItâs nostalgia. I told you, he took me to prom and heâI mean. You know, nothing happened.â
âBecause he was stupid teenager. Now he is a stupid man, and you are a stupid womanâperfect. Iâm a genius.â
âDid you miss the part where he has a girlfriend? I thought you liked Linda.â
âEva likes Linda, and this is only because they know the same boring history facts.â
You snort in spite of yourself. âThatâs terrible.â
âItâs true! And besides, you are just asking for sperm for baby, yes? Such an old friend, such a tiny favor, Linda canât be mad aboutââ
âOlesya.â You give her a stern look. She looks back with the practiced innocence of a cat whoâs already swallowed the canary and hasn't yet noticed the feathers stuck in its teeth. âNo.â
âNo trivia or no baby?â
âYes trivia, no to whatever you're plotting.â
She sighs. âFine, no to Grace. He can make puppy dog eyes at you across the bar while you talk to new work friendââ
âNo setting me up with anyone.â You snap your menu shut, and flag a waiter. You can't continue this conversationâor, ideally, escape this conversationâwithout copious amounts of French toast. âItâs the twenty-first century, you know? They have websites now. Catalogs. Safe, discreet, easy. Like you said, sperm is cheap.â
-
As it turns out, sperm is really fucking expensive.
You scowl at the laptop, willing it to give you a different answer, but the calculations come out the same the fiftieth time as they did the fifth. A couple thousand dollars, minimum, and thatâs if you use an anonymous donor. For someone vettedâGod forbid, someone you might get to talk toâit can go up into five figures.
You put down your notebook and plant your head in your hands.Â
You are, by many metrics, a successful woman. You live in a one-bedroom apartment, in San Francisco, alone. Many of your clients see you over video, so you can more or less set your day. You have no student loans, and enough savings set aside to pay for childcare, doctorâs visits, diapers, a nice stroller.
You do not have enough to cover all of that and a round of in vitro fertilization that might not even work.
You lift your head up. Youâve been buried in your laptop for so long, the sun has set, leaving the apartment almost entirely dark, save for your screen and for the kitchen clock blaring bright green above the stove. Itâs seven forty-five.
Trivia starts at eight.
You sigh. You stand up and grab your keys.
-
Trivia night is the same as always, which is to say itâs at the same dingy bar, with the same sticky black floors and pockmarked dart boards and outdated drink menu as always. Youâre pretty sure the bartenders have worked here since you were too young to set foot inside.
âYou came!â Olya crows, slinging an arm around your neck as soon as the door shuts behind you. âHere. Two for one.â
You gently bat away the bottle she waves in your face. "I drove.â
âFine.â She winds her arm through yours, walking you across the bar. âIâm setting up carpool home. You and Eva can be boring designated drivers together.â
âHa, ha.â Your eyes scan the room. You tell yourself this isnât on purpose, which is probably true, itâs normal to take stock of a roomâbut youâve taken stock of this particular room almost weekly for the past year and a half, which means there really isnât anything in it you havenât seen, until your eyes reach a table in the back and see Eva Stratt talking toâ
âSee?" Olesya pinches your waist. You jump. "I told you he is back."
âOw."
âCome talk. Weâre running late, nothing to do but drink and talk, and you donât even drink tonight.â She bumps her hip into yours. âMaybe not for nine months, if everything goes good, eh?â
You hip check her back. âYeah. Maybe. Itâs not looking tooâ"
You hear your name, and you look up.
The voice is familiar. The face is familiar, if slightly more tanned from a few weeks out of the San Francisco fog; the hair a little longer. The lopsided glasses, thoughâand the bright blue eyes behind them, and the mouth and the smile and the dimples that go with itâare the same as they were twenty years ago.Â
âRyland.â Your face is warm, which is definitely because you just walked through a crowded bar, and for no other reason. âHi.â
âHey.â He stands up, so quickly he almost knocks over his bottle on the table, and catches you in a warm, friendly hug that you survive mainly on autopilot.
âHi. Hi.â The hug ends, and you wave at Eva, who waves back, and then look back up at him. âHi. I, um, I thought you were still in L.A.â
âYeah. Yeah. Colt got a last-minute gig this weekend, so. I came back a week early. But it was good. Heâs good. Said to send you his best.â
Colt has always been sweet. Of the two, youâd have thought heâd be the one to ask you on a family-friend-pity-date to prom. Ryland was always stuck in his books, his scholarships, too convinced of his own genius to see you as anything but silly and young, and the arrogance only got worse with each subsequent visit home from college. It was almost jarring to meet him again, two years ago, when he moved back home to teach. Somehow the intervening decade had rendered him easygoing, and softer-spoken, and humble.
Mostly humble. Trivia night almost invariably makes teenage Ryland rear his ugly head.
âThatâs good," you say. "I remember the accident wasâŚyou know. Good to hear heâs getting back into things.â
âYeah.â His eyes dart from you, to Olya and Eva behind you, to the bar, then back to you. âDo you want a drink? Iâm going for a refill.â
âOh, Iâm notââ
âVirgin drink for her,â Olesya shouts from where she is now seated, which is more on Evaâs lap than in the booth. You force your face to remain neutral, as opposed to the expression it wants to arrange itself into at hearing the word virgin used in reference to you around the man who notably did not take your actual virginity at your high school prom. âReal drink for me. Double vodka Redbull. And espresso for Eva.â
âRight. Just espresso, no martini,â he says, with an automaticness that suggests heâs had the same thing repeated at him ad nauseam for the better part of an hour. âOkay. You?â
You blink up at him. Then at Olya. She mouths GO at you, accompanied with some rather violent hand gestures, and just as Ryland is about to turn and see this you grab his arm and tug. âIâll come with you!â
When you get to the bar, you glance back to furrow your brows at Olesya, who has switched to double thumbs up and a shit-eating grin.
You roll your eyes at her, then turn to Ryland, whoâs somehow managed to flag down the bartender and order three drinks in the span of fifteen seconds. âI ordered for you.â
âThanks.â You get comfortable on a barstool, and look up at him. âSo. Youâve been backââ
âA few hours.â
âA few hours? And you still rallied for Saturday night dive bar trivia? We should be honored.â
âCouldn't miss it. Everyone in L.A. kept trying to talk to me about crystals and vibes and, like artisan surfboards. I need this.â
You widen your eyes. âOh, you didnât hear? Itâs artisan surfboard night."
He plays along. "Really?" He gets an elbow up on the bar, resting his cheek on one hand.
âAn expert, Iâm sure.â Your eyes map out the geography of his face. You have seen dozens and dozens of versions of this face over the past thirty years or so. This version has a few new freckles, dusted across his nose. You know, from long summers spent hiking and cycling and calling first dibs on the rec center diving board, that those freckles sometimes reach down to his shoulders, his arms, his back. "Was the sun gorgeous?"
âMaybe." His eyes don't leave yours. You wonder if he's running the same mental math, the same diagrams, the same map. It's a rare thing, to know someone your whole life. "You know Iâm a sucker for the fog.â
âUgh. L.A. is wasted on you." Once you're finished scrunching up your nose in disapproval, you sigh. "I bet it was gorgeous. I should move there.â
âYou shouldn't.â
âWhy? Because Iâm the last person in San Francisco who remembers your landline number by heart?" Drinks arrive, and he slides one over to you. Itâs red, and fizzy, and has not one but two maraschino cherries. You point at it. âIs this a fucking Shirley Temple?â
âHey," he says, sounding unbelievably sincere in his disappointment for a man who, between the ages of eight and eighteen, taught you every four-letter word you know. "Language.â
âIâm not one of your students, and did you order me a fucking Shirley Temple?â
He shrugs, and takes a sip of his beer. âItâs the most virgin drink there is.â
You squint at him. Then you reach forward and press a palm to his cheekânot slapping him, just smushing his face away from you (and probably smudging his glasses in the process). âI should throw this at you.â
âHey, hey!â He catches your wrist. Your pulse does something funny. Your breath is not where its supposed to be. He doesnât notice. âThat's the thanks I get? You used to love those.â
âWhen I was twelve," you say, tugging your wrist away, "at my momâs third wedding.â You don't remember a lot from middle school, but you remember that wedding.
He danced with you at that wedding.
The Cotton-Eye Joe, or something stupid like thatâbut then also a slow dance. Half of one. Heâd seen you and Colt dancing and felt left out. Youâd let him lead you across the floor, in your sparkly teal junior bridesmaid dress and patent leather shoes, and that might be the first time you remember having that twinkle in your chest, that glow.Â
Thinking, so this is what a crush feels like.
He clinks his bottle against your glass, shaking you out of the memory. âGood news, Iâm pretty sure they havenât changed the recipe since then.â He lifts his bottle. "To things that last."
Something tugs at your chest. âTo things that last.â
You put the drink down once youâre positive that your face isnât doing anything unhinged, which is to say after youâve downed at least a quarter of it. When you look up again, you find heâs already looking at you, with an expression you are momentarily unable to place. It's not expectant, really. Not teasing. Just warm. Watching.
If he were aiming it at anyone else, you might even label it puppy dog eyes.
But it's Ryland, and you know Ryland. You know old Ryland, and you know this Ryland, and you know that this particular look on both of them is one of the kindest possible condescension. It means I met this girl when she was seven and I was eight, and I will see her that way forever. It means friendly, and nostalgic. It means nothing at all like what you wish it did.
You clear your throat and raise your glass. "Looks like twelve-year-old me had good taste after all.â
-
Trivia night ends the same as always, which is to say that Olya gets drunk enough to start heckling the opposition, Ryland nearly knocks over several chairs in his fervor to win, and Eva quietly leads the team to a sweeping victory. By the end of the night, the chaos has settled into a quiet hum, the room buzzing and buzzed off success and adrenaline and cheap beer.
You have not had anything to drink at all, and even you feel a little bit dizzy with the night. This could plausibly be explained by the rush of winning forty consecutive weeks in a row. It could be plausibly explained by any number of things aside from the actual cause.
You are trying very hard not to name the actual cause.
You do allow yourself to name several things around it, like: a high-five that turned into a hand squeeze that you felt long after heâd let your hand go; a smile, long and lopsided and devastating, every time a category came up he knew youâd be good at; a second Shirley Temple, ordered for you and handed to you seconds before he stood up to answer a question (at Trivia Night. Where all the questions are written down on paper. He is hopeless, and you are worse for liking it).
You are mid-naming-things-around-it, and midway to the door, when Olesya calls your name. You turn with a sigh. âYes,â you say, with no small amount of reluctance, âI can help carpool.â
âPerfect. Every other car, full, you just need to take one person.â She calls back over her shoulder. âGrace!â She regards to you with a twinkle in her eye that you are all too familiar with.Â
Your eyes widen. âOlya,â you hiss. âOlya, noââ
âAll the other cars are full,â she says, pouting. âAnd he is on the way to your house.â
âThatâs fine, I have no actual objections to that, Iâm just objecting to the implication.â
âWhat implication?â she asks, and you donât have time to answer because he is here and he has on a yellow raincoat and a beanie, and you hate how hard you are smiling.
âHey,â he says. His cheeks are still a little pink from the thrill of beating another team at Who Knows The Most Useless Niche Fun Facts. His hair is a disaster. He looks between you and Olesya. âEverythingâs good?â
âI found you a ride!â Olesya beams.
âOh, I can bike home.â
âYou biked?â you ask.
âItâs raining,â she points out.
âI have a raincoat.â
âHe has a raincoat,â you say to Olya.
âIâm too drunk for this,â she says, before kissing you on the cheek and absconding with Eva.
You look at Ryland. He looks at you. âI really can bike home.â
The thunder is so sudden and so loud, you practically jump into him. When itâs passed, your shoulder is against his chest, and his arm is around your waist, and you blink and you breathe and then you, both of you, take a step back.
You clear your throat and pull your car keys out of your pocket. âSame address?â
-
You shouldnât have been worried. Driving with Ryland is never bad, even if you havenât done it in a few months. You amicably bicker about the music for a bit, and then talk about Colt (healed from his accident, back out on his first stunt gig since, apparently plotting to win back The One Who Got Away), and about your brother (teaching law on the East Coast), and your mother (flirting with golf caddies in Orlando), and about Los Angeles. You talk about your job, and his. Students. Books. Friends. The weather. And when the conversation fizzles out, itâs into a comfortable silence.Â
The comfortable silence lasts approximately a minute and a half before he says, âI have to confess something.â
Your brows lift. âOh?â
âThis isnât just a carpool. Itâs a carpool with ulterior motives.â
âThrilling start. Go on.â
"Olesya asked me to talk you out of having a baby?â
You slam on the break. Youâre at a stop sign, but still. âOh my God.â
He has his hand up on the ceiling, looking at you withâalarm, maybe? Itâs difficult to tell, because the car is dark, and also because youâre trying very hard only to look at him through your peripheral vision. On account of the fact that youâre driving. Obviously. âShe was pretty drunk, so, uh, maybe I misheard?â He pauses. You say nothing. He rushes to continue, âI said it was an overstep."
"Yeah."
"But she insisted."
"Okay."
"So if she asks, can you please tell her I tried? Before she sics her scary girlfriend on me?â
You snort out a laugh at that. âYep,â you say. Then, quietly, through your teeth, âI will definitely tell her.â
Two more stop signs pass in silence before he speaks again. âCongratulations, by the way." You look over just long enough to make eye contact, or at least make contact with the glimmer of streetlight against his glasses. His face is unreadable behind them. "About the baby. Or condolences if itâs, uh, if itâs complicated.â
You hum. âIt's complicated.â
âAh.â
You realize how that sounds, and rush to continue, âNot complicated like that. Thereâs no father.â Does that sound worse? You think that sounds worse. âIâm not currently pregnant. Actually, Iâve sworn off men.â
He laughs. Itâs brief. âEntirely?â
âYes. Thank God.â
âOh.â
âExcept it turns out I do need one last thing from them in order to even do the single mom thing.â You roll to a stop in front of a red light, and lift one hand off the wheel to run back through your hair. âWho knew sperm could be so expensive?â
"Makes sense. They pay a lot."
You give him a look, half-delighted, half-inquisitive, and he sighs. "Ryland,â you say.
âI thought about it.â
âRyland.â
In grad school. For the money."
"Ryland Grace."
"I didn't go through with it!â he protests. âI chickened out. I didn't like the idea of having a kid out there somewhere that I didn't know anything about. No way of knowing the parents, if they were any good or not."
"I get that." You purse your lips. "I also don't really love the idea of combining my DNA with a stranger's. I think if I was adopting it would be different, because that's a whole, real person who exists already. But that's expensive. And then sperm is also expensive, and IVF, and just, you know. Everything. I'm starting to think it'd be easier to just walk up to someone in real life and ask if they'd be willing to contribute."
âContribute?â He snickers. âWhat, with a turkey baster?"
"At this point? Sure.â You flip the blinker, check your blind spot. âIt's either that or the old fashioned way. You know, traditional."
He chokes.
You sightlessly grab your water bottle out of the cup holder, and pass it to him. He takes a long, long swig. The next time you pass by a street lamp, his face reappears redder than usual. "Right,â he says, then clears his throat. âRight, no, yeah, turkey baster's soâimpersonal. Traditional's probably better. I'm a big fan of tradition."
âWould you have gone through with it, do you think? In grad school. If it was more like that."
"Maybe?â He considers it. âI don't know. I don't know if I was ready conceptually back then, for the idea of a kid. Too immature."
"Yeah," you agree. "You were kind of a dick."
"Hey." You give him just enough eye contact for him to think it over. "Yeah," he admits with a chuckle. "Yeah, I was."
"What about now? At the very mature, entirely un-dick-ish age you are now?â
A pause. âIt would depend on who was asking."
Your eyebrows lift. âReally?â You keep your eyes very much on the road. âAnd how does Linda feel about that?"
âWe broke up."
"Oh. I'm sorry.â
âItâs fine.â
You let the sound of the blinker fill the car for a few seconds before you speak again. âIf you ever need to talk about itâŚ"
"Not much to talk about,â he says. âShe said she felt like I was only ever half-in the relationship. Like I was, uh, 'always looking for something better.'"
"Were you?"
"Yeah. I think so."
You whistle. âOuch."
"It's fine. It was right before I went to L.A., so it gave me some distance. Time to process, figure out what matters to me."
âFigure out what âbetterâ you were looking for?â
He smiles at the next streetlight. It doesnât reach his eyes. âYeah. Exactly.â
Right before he went to L.A. Two months, then, give or takeâright after you ended things with Markâwhich means they were together for three. You dislike that the calculation comes so easily. You dislike having to acknowledge, even to yourself, that this is something you have tracked.
"Gotcha." You try to keep your tone light. "I get it. I had a similarâŚI, uh, went through a breakup around then, too."
"I know.â
Itâs the last thing either of you says for a bit.
Before you know it, youâre pulling in front of his houseâhis childhood house, the one he and Colt inherited. The one he lives in alone, now, since Colt settled in L.A.. It looks the same as it did when you were a kid. Same driveway, same bushes. Same bike out front. Same blue paint (peeling in the back, you assume, because theyâd run out of sealant three-quarters of the way through and never got around to visiting Home Depot for more).
âWell,â he says, âthis is me.â He turns, and youâre expecting a goodbye, maybe an awkward cross-cupholder-hug, but instead he just says, âYou know, the landline number is actually the same.â
â555-7827.â You tip your head forward, resting it on the wheel. âGod, thereâs so much important shit I could be using that brain space for.â
âYou can always call. If you ever need.â He gestures vaguely. âAnything."
"Anything?â You tilt your head. âDangerous offer."
"Yeah, well. It's you.â With that, he unbuckles, and opens the door. âGoodnight.â
âIâgoodnight,â you say, a little flummoxed, and a little flummoxed as to why you feel flummoxed.
He shuts the door. You watch him walk, to be polite, because you watch all of your friends to make sure they get into the door safelyâbut then he pauses halfway up and shouts something. Your name. You lower the window.
âAnything at all,â he calls. âYou just. You just have to ask."
âGreat!â You give him a thumbs up. âThanks! Goodnight!â
He waves, and reaches the door, and heâs gone. You sit and look at the house. Then you sit and look at your hands. Then you shake your head at yourself, and you put the car back into drive, and you pull away.
-
It isnât until several minutes into the drive home that you understand the implication.
This inspires a thorough self-inventory that probably would be better off done in the quiet of your home, rather than half-assed while driving; but alas, you are single-minded. And impatient.
There's the part of you that thinks this man is tall, and brilliant, and funny, and sweet, and has a great head of hair, and all of those sound like pretty good odds to gamble with on your future child.
There's the part of you that has wanted him, for years, for reasons that have nothing to do with wanting a kid.
Finallyâand, though you hate to admit it to yourself, maybe most importantlyâthere's the part of you that hopes that maybe, if you were to sleep with him, just once, the wanting would leave and burn up and be gone, and you'd finally, finally be able to get Ryland Grace out of your system once and for all, the way you've been able to get every other man out of your system. Also, the excuse of the pregnancy might make it so that you could do this without entirely blowing up your friendship, the way you've done so many times before.
You go through this cycle of thoughts several times. You go through it on the drive; as you park; up the stairs, up the elevator, through fumbling with your keys and shutting the door behind you.
Ultimately, you decide to sleep on it. This isnât the kind of thing you rush into. You could be misreading his offer. You could be misreading your own emotional capacity for doing this. You could wake up tomorrow and stumble upon the one sperm donation catalog in the history of humankind that would cost you less than two thousand dollars. You are very sensible and very logical about all of these possibilities, and several others, as you cross your apartment and sit down on the couch and pull your phone out of your bag and dial.Â
He picks up after two rings.
"It's me,â you say, before he even greets you. âI'm asking.â
"You're asking me toâ"
"Help me have a baby. With or without a turkey baster.â
He pauses for five seconds.
Your brain stretches this out to five years, give or take. Long enough that you barrel forward with the rest of the points youâve come up with in response to any questions he might have.
âI know it's a big ask. You can totally say no. But you should know that I would never ask for money or anything, I can draw up a contract, it really is just a question of sperm. I mean, you wouldn't have to be involved at all post, um, post-conception. Unless you wanted to be an uncle, or a godparentâif you wanted to be a godparent, I guess you could duke it out with Olyaâor, well, you can have multiple godparents, right? But also you wouldn't even have to see the baby if you didn't want to, and we wouldn't have to tell anyone, andââ
"I'll do it.â
âReally?â
âYeah." He says it so casually. Like it's easy. No big deal, just a little sperm between friends. "Just letting you know, though, I have a very strict BYOB policy."
You puzzle over that for a half-second before your face splits in a grin. âBring your own baster.â
"Bring your own baster,â he repeats, sounding like heâs smiling just as wide.
"Okay. I'll add it to my records.â
âRecords?â
"Yeah, I have all kinds of lists andâless for you. More for me. You don't really have to do anything, except. Um. Donate.â
âDonate.â
âThat. Oh, and get tested. I did last week, itâs easyââ
âOkay."
"It's not that I don't trust you, or anything, it's just, like, protocolâ"
"That makes sense. I can do that tomorrow.â
âI can pay for it.â
âDonât worry about it. I was due for a test, anyway. Good to go regularly, itâs beenâum. Anyway. Itâll come back clean.â
âGreat. Well. If you go tomorrow, that should be back in a few days, and then. Are you free Friday?â
âFridayâŚâ Thereâs a pause, and some frantic shuffling. Pages being flipped through. âFriday I'm on detention duty, so I get off around four. Three forty five.â Another rustle of paper. âAnd then parent teacher conferences at eight. But I have to stop home in between anyway, so. Iâll be around.â
"Could I come meet you at four? Four thirty? At your house? I'll be sââ
"Yes,â he says, quickly. âYes, I can do four thirty. Yes."
You pause. âGreat. Okay, uh, pencil me in for four thirty to four forty-five.â
âFifteen minutes?â
âI mean, really, it doesn't even have to be that long,â you joke. âIf you get yourself close enough, by the time I get there, you can basically come in me and then I'll just be on my way."
Thereâs a long, long silence. Finally, he says, âIf that's how you want to do it, yeah. Great."
"Great."
"Great."
âGreat.â You swallow. âSo. Iâll see you Friday. At four thirty.â
âFour thirty,â he says. âIâll be ready.â
-
You pull up on his street at four twenty.
You park down the block. You sit there for exactly five minutes, in spite of the fact that you see a light in the windows, his bike sitting out front. You feel like a stalker.
At four twenty-five, you pull down the sun visor and stare at yourself. You put on a fresh coat of lipstick, which then immediately makes you feel very silly, so you wipe it all off. Then you dab it back on. You pinch at your cheeks. You look down at the dress you decided to wear. It was an entirely work-from-home day, mostly paperwork, so you wore a blazer over a dress and now youâre just wearing the dress, and itâs really the kind of dress youâd wear to, like, a date, which means it is lower cut up top and shorter at the hem than most dresses youâd be wearing on a work day. Itâs more of a sun dress, really. So a picnic date dress. You feel both over and underdressed.Â
And also youâre wet. On purpose. As much as anyone can be wet on purposeâyouâd gotten a package from Olya yesterday, with the note attached, in lieu of sperm, and opened it to find some kind of fertility-promoting lube. Which, sure, it was a joke. And yeah, sure, you used some before you left home.Â
You think about what youâd said on the phone. If you get yourself close enough, by the time I get there, you can basically come in me and then I'll just be on my way. Youâd meant it only half as a joke. Youâve dated enough men to keep your expectations low. Youâre not going to assume heâd waste a ton of time on foreplay. Heâs doing you a favor, and he has work tonight, and if heâs in a rush then at least youâll be more ready than with just a little spit and some half-hearted fingering.
Youâre wearing stockings, too, nude pantyhose which seemsâŚyou donât, know, silly? Try-hard? One layer too many? You glance at the clockâfour twenty-sevenâand look out both windows, reach under your skirt, and begin pulling them off, kicking off your shoes with a muffled curse under your breath. Your underwear starts coming off with them, which you fight and then go along with and then decide to commit to. Your skirt is long enough. Youâd promised him this would be quick and easy, right?
You regret it immediately. But itâs four twenty-eight on the dot, and you are allergic to being late, so you shove tights and underwear alike into your glove compartment and drive the twenty feet to his house and pull over and get out.
Up the sidewalk. Up to the porch. You knock.
You wait.
It's colder than it was when you left work. You're really feeling the absence of your stockings right about now, not to mention your underwear, and you're approximately two seconds away from going back to the car to get both when the door swings open.Â
"Hey.âÂ
"Hi," you say.
"Hi."
He's still in his work clothes. Youâve never seen him in his work clothes, actually, and itâs doing wild things to the this man is gainfully employed and good with kids, must procreate part of your brain. It doesnât help that he looks significantly more disheveled than you would expect after a day of teaching sound waves. Heâs breathing faster than usual, chest rising and falling against the blue linen shirt, which is only half-tucked at the bottom, at which point your gaze reaches his pants and you suddenly understand all of the above.
âHi.â You nod in his general direction. "You, um. You got ready."
âI.â His face is flushed behind his glasses, which are maybe the most properly horizontal youâve ever seen them. You expect that to last all of five minutes. âYouâŚsorry.â He shakes his head suddenly, as if trying to shake something loose, and the things he shakes loose are his glasses. Five seconds, then. âCome in.â You follow him through the door, shutting it quietly behind you, your focus split fifty-fifty between trying not to imagine him getting himself ready and trying to keep yourself from leaking. You are failing miserably at both.
Heâs ahead of you, back turned to you, re-rolling up his sleeves. They were already unbuttoned, but shoved up rather than rolled, messy, like heâd gotten home later than planned and immediately got to work doingâwhatever it is he did that you are strictly forbidding yourself from imagining.
âChinese,â he says, nodding at a bag on the kitchen counter. His hands move over his sleeves, four neat folds on each side, and his forearms are flexing and heâs still visibly straining against the zipper of his pants. âI ordered extra. In case you didn't get a chance to eat. And then the contract you sent over, and the test results, too. I printed them out, in case you want a copy. For your records. I went to the library, though, so it switches from colored ink to black and white halfway through. Didnât seem like the kind of thing I should be printing out at school, ha.â
Two things hit you at once: the first, that you are not going to get him out of your system with one fuck. If anything, one fuck might make things worse. The second is that you absolutely cannot, under any circumstances, kiss him, because if you kiss him youâll almost certainly fall in love with him and if you fall in love with him your life will be ruined.
"Right. Thank you. Right.â You are looking all around the living roomâthereâs the couch you used to build pillow forts next to, thereâs the carpet the two of you melted crayons into, thereâs the dining room, opening into the kitchen, where you helped his mom bake cookies, inevitably ending up with more flour on your head than in the bowlâin a bid to avoid looking at him, because you have a hunch that if you look at him and/or stop talking he is going to try to kiss you (because that would be the normal way to start this interaction, versus the objectively insane way you've decided to go about it) and if he doesn't kiss you you suspect one look at the bemused brows-above-the-glasses expression on his face will make you kiss him, which you are not allowed to do.
âSo how wasââ
âI left my underwear in the car. Long story.â The story being that you decided on a whim to leave your underwear in the car and now are regretting it immensely. âAnd I already got myself ready, and I don't want anything toâso we should probably just, um, take care of business first, if you're all good to goâis here okay?â
Here being his dining room table, which you approach and then smooth your hands across and then bend over, pressing your cheek to the wood in order to have a more concrete reason not to be able to look at him.
He laughs. âYou donât want the bed?â
âNope, this works.â
âOh.â He pauses a second, like heâs waiting for you to move. When you keep your face resolutely smushed against the table, he seems to get the memo. âIâalright.â
You feel, more than hear, his footsteps, soft across the floor.
âYou said youâreâthat you got yourself ready,â he finally says. He sounds close enough to touch. You donât move a muscle. âHow ready?â
âReady enough.â You twitch a finger, gesturing. âI, um, I used this thing Olya gave me, this pre-seed thing.â
âPre-seed.â
âItâs just fancy lube, I think.â You bite your bottom lip to try and stop rambling. You cannot stop rambling. âBut it's supposed to be good for, like, sperm motility, or something, and I figured if I inserted it ahead of time then you wouldnât be late for your next thing. Four thirty to four forty-five, remember.â
Itâs a weak attempt at a joke. Youâre not sure it lands. âIâm not in a rush," he says.
âYour Chinese food will get cold.â
He pauses. âI might be in a little bit of a rush.â You laugh, surprised. His voice is warm when he continues, âDonât worry about me.â
âIâm not worrying about you. Iâm worrying about your food.â
âYou donât have to worry about me or the food. I can worry enough for the both of us. Okay?â
You inhale, you count to four, you exhale. âOkay.â
âOkay.â He claps. Itâs not a very loud clap, but it still takes you by surprise. âSo, um, on that noteânot that itâs a worry, itâs not a worry, not worried at all, just notingâif thatâs all you. If you just used the lube and didnât.â The pause that follows lasts about twelve seconds, which you know because youâre still box breathing in order to not hyperventilate. âYou might need to, um, warm up. A little. For it to be comfortable.â
"Oh. Cool.â You think about ring fingers, and shoes, and height, and all kinds of things that donât actually have any proven causative correlation with dick size, and then you think about the tent in his pants when he was half-hard just inside the door, and you conclude that of course, of course this is the way this is shaking out, because you have the worst good luck of anyone on the planet. âCool, cool, cool. Thatâs fine. I can warm myself up more. Let me just.â
âI could. I could do that for you.â
You freeze. You open your mouth, then close it. You open it again. âYou donât have to.â
âI know,â he says. âCan I anyway?â
âSure.â Your brain is producing approximately three thousand thoughts per second, none of them cohesive. âIf thatâs okay with you. If you donât mind.â
âI donât mind. Here?â
You nod. The table is cool and smooth beneath your cheek.
There is stillness and stillness and stillness and then, thereâhis fingers, gentle, just the tips on the back of your thigh. He starts halfway up, just kissing the hem of your dress, and then his fingers travel up and under, and they trace over where your underwear would be, and you know when he reaches the slickness thatâs reached your inner thighs because he pauses.
One agonizing moment passes before his fingers continue their upward path, dipping slightly in at your entrance. You make a concentrated effort to exhale silently. Youâd estimate that you succeed about sixty percent.
âYouâre soâŚâ He takes a deep breath. When he speaks again, itâs very carefully casual. âYouâre wet already. Thatâs good. Thatâs great.â
You blink. âDid you just.â
âWhat?â
âYou just used the encouraging-middle-school-teacher voice. To tell me good job for being wet. During a sexual encounter."
âSexual encounter? I thought this was strictly business.â That gets a laugh out of you. A quiet one. You can hear him smiling, not unkindly, when he continues, âYou seemed like you could use the encouragement. Youâre a little nervous."
"I'm very nervous."
"I know. Thatâs okay.â He finds your clit. You lose the battle to keep silent. Your face flushes immediately, which he can't see, but maybe he can sense it somehow, because he murmurs, âIâve got you."Â
That just makes things worse, actually, because you feel his voice, low and sincere, run down your spine like a hand. And then he actually does stroke a hand down your back, and you wonder if maybe this is some great cosmic punishment for a past life. Heâs not even doing it to turn you on, you donât think, just to comfort youâbut when his hand brushes your neck it does something to you that isn't comfort, and you clench down and whimper for lack of anything to clench down onto. âSorry,â you mumble into the table.
âSorry for what?â
âI donât know. This is justâIâm being so embarrassing.â
âItâs just me,â he says (which is, of course, part of the problem). âIâve seen you embarrass yourself plenty of times.â
You snicker. âHey.â
âBesides. Uh.â He swallows. âTrust me. If you could see yourself from here, you wouldnât, you wouldnât be embarrassed.â
Before you have a chance to process that, his hand slides back to where youâre wettest.
âIâm going toââ He runs one finger over your entrance, then pauses. âOkay?â
âYeah.âÂ
Itâs more breath than sound. But he hears it, and, sure enough, he slips one finger into you. Itâs an easy slide, wet as you are, but heâs still careful about it. Slow.Â
âYouâreââ His voice is different. Strained. âI think you can take two. If thatâsââ
âYes. Yeah, thatâsâah.â Two fingers fit, but itâsâa lot. Snug.Â
âRelax for me?â He angles his wrist to get a thumb back on your clit, and you flutter around him before relaxing enough for him to let him work the two fingers in and out of you. âThere you go. Good job.â
âYouâreââ
âThat wasnât the teacher voice, that was the I-have-two-fingers-inside-you-and-you-feelâyou feelââ He breathes out, and it sounds unsteady as you feel. âThat was, thatâs what that voice was. Can Iââ He curls his fingers inside you, and you let out a broken moan. âGod. Can I. Can I use my mouth.â
Youâve never wanted anything more in your life. âYou donât have to.â
âYou keep saying that. Can I please, can I please use my mouth.â
âYes,â you say, and he gets on his knees so quickly youâre shocked he doesnât bruise them in the process.
The hand on your lower back runs down, crossing the border from skirt to skin, smoothing up the fabric to reveal you more fully. He keeps his fingers in you for a few seconds more, slow, lazy, dragging them in and out, in and out. Like heâs watching them. He curls them again, deliberately, and when he pulls them back out fully you barely hold back a sob.
Thereâs a long moment of stillness.
His one hand is still on your ass. His other hand is nowhere at all, and heâs gone silent, which is terrifying.
You use a finger to brush a strand of hair out of your eyes. âEverything good back there?â
âMmph.â It sounds like his mouth is full, and then, with a quiet pop, not, and your brain shorts out because you realize thatâs the sound of him sucking you off his fingers. âYeah. Yeah. I just.â He presses a kiss to the back of your leg, to the crease where your ass meets your thigh, then pulls back again, and heâs gotten both hands on you, now, and he does what you can only describe as spreading you.Â
Another silence. If it were anyone else, you would feel more exposed than youâve ever been in your life. Itâs him, though, which simultaneously makes it better and much, much worse.Â
âYou,â he finally says, which sounds like the beginning of a sentence until it becomes clear thereâs nothing to follow. He kisses your other thigh, open-mouthed, slow, then rests his forehead against it, and breathes. âFuck.â He says it quietly. Soft. Like itâs just for him.
âLanguage,â you say.
You mean it as a joke. You mean it as a reference. You mean it in a way thatâs meant to break some of the tension and elicit a snarky response, so you are definitely not expecting the next thing he does with his mouth to be pressing his tongue flat against you.
He licks you from your clit to your entrance. The unexpectedness of it, the warmth and wetness and the intensity of it, has your knees buckling so much that you grab the table. You make some kind of sound that you cannot allow yourself to reflect too much upon without feeling intense embarrassment. You make an even more embarrassing sound when he does it again.Â
He pulls back, and you put a lot of effort into not protesting. The effort is in vain.
âWhat was that?â You can hear the unbearably smug grin. âI thought you were telling me to watch my tongue.â
âI wasnât. I.â You breathe slowly, trying to collect your thoughts.
You get about fifteen percent of the way there before he tightens his grip on your hips, pulling you back to meet his mouth so that he can rub his tongue back and forth against you. You let him press you up onto your toes. Your hips tilt further, allowing him closer, and you can feel the tip of his nose nudge against your entrance at the same time his mouth properly closes around your clit.
You have multiple degrees. You pay taxes, you run a business, you live alone in a one-bedroom in San Fran-fucking-cisco, and you have enough in savings that you can decide to get pregnant, on purpose, without considering yourself financially irresponsible. You are a very respectable person. None of that is reflected in the wail you let out as he sucks harder.
His hands are tight around your legs. His face is so firmly pressed into you, you would wonder if he needs to breathe, if you had any fireable neurons left to spend wondering things like that. You are beginning to have trouble breathing. The air keeps catching in your chest, in a building rhythm, and your knuckles are beginning to go white from how tightly you are gripping the table.Â
âRyââ You canât even get out his full name.
He doesnât stop. He doubles down.
You donât know how long you spend there, bent over, unable to do anything but tremble as he sucks at your clit. Just as youâre close, he pulls awayâbut before you can say anything about it, his tongue is inside you, and heâs reached a hand around your thighs to get at your clit from the other side, and you think you might be making sounds in tandem with the thrust of his tongue, but your blood is rushing in your ears a bit, and your toes are curling against the floor, and everything narrows and narrows and narrows untilâ
He says something, you think. Tries to, but you canât understand it, because his tongue is inside you and also because youâre coming so hard that youâre probably going to get a cramp in your right foot.
He doesnât give you any relief. He lets you clench around his tongue, for a while, then pulls out while youâre still going to get his mouth on your clit again, relentless, arms wrapping around you tight to keep you from squirming away, as though you have anywhere to go, as though you arenât trapped, totally and entirely, between the table and him.Â
You come back to yourself in pieces.
Youâre aware of your breath, audible, ragged; your hands, tingling; your right foot, uncurling just in time to avoid a cramp. Youâre aware of his arms, steady; his mouth, gentling on you, pulling away entirely. You make a broken sound into the table.Â
Something nudges at your entrance, and itâs his fingers, three of them, and they slide into you like its nothing, setting off another wave of aftershocks, and heâs slower than ever as he fucks you open on them. âLook at that,â he says, satisfied.Â
Your face is warm. The mahogany is cool against it as you press your forehead back into the table. âYouâre evil.â
âYouâre perfect,â he replies, and you have absolutely nothing to say to that.
He pulls his fingers out as the aftershocks ebb. You donât have any time to respond in any direction before he replaces them again with his tongue.Â
Your hips buck against the table. Your knees genuinely threaten to give out; youâre not entirely sure they donât, you canât tell, because his hands are back on your legs more firmly than ever.
âRyland,â you choke out.
âMmph.â
âRyland,â you repeat, more desperately, reaching back with one hand to push against the top of his head. âIâm good. IâmâIâm ready, Iâm ready.â
He shakes his head, pulling back only to kiss your leg again. âJust a little longer.â Heâs scattering kisses up and down your thighs, now, across the crease, fingers coming back to press against your clit. âJust a little longer, you taste so good, a little moreâI bet I could make you come again like thisââ
âAre you going to put a baby in me or not?â Youâre still a little breathless, but you get enough of a challenge into it that he pauses. âI thought this was strictly business.â
He huffs out a laugh against you. âRight.â Because heâs the worst, he licks you again, circles at your clit, laughs at the way your hips jerk from the overstimulation, before grabbing the edge of the table and pulling himself up to standing.
You hear a buckle, a belt, a zipper. A pause.
You think about how long itâs been since you met him at the door. How everything thatâs happened so far has been pretty much exclusively for you. âIs there anything I can do to help?â you ask, lowering your voice.
You know what his answer will be. Youâve never once had a man turn down a blowjob, which is fine, because you donât really mind blowjobs, most of the time, and for some reason there is a part of you thatâs actually incredibly eager to get this specific manâs cock in your mouth, all of which is why you are entirely unprepared to hear him say, âNo.â
You pause. âOh?â
âIâm good.â He steps forward, the length of him brushing against your ass, and you understand just how good.
âJust fromââ
âYeah.â He uses his hand to line himself up, and you feel him at your entrance, the promise of him. âReady?â
âYeah.â You press your face more firmly into the table, arch your back slightly. You breathe. âReady.â
He presses in.
You are not ready.
You are ready in that you are wet; in that it fits; in that it feels good, properly good, good enough that you let out a long, quiet moan at the same time he does. But itâs still a lot. Itâs still a slight stretch, even after three fingers, even after coming on his tongue.Â
Itâs still him.
Thereâs no helping it. All of the preparation in the world could not have kept you from feeling slightly overwhelmed by the heat and the weight and the understanding that Ryland Grace is inside you. Itâs making you do stupid things, like get a little choked up. You bite back a sound that you fear might come out less sexy than emotional, but you donât bite it back entirely, and he stops, still inside you. âToo much?â
Yes. âNo,â you say, and swallow, because what do you possibly have to cry about? âIâm good. Itâs good, you feelâgood.â
âGood.â He pulls out, then pushes back in, slowly, and the sound he makes isâGod. This was the worst idea youâve ever had. This was the best idea youâve ever had. âYou too. Iâm going toââ His hands press into your waist through the fabric of your dress. âIs this okay?â
âMmhm.â You're both still basically fully clothed, which means you're barely touching, which just narrows your focus to the one specific place where you are touching, and its making the whole thing feel dirtier than if you'd just been naked.Â
You clench around him, and he makes another sound and begins fucking you in earnest.
Heâs still slow. Heâs being careful, you suspect, which you appreciate because he is thick and he is long and your legs are barely functional as is. But the rhythm is steady. He drives into you with slow, deep thrusts, and already you are struggling not to make a whole host of embarrassing noises. You suspect he is also struggling with this because he is losing, badlyâmaybe heâs stifling them from his normal volume (whatever that may be), but he is close enough that you feel his breath on the back of your neck, and every single choked-off moan and whimper and grunt might as well be piped directly into your brainstem. When you give up on trying to mute yourself, and let out a quiet, âYou canâharder,â he groans, long and low, and obliges, picking up the pace enough that you can hear the slap of his hips against yours.
You reach back, at one point. Youâre not exactly sure why. To grab at him, maybeâto pull at his hips, urge him deeper, fasterâbut he catches your hand in his, threading his fingers through yours.
âYouâre so.â He manages to get his other hand under your waist, arm across, lifting, helping you stand up a little so that his chest is pressed against your back, his voice in your ear. âI knew youâd feel good, but I didnâtâyouâre soââ
âI know,â you say, without really knowing what youâre saying. âMe too.â
He presses a kiss to your shoulder, where the neckline of your dress ends, and then further in, further up. You squeeze his hand. He squeezes back, thumb running back and forth across the edge of yours. When he kisses the top of your neck, wet and hot and open-mouthed just below your ear, you let out a desperate sound, not quiet at all, and you clench around him and you feel him smile and you want to strangle him almost as much as you want to kiss him. You want so badly to kiss him. You almost try to crane your head around to allow for it, except you remember dimly that youâre not supposed to, and you canât for the life of you remember why.
When he slows down, you whine. Itâs entirely undignified. You donât really have it in you to care. âWhat are you doing?â
âI just. I just.â He rests his forehead against the back of your head, and through the fog you swear you feel him press his lips to your hair. âI need a second.â
âIs everything okay?â
âYeah.â He swallows, and turns his head to press his cheek to your hair instead. âI donât want to finish too fast,â he admits. You know what that voice looks like on himâit looks like beet red and mortified. âAnd I will. If we keep going. Right now.â
You burst out laughing. You canât help it. âWhat?â You let your head hang, still shaking with laughter you donât really have the breath to afford. âRyland. Thatâs, like. The opposite of a problem. Thatâs the whole point.â
âThatâs not the whole point.â He sounds insulted, which for some reason is even funnier, and makes you laugh even harder. He makes a vaguely pained sound, and you realize retroactively that laughing makes you squeeze which makes you squeeze around him. âYouâstop doing that.â
âThen stop being funny!â You wipe a tear away, and turn just enough to make a sliver of eye contact. âYou know, I would have planned a lot differently if I knew I had to factor in time to explain how babies are made.â
âIââ He goes through amused and annoyed and endeared in a comically short amount of time (and you manage to contain your reaction to light smirking, this time, because you are nothing if not good at taking feedback), and lands on an expression that is a combination of all of those things and leaves you convinced, in an even shorter amount of time, that you are in danger. âDid you really think youâd be out of here in fifteen minutes?â
âNo.â You look at his lips again, and then face forward to cut yourself off. âMaybe.â You squeeze your eyes shut. âIt would have been fine if you ohfuckââ
This last because he presses back into you, all the way, at the same time his hand finds your clit. âDo you still think that?â
âNo.â Your voice is quiet, shaky.
âNo?â
Louder now, âNo, nope, not even a littleââ
âGlad to hear it.â He starts moving again. Itâs slow, and his voice is strained, but heâs moving and his fingers are on you at the same time heâs inside you, and heâs taking advantage of the pace to really focus on what spots heâs angling himself against. âOtherwise I might have gotten offended.â
âDidnât mean toâokay.â Your elbows are beginning to go the way of your knees, which is to say you lower yourself back down to the table while you are still capable of doing so in a safe and controlled manner. His hand is still wrapped around yours. âOh God. You canâfaster. Faster, please.â
âI will. I just want to get you a little closer.â
âI alreadyââ
âNo, that didnât count.â He is going faster, whether he realizes it or not; and it is getting you closer, which was maybe part of the point. âThat didnât count. I want you to come for me.â
âI did come for you.â
âOn me. Around me. Thatâs whatâthatâs all Iâm waiting for, you just have toââ
Itâs working. What he did with his tongue, what he started and finished and started againâyou feel it, feel the threads of it, lengthening, growing, sparking again each time he thrusts inside you.Â
âYeah,â you say, because what else can you say. âYeah. Can you justââ You bite your lip.Â
âWhat?â Heâs breathing faster, again, almost panting.
âYour hand,â you manage. âOnâon my neck.â
âYour neck?â
You nod against the table.
âOkay.â He doesnât stop. âOkay. Can youâwith your handâcan you keep rubbing yourself? Can you do that for me?â
You are flat against the table. The hand around yours doesnât loosen at all. With some effort, you move your other hand down, under you, and it brushes his for a moment before he makes way for you, and uses his newly freed hand to reach up and wrap around the back of your neck.
âLike this?ââ he asks. He sounds almost hoarse, though nothing compared to the sound you let out as you nod, clenching around him even tighter than before. âOkay. And donât stopâyour clitâgood, thatâs good, justââ
His hand tightens around your neck slightly, just on the sides, as he starts fucking you hard, harder than before, hard and fast in a way that is forcing sounds out of you that you cannot control. You try to rub your clit in some approximation of what he was doing, and itâs more slippery than you could have anticipated and your fingers keep grazing his cock as he thrusts into you, and youâre close, youâre close again.
âIââ You make a sound into the table. âIâm.â
âI know.â He doesnât stop. âI know, I know, Iâm hereââÂ
He squeezes your hand again, and for some reason this is the thing that undoes you.
This orgasm is a different kind of good from the first. That was a sharp, hot, precise flash of pleasure; this time is broader, gentler, warmer. True to his word, he follows almost immediately after, shooting hot inside you, and you are full as you squeeze around him and pant into the table.
You can hear his breathing, too, behind you. You listen to it slow in time with yours.
He squeezes your hand again, this time as a precursor to letting go, and it almost hurts as much as the loss of him pulling out of you. He runs the other hand, the neck one, down your back, smoothing your skirt back down as he goes. There are shuffling soundsâboxers, zipper, belt. You donât move.
âHey.â His hand is on your hip againâlighter. Tentative, like he wasnât just digging into it ninety seconds ago. âAre you okay?â
âYeah.â You are still face planted into the table for the same reason as before: if you stand up, you will have to look at him, and why you ever thought that would be easier after he fucked you than before is one of the great mysteries of the universe. âYeah. That wasâIâm justâ.â You stand up very abruptly. âOh my god.â
âWhat?â He sounds alarmed.Â
âI need to lie down.â
âAre you dizzy?â He sounds even more alarmed. âAre youâthe couch, is the couch okay?â
âYes, Iâm fine, the couch is fine but, do you have a towel, itâs justâI need to lie down for twenty minutes,â you say, apologetically as you can muster. He crosses a step to the kitchen, and grabs a towel, and tosses it to you. You catch it without looking at him, and you waddle over to the couch in the unsexiest manner possible, where you proceed to put the towel on top of a pillow and lie down with the pillow under your hips. Your skirt flips back up. You cross your legs as though it will help. It really doesnât. âI completely forgot. Just so it doesnâtâyou know.â
A pause. âSo it doesnât what?â
You look at him. In very short order he has gone from sounding alarmed to wearing a poorly-hidden smirk.
You narrow your eyes at him. âYou know.â
âYeah,â he agrees. âI do. I think. But I kind of want to hear you say it.â
You purse your lips. You stare at the ceiling, then look back at him, then back at the ceiling, then at the insides of your hands. âSo it doesnât leak out,â you say, muffled against your palms. âThere. I said it.â
âYou did,â he says, sounding annoyingly pleased.
âAre you happy now?â
âVery.â His voice is getting closer.
When you open your eyes again, heâs standing over you. You frown, and push his face away with both hands. âI hate you.â
âI know.â
âYouâre the worst.â
âI know.â
âI canât believe I left my underwear in the car.â
âWhy did you do that?â he says, sounding equal parts delighted and bewildered.
âI donât know,â you wail, except you canât help but laugh with him. âIt just seemed like something people do!â
âWhat people?â His voice is further away now, like heâs leaving the room, and thereâs a vague sound of drawers being open and shut. âInternet people? Is this a porn thing I donât know about? Because porn is not supposed to be a good representation of real life, you know, thatâs a specific thing I have to say in the sex ed unit. I have to say that. To a room full of eighth graders.â A drawer shuts. âIs porn where you got the table idea from?â
âNo,â you say miserably, back into your hands. You arenât sure if he can hear you, and you donât care. âThat was all me.â
A piece of fabric hits the back of your hands. You pick it up, to look at it. Boxers. White. Black text on the band.Â
âFor you,â he says. âTheyâre clean.â
âOh. Thanks.â You look at them a moment more, then pull them on. âYou know, I really wasnât expecting this from you.â
âOkay,â he says, leaving to the kitchen. âSo what Iâm hearing is that first, you thought Iâd be the guy who would finish having sex and kick you out within fifteen minutesâstill not over that, by the wayâand then you also thought Iâd let you leak in misery on the couch? For another twenty minutes? And I was still your first choice of sperm donor? Because if thatâs the case, we need to have a serious chat about your taste in sexual partners.â
âYou can connect with Olya about that. I think she already had an intervention planned.â You pull the waistband of the underwear out, then release, letting it snap against your waist. âBut I was talking about the Calvins. I kind of assumed thereâd be, like, little Bunsen burners around the band. Or some kind of day-of-the-week situation.â
âThe Bunsen burners are my Thursday pair,â he says, emerging from the kitchen with a glass of water. He passes it to you before plopping down on the floor next to the couch.
You take a sip. âWhat are you doing?â
âSitting. Next to you.â
âIt looks like youâre lying down.â
He is, in fact, flat on the carpet without so much as a pillow. âYeah. Next to you. Is that allowed?â
âOf course itâs allowed, itâs your house. I just donât want to stop you from doing the things you need to do.â
âWhat do I need to do?â
âI donât know. Put your cold Chinese food in the fridge?â
âI did that already.â
âOh.â You take another sip. âPrepare for parent teacher conferences?â
âI did that already. At school. Itâs mostly the same every time. Parents agree. Parents disagree.â
âParents hit on you,â you continue for him.
His face turns a little pink. âSometimes, yeah.â
You roll your eyes. âOf course they do.â
âWhat, you donât believe me?â
âI literally said of course they do. Because of course they do.â
âWhat does that mean?â
âYouâre. You know.â You look at himâmessy hair, messy glasses, messy smileâand then determinedly back at the ceiling. âYouâre not completely horrible to look at.â
âWow. And this is you after two orgasms.â
âThat was a nice thing! I said a nice thing!â
âYouâre in my house, wearing my boxersââ
âYes, your Bunsen-burner-less boxers. Iâll have to plan around Thursdays, going forward.â
âGoing forward?â he says.
You freeze. You do not look at him. âIf itâs not too much of an imposition,â you say carefullyâand then you are immediately cut off by his hand smushing your face.
âItâs not an imposition,â he says. âIt is absolutely not an imposition. We can do this as much as you want.â
âMmph,â you say.
He pulls his hand back. You look at him. âI just didnât want to assume,â he says.
You stare. Messy glasses, hair, smileâyou look back at the glass. âLike you said, this is me after two orgasms.â You are very interested in the glass and, furthermore, the water inside it. âWhich was, for the record, not the point.â
âOf course itâs the point.â
âBut like, okay, if we were doing this with a turkey baster, that wouldnât even be a concernââ
âWell, we arenât doing this with a turkey baster. I made it very clear that it was on you to provide the turkey baster, and you didnât, soââ
You shove the water at him, if only to shut him up, but youâre grinning. Heâs also grinning. You take the water back, and struggle to take a sip, because it is significantly emptier and you are still flat on your back.
He stands up. âCâmere,â he says. He helps you sit up, and then sits down where your head was, letting you lay back in his lap. âIs this okay? If I sit here?â
âItâs your house, Ryland, you can sit wherever you wantââ He pinches your nose. You glare up at him. He smiles pleasantly down at you. âYes. Idds fide,â you say. âAwesobe. Really.â
He releases your nose, and runs a hand back through your hair. Your eyes shut automatically.
âBut seriously,â he says. âWas thatâwas there anything bad? Anything you didnât like? Iâm very open to notes. For next time. Since thereâs going to be a next time.â
âIt was all good,â you say. You think it might be the first time youâve said that to a guy and honestly meant it. âThe whole thing.â
âThat canât be true.â
You open one eye. âAre you calling me a liar?â The other eye opens. âOr, wait, was it bad for you?â
âWhat? No.â
âI mean it. I am also open to feedback, and I know I was being super weird at the beginning, I was just, like you said, I was nervous, but I can be so much more normal next timeââ
âYou were perfect,â he says, at the same time he runs a hand back over your head. âAnd, sure, Iâd prefer if you werenât that nervous all the time, but thatâs because I donât want to be doing things that make you nervous. So if I amââ
âYou werenât. Itâs just you.â
As in, thereâs nothing you could have done better. As in, you make me nervous just existing. As in, Iâve thought you were perfect since we were in elementary school, and I know you donât mean it back the same way but if you were going to say it at all I wish it had been sooner than this.
He smiles. âYeah,â he says softly. âItâs just me. And itâs just you. So thereâs nothing to be nervous about, yeah?â
âMm.â You let your eyes close back shut as you turn your head, snuggling more firmly into his lap. He makes a noise that sounds like a wince, and shifts beneath you, and you look back up at him. âSorry. Did Iââ
âNope,â he says. His voice is definitely strained. âNo. Youâre fine. I just. Has it been twenty minutes yet?â
You look at him. Then you look at his lap. Then you look back at him. âAlready?â
âYeah, I think. I think itâs been about twenty minutes.â
âIâm pretty sure itâs been less.â
âHas it been an amount of time that would qualify as going forward?â he asks. Then: âWe donât have to, if youâre not up to it.â
You make a show of genuinely considering. âI am a little sore.â
âRight. That, that makes sense.â
âBut not that sore.â You meet his gaze. âAnd probably going again is good. Statistically.â
He nods as you sit up and put the water down on the coffee table. He keeps nodding as you begin to shimmy off his underwear, his own hands going back to deal with his belt and his zipper and all. âYeah. Better odds, definitely better. The numbers alone. If youâre sore, do you want to be on top this time? So you can have more control over howââ
"Right. I just feel like, is that counterproductive? Like, I spent all that time on my back, just to let gravity..."
âIâllââ His mouth clamps shut. âNope.â
You stare at him. In years and years, in decades, youâve never known any version of Ryland Grace to do anything but say exactly what he thinks, exactly at the speed he thinks it. âWhat was that.â
âI was just about to say the worst thing I've ever thought."
"What."
"You'll leave if I tell you."
"What?"
"I was going to say, I'll plug you up."
Youâre not smiling. Really, youâre not. Itâs just that the corners of your mouth are pulling so far up and out that itâs hurting your cheeks. âOh my god."
"I know."
"That's terrible.â
"I told you!"
âLike Iâm, what, a sink? A power socket?â His face is too buried in his hands to allow anything but a muffled groan in response. You grin. He is somehow, in spite of all of this, still hard. âIf you wanted me to leave you could have just said so."
âI donâtââ
"Hey, signal received, loud and clear. Iâll justââ You stand, and turn to the door. You mean it as a joke. It doesnât matter, though, because you donât get that far before he catches your wrist and tugs you back.
It only takes two or three movements for you to straddle him.
All at once your field of vision is very full of nothing but messy hair, and eyes bright behind his glasses, and his stupid perfect nose, and his mouthâ
"We can't kiss," you blurt out.
He blinks. His face stays still otherwise. âOkay.â
"It's a rule I have. For hookups. No kissing on the mouth.â At the word mouth, his eyes drop to yours, which is fine, thatâs normal, you canât just tell someone not to think of an elephant. But the thought of him thinking about kissing you makes you dizzy enough that you rush to continue, âEverywhere else is fine, though."
You are not a good liar. He is an even worse liar, which might be the only way you get away with this. He also might be justifiably distracted by the fact that the entire naked length of him is pressed up against the entire naked length of you, and you are wetter than before from his mouth and from two orgasms and from him leaking out of you.
"Everywhere else?" he asks.
You nod.Â
âHere?â His hand is warm against the back of your neck as he drags his thumb back and forth across your neck, just below your ear.Â
When you nod, he follows with his mouth.
He continues lower, fingers and then lips, to your shoulderââHere?ââyour sternumââHere?ââand then his hand is cupping your breast over your dressââHere?ââat which point your nodding becomes frantic. You dip your shoulder, helping him push down the strap and the neckline until heâs able to dip into your bra and free you and drag a tongue across the curve, closing his mouth around your nipple as you wrap an arm around his head and press him to you and wind your fingers into his hair.Â
He sucks harder, harder, until the pleasure has a sting to it. You tug at his hair. He relents, pulling away only to replace his mouth with his hand, his thumb, back and forth as he laughs into your neck.
âYouâre so,â he starts, then pauses to press his hips more firmly into you, then huffs out another laugh, low and disbelieving. âThe sounds you make.â
Your face heats up. âSorry,â you mumble into the side of his head.
âNo. Donât you dare. Theyâre great sounds. Excellent sounds. Very helpful.â You throb against him at that, and he must feel it, because his next laugh chokes off. âCan Iâare youâinside?â
âInside,â you agree, a little breathlessly. You lift your hips just enough to line him up to you, and thereâs a genuine pang in your chest from how badly you want to kiss himâ
âbut then heâs inside you, and inside you and inside you and inside you, taking up so much space that you donât have any left for silly things like regret.
His mouth is back on your chest, your collar, pushing down your dress on the other side. Youâre struck withâsomething. Jealousy, maybe. Your hands loosen from their death grip on his shoulders to grab at his shirt, the buttons, greedy, frantic. âCan Iââ
Youâre clumsy with the buttons, so he comes to your rescue. Heâs somehow even worse. Between the two of you, you manage to fumble a few open, and having those few inches of chest-to-chest contact when you bury your head back in his neck feels nothing short of religious.Â
Aside from minute adjustments of the hips, and a twitch inside you, heâs trying very hard to be still. You can tell its an effort because, when you finally move, lifting up slowly on shaky legs, his fingers tighten on your hips. You sink back onto him with a slow, intentional breath.
âGood?â he asks into your jugular. âIt doesnât hurt?â
âNo.â
It does. But itâs a low, quiet ache, a base note of soreness that only intensifies the pleasure, until your thighs give out and you lower yourself back down more quickly than planned, and the hit of him against your cervix makes you yelp. âA little,â you amend.
âSorry!â He sounds panicked, which is so endearing it almost makes you forget about the pain. His hands visit lower on your hips, cupping your ass, helping you lift up a little as he presses his hips down and away from you, and a sound escapes you that has nothing to do with pain or soreness and everything to do with the drag of him inside you. âSorry, sorry. Is thatâwe should stop. Letâs stop.â
Now itâs your turn to panic. âNo. No stopping.â
âI donât want to hurt you.â
âYou wonât. Itâs all right if you do.â
âIt is absolutely not all right, thatâsââ
âI like it,â you admit, and when he looks up you force yourself not to close your eyes or look away. Whatever sentence he was in the middle of dies on his lips. You need to stop looking at his lips.
âOh,â he says.
âIt feels good.â You watch him watching you. âI want to be a little sore. I want to be able to remember you were inside me.â
That last part slips out on accident, and you have a front row seat to watch it land.
His eyes are bright behind the glasses (crooked, smudged, a little foggy), but thereâs a stillness to his expression overall, like heâs trying very carefully not to scare off an endangered animal, except for a tiny little twitch at the corner of his mouth, and you want to kiss the corner of his mouth so now you do have to close your eyes.
The next two seconds feel like they last about an hour.
âOkay,â he says, like heâs still thinking it over as he says it, and then, more resolutely: âOkay.â
Something unties in your chest. You open your eyes, and see him looking at you likeâlikeâyou canât examine that expression too closely, actually. If you think about that expression too much you are going to start having all kinds of other thoughts you arenât allowed to have. âOkay?â
âBut we go slow.â
âSlow is good.â
âAnd if it starts toâif it hurts in a way that doesnât feel good, we stop. Tell me right away, and weâll stop.â
âI will,â you agree, already shifting your hips a bit in his hands to press back against him. You donât take him all the way down to the hilt. Almost, but not quite. You feel him press against the back of you, and you let yourself sink down just a millimeter more, earning that bit of pain, the sweet ache, before nodding. âThere.â Your eyes flutter shut, your head tipping down. âUntil there is good.â
He nods. His forehead is pressed to yoursânot on purpose, you think, thatâs just how your head fell, thatâs out of your controlâand youâre breathing the same air, and you honestly deserve a Nobel for not closing those last few centimeters.
âGood.â His voice has dropped about an octave.
You clench around him, and you feel his thighs flex, under yours, through his pants, as he presumably fights the urge to thrust up into you.
âSorry,â he says, which confirms it. You feel the tip of his nose travel up across your forehead, followed by his lips, ending at your hairline. âWeâre going slow. I want to go slow. Itâs good that weâre going slow. I can kiss you here?â
âYes.â He presses his mouth more firmly against your head, and you angle your face into his neck. âWe donât actually have to go that slow.â
âItâs good,â he repeats, like heâs trying to convince himself, âthat weâre going slow.â
âBut your food. Itâll get cold. Itâs probably already cold.â
âI have a microwave. A great one.â
âMmhm.â
âActually itâs just okay, you remember, itâs the same one, I think itâs probably been here since the Cold Warââ You laugh again, which makes you pulse around him again, and he lets out a shaky exhale. âHave I mentioned how glad I am that weâre going slow.â
âOnce or twice.â
âGreat, great. Good. Just wanted to make sure you got that. On the record. In your records. One of them. Both. Either. And it doesnât hurt.â
âNot in any way I donât like.â
He makes a sound into your hair that could best be described as tortured. His fingers are tight on your hips, digging. You know that itâs just practical, that heâs mostly doing it to help support your weight so that you donât move too fast, donât hurt yourself again. You are still hopeful of bruises tomorrow. You are also hopeful that heâll fuck you properly sometime in the next ten seconds, because if he doesnât you might die.
âYou donât have to hold backâ you say. âI mean it. As fast as you need. As hard as you need.â
A pause. Then he guides your hips forwardânot deeper, but closer, flush against him, and the pressure takes you by surprise, and you whimper.
âYou get to feel good too,â he says. âYou said whatever I need, right? Anything I want?â
âMmhm.â He moves you, and you let him. âMmhm.â
âRight. Not too deep,â His mouth finds its way back to your neck, just below your ear, and you keep rocking against him in that heavy, unrushed rhythm, your clit pressed back and forth against his stomach where his shirt has ridden up. âNot running anywhere, just this, justââ You pulse around him, and his voice breaks. ââ just like that. Need to hear you make those pretty noises while you squeeze down on me.â
âRyââ
âYou want me to fill you up, right, you want me to put a baby in you, thatâs the whole point, and I want to, Iâm going to, I justâthen I need to feel youâneed you to feel good. Need you to come again.â
âRyland.â
âYou can do that for me, right, you can, you can, itâs only fair.â
You donât know how long you stay like this. Itâs slower than you wanted, but exactly as fast as you need, and he is patient, steady, even as the monologue runs away from him and he begins babbling nonsense into your ear. Or maybe heâs making perfect sense. You think you hear your name a few times, but who even knows anymore. Youâre pretty sure youâve lost the ability to process language.
He lets go of your hips on one side to get a hand back on your chest, gentle, rolling your nipple between forefinger and thumb. You bury your face in his neck, and then make some effort to lift it back up, until you are practically cheek to cheek.
âItâs only fair, you have your rule, I have mine,â he says. You donât even know what heâs talking about. Youâre not sure he does, either. His mouth is next to your mouth, level, along the same plane, and it would be so easy, nothing at all, to turn your head andâ
And then his mouth moves higher, to your eyes, next to your eyes, and heâs saying, âHere, is here okay, can I kiss you here, can I please kiss you here.â
You make some sort of noise of agreement, so far past words you donât know if you could produce a full sentence if you tried.
The moment he has your permission, he turns his head just the slightest bit to properly press his mouth against your temple, and he keeps it there while he crushes you to his chest with one arm around your waist, keeping the pressure of his pelvis against your clit, and every sound he makes vibrates through your skull as he finishes inside you.
Neither of you moves for a long, long time. Your chest is pressed to his. You could almost swear you feel his heart beat through it, a little faster than yours, a little out of rhythm.Â
âYour food is definitely cold,â is the first thing you manage.
âIt is,â he agrees. âBecause I put it in the fridge.â
âOh.â The freckles do go down to his shoulders, you see now. You run your finger between them, tracing constellations, up until the place where they disappear under his shirt where you pushed it back. âWow. When did you do that?â
âBefore. After. Between. I told you that. I said it out loud.â
âI forgot.â The comfortable silence returns. You feel his hand, slow up and down your back, and the other in your hair, still, his thumb against your temple. âI probably need to lay down again,â you finally say. âFor twenty minutes. I think thatâs the rule.â
âSure. Just one more second.â
âOkay.â
You let several minutes pass.
âI donât even know why twenty minutes. It seems like an arbitrary amount of timeâ
âYeah?â He kisses your temple againâslow, like heâs committing it to memoryâand then your jaw, and then your collarbone, and then your neck again, and it tickles and you giggle and while you giggle he finally turns, careful, and lowers you back down to the couch. He pulls out of you, soft, and youâd protest but you are honestly too satisfied down to your bones to do anything but let him. âI thought you did all that research.â
âI did. Nobody on Reddit could agree on a number.â
âYou did not just use research and Reddit in the same sentence,â he says, walking back to the kitchen. The sink goes, and then stops. The fridge opens. A bag crinkles on the counter. The chiming of silverware in a drawer, the one to the right of the sink, next to the junk drawer. Your heart feels so full it could burst. Hereâs to the things that last.
âCool it, doc. We canât all have a fancy degree.â
âYou want fried rice, or white?â
âBoth.â
âOn it. And you literally have a J.D. Juris doctor.â
âYes, but that doesnât make me a researcher, it just means I get paid twice as much to do half the work of one.â
âMean,â he says. You stick a tongue out at him, even though you know he canât see it. âBut fair.â
The microwave goes. You lie back, having pulled his boxers back on, and you update your mental profile of him, this man youâve known for the better part of thirty-four years.
Ryland Grace is not the kind of guy who has sex and then kicks you out within fifteen minutes.
Ryland Grace is also not the kind of guy who lets you leak in misery on the couch.
Ryland Grace is smart but not obnoxious about it.
âYou want something other than water? I guess itâs late for coffee. Or is that one of those things you canât have? Like alcohol? I didâI havenât done, like, research, thatâs a completely different thing, but I was reading aboutâŚâ
Ryland Grace is smart but mostly not obnoxious about it.
Ryland Grace prints things out at the library if heâs afraid theyâre inappropriate for the school printer
Ryland Grace is the kind of guy who agrees to donate sperm to an old friend without question.
He is tall, and brilliant, and sweet, and funny, and has a great head of hair, and is also built to a crazy degree for someone whose primary form of exercise seems to be biking places.
Heâs farsighted, but that means he keeps the glasses on during sex and that honestly has to count as a pro.
He is good in bed, and you get to keep on sleeping with him for as long as it takes for you to get pregnant.
That last part makes you pause.
The as long as it takes part. The part where thereâs a guaranteed end date.
Which is your fault, of course, and also entirely by design. Help me have a baby is a very different context than help me have a baby and also we should date. Itâs completely different than help me have a baby and also remember that time sixteen years ago when I poured my heart out to you and youâ
âThere.â He places a coaster on the coffee table, and a steaming plate on top of it. âYou donât have to sit up yet, itâs pretty hot. I just put a little of everything. And itâs definitely a no on the coffee, unless you want decaf, but then I remembered you hate coffee so I just brought more water.â
You take the fork he offers you. âThanks, Ryland,â you say.
It comes out softer than you meant for it to. He doesnât notice. He just smiles, and goes back to the kitchen to make himself a plate. You watch him go, and you think:
Ryland Grace is the perfect person for you to have fun with, have a baby with, and then forget about completely.
You can do that. You can totally do that. You just donât know how youâre going to do that.
But then he comes back with a steaming plate of food of his own, and jokes about burning his tongue, and then immediately burns his tongue, and you laugh at it like a friend would. And, once youâre satisfied that youâve been on your back enough to be relatively leak-proof, you sit up and race him to see who can finish their noodles the fastest (he lets you win, like he used to when you were kids), and every time you offer to leave he finds some excuse or some question that requires you to stay, until he actually has to leave to avoid being late for work, and you drive home and you shower and you go to sleep in your own bed. And you wake up only thinking about him a little.
đđđđđđđ: Having a weekend-getaway with your friends means a rental in the middle of nowhere â the lack of light pollution seemingly perfect for stargazing in the jacuzzi with your friend, Ryland.
đ / đ: i labelled this afab!reader bc thereâs dialogue ab the differences in men and womenâs body temps, and reader also wears a bikini (but i hate the gendering of clothes tbh, wear what u want everyone)
The moonlight cast its glimmer down against the bubbling water of the jacuzzi, the water sparkling with pure white intention; some of the glow reflecting onto the features of your face, now all alone with just the moon for company. The lack of light pollution from being in the middle of nowhere made the sky all the more clearer, moon and stars shining down how they were meant to, blessing those down on earth with their calming properties; soaking under the cool-light of the constellations dotted across the sky.
A quiet rustling came from the left of you, craning your head to see Ryland poking his head out from the patio of the rental lodge, his eyes falling on you with a kind smile.
âSaw you all alone out here.â He spoke softly, feet beginning to carry him closer to you; perching just on the edge of the jacuzzi with suave, like heâd been practicing the particular manoeuvre just to impress you â his head cocked to the side as he stared, examining your face as if you were something magical.
âEveryone went to bed. Booooring! House full of grown adults but they have a strict bedtime schedule.â You sung sarcastically, coming to swim to the wall of the jacuzzi where Ryland was, folding your arms on top of the cold material as you offered him a smile.
âWhatcha doin?â He pressed further, now dipping his hand into the hot water, enjoying how the liquid effortlessly slipped through his fingers as he waved them back and forth.
âLook up.â You answered simply, obliging your own comment, eyes coming to settle on the same view theyâd been gazing at for minutes now.
âWoah.â Ryland breathed out with a small laugh, his eyes returning to your face as you looked up at the stars.
His heart fluttered for a moment, the reflection of the moon twinkling bright in your pupils, a glowing white cast settling across your cheeks under the ethereal light; complimenting the contours of your face in a way that almost made his heart stop. Your gaze was full of wonder, astonishment like heâd never seen before, noticing how your breathing seemed to slow in contentment.
His mind began to wander the longer he stared â wondering how he could bring a star down to you, offering it to you through soft-hands because thatâs what you deserved. The cold breeze settled against his skin, goosebumps beginning to form but inside, he only grew warmer at the thought of retrieving a star for you. How your face would light up, how youâd smile back at him.
âYou cominâ in?â
He couldnât say no to you, not that he even wanted to. Ryland rushed back inside at lightspeed, swiftly changing into a plain-black pair of swim trunks, carelessly pulling a white shirt over his head before returning outside at a pace youâd think meant you could disappear at any second.
You were still patiently perched on the wall of the jacuzzi, head tilted to lay against your arms, as if just the expression on your face was coaxing him to get into the water; like a siren, singing a song just for him.
âWhy are you wearing a shirt?â You laughed, moving out of the way so he could stumble into the jacuzzi, almost slipping as he did so. Your back rested gently against the wall, shuffling so you could be more comfortable.
Ryland sat just across from you.
âThe waterâs warm but itâs cold out!â He protested quickly, the water now beginning to completely soak his white shirt, clinging to the contours of his abs and chest â biceps bulging out of the shirt in a way that caused your head to tilt, biting your lip to fight the pleased smile that was threatening your lips.
Your heart skipped a beat, beginning to gently hammer against your chest at the sight of him. Smoothly, you recovered within just a few moments.
âIâm wearing significantly less than you, and Iâm perfectly fine.â Your hands gestured in the water, pointing at the black bikini covering the necessary parts it was designed to, leaving that but not much else to the imagination; enjoying the feeling of the water against your skin.
âYou know, biologically speaking, womenâs core body temperatures are actually slightly higher than mens. About 0.2°C warmer, actually.â
He seemed to speak nervously, eyes darting around the jacuzzi as not to focus on you too long; a small blush creeping up against his cheeks as to avoid ogling you, burning the image of your frame behind his eyes for the rest of eternity, where you could greet him whenever he closed his eyes.
It wasnât that he was some sort of pervert preying on the vulnerable lack of clothes covering your body, heâd just found himself infatuated with every part of you â how your waist curved out to your hips, connecting down at your thighs in a way that made him dizzy with adoration, like he was in front of a beautiful sculpture that took millions of years to finish, just admiring every single detail.
âI hear that, Dr Grace.â You drawled the last part, nodding slowly, âHowever, women actually have a lower metabolic rate, meaning we produce less heat. Therefore, weâre likely to feel colder.â Rylandâs eyes seemed to light up when you finished your sentence, now staring dead at your face as a surprised and admirable smile played at the corners of his mouth as you smirked back at him.
âNot just a pretty face, Ry. I know a thing or two.â You hummed proudly, watching as he peered at you just over the rims of his glasses, eyebrows raised ever so slightly as his gaze burned into your own.
âWell, just so you know, I never doubted that for a second.â
Ryland didnât address the pretty comment, but he didnât need to â he knew that you were aware of his feelings, just like he was aware you thought he was handsome, even without it being brought to light verbally.
Lingering gazes of mutual pining, hugs that lasted a little too long, smiles that made your cheeks sore, everything was unspoken between the two of you, but it was certainly acknowledged in both of your brains; akin to telepathic communication, an entanglement of souls who understood each other like no one else ever had, a special connection for just the two of you.
âYou know much about the stars?â You questioned quietly, eyes returning to look back at the sky.
âYeah, quite a lot.â
âTeach me?â
Once again, he couldnât say no.
The trees swayed gently in the breeze, dimming the light of the stars Ryland was talking about every so often, a plethora of knowledge falling from his lips as he analysed each and every one, slowly talking you through what it meant, what it represented, how old it was and everything else stored in his brain related to the matter.
Ryland wasnât aware but youâd sneak glances at him every so often, admiring the concentration on his face as he looked toward the view, watching how his lips seemed to move in slow-motion the longer he captured your attention, metaphorically grasping tight at every part of you.
He looked adorable when he was talking so intelligently about something he cared for, his words careful to not get anything wrong in a way that would disrespect the phenomena, like heâd drop dead on the spot if the universe happened to be listening in.
But his universe was listening, sat right across from him in the water, staring in admiration.
Ryland continued babbling about a new star, prompting you to look upward again as he began describing where it sat.
âWait. I canât see it.â You huffed, eyes quickly darting to locate the star he was referring to, receiving no luck as it still hadnât came into view. Your heart sunk slightly, a burning desire to investigate the tangent heâd just begun.
âThe treeâs in your way.â Ryland concluded, leaning forward to capture your wrist gently in his grip, causing you to look down at him. âCâmere.â He tugged you gently to where he sat, watching carefully for your expression as he settled you just over his lap; your knees firmly planted into the raised seating platform, either side of Ryland as you hovered above him, half of your body now emerging out of the water.
Droplets trickled down the soft skin, meeting the water below you in an imaginary race, each droplet taking itâs own path to the same destination in a way that captivated him for a moment; his heart swelling instantly, realising just how real you were, just how much he loved you.
The two of you just stared at each other for a moment, butterflies dancing around in your stomachâs, wondering if this would finally be it â the moment that unspoken turned to spoken, where things would change.
Ryland brought his arm out of the water, using his finger to point up vertically towards the sky.
Your eyes trailed his arm as he extended it upwards, eyes finally settling on the constellation as his finger worked on connecting the dots, tracing the shape of the constellation for your brain, hand moving elegantly against the cold night-air as he resumed his tangent.
âThink this oneâs my favourite.â You smiled up at the sky, waiting for him to finish his train of thought before you spoke.
Ryland hummed in agreement, mind all too far away to focus on anything but you, how you smiled just above him; carefully examining every star the sky had to offer.
âI like the night sky. Stars. Space. Itâs a reminder that thereâs something out there bigger than us.â You continued poetically, eyes still fixed on the sky.
Rylandâs heartbeat grew faster, ready to jump out of his throat as his head began to spin, tirelessly mulling over a million different scenarios in his head. The one where he kissed you, and you pulled away from him. The one where he kissed you, and you kissed him back. The one where he did nothing.
His lips begun to tremble slightly at the thought of everything racing through his brain, internally pacing back and forth with indefinite intention.
The positive fluttering in his stomach skewed into a sort of pit, nerves overcoming him, nerves that were pointless if he was never going to make a move.
âMe too. It reminds me that maybe I shouldnât be so afraid all the time. That I should do all the things I want to do while I can.â His voice was quieter now, a softer tone as you looked down at him, a shiver coursing through your body at the sudden breeze; dipping gently back into the water, hovering just above his lap.
Ryland strategically left out the part where heâd been on a government vat, working tirelessly in the lab figuring out how to breed something called astrophage, in fact heâd practically begged Stratt to let him come home for the weekend.
The sun was dying.
The longer he spent working for the government, the more the concept seemed to settle in his brain, activating just the right parts where he knew he shouldnât take anything for granted anymore â his anxiety and worry grew insignificant when the world could be forced into an ice age within its next years.
He didnât want to spend his last days dwelling on the fact that he never kissed you, never directly told you how he felt. If the harsh conditions of the cold didnât kill him first, he was sure this would.
His breath fanned gently against your lips as you fully settled yourself in his lap, skin growing warmer instantaneously from the gently flowing water, and the situation youâd found yourself in; instinctively leaning all too close to him. The water sloshed softly around the two of you, eliciting a pleasant noise before you spoke up again.
âWhat are you afraid of?â Your voice was barely above a whisper as Ryland leaned his forehead against your own in response, his breath staggering the longer you lingered so close to him, eyes still scanning every inch of your face.
Ryland was careful as his hand planted softly against your thigh, his thumb rubbing slow circles against the skin as you seemed to look down at his hand, a half-smile now dancing across your face at the sight. He mirrored your smile subconsciously, feeling how his heartbeat began to slow the longer his hand lingered there, a state of peace and calmness flowing through his body.
âA couple things.â He whispered admittedly, his voice hoarse as if speaking too loud would ruin the moment.
Ryland leant forward ever so slightly, coming to brush the tip of his nose against your own; feeling how, despite the hot-water, goosebumps began to form on the skin of your thighs. His eyes left your face for just a moment, settling on your arms which were also overcome by goosebumps, looking back up at you with a glimmer in his eyes.
He was so close to you, but somehow it didnât feel like enough.
âCan I help?â The noise barely left your mouth, feeling how when you spoke; your lips briefly brushed against his but remained there in comfort.
Ryland stuttered for a moment, his thumb stilling against the skin of your thigh.
His hesitance was adamant, and quickly noticed, feeling your heart sink ever so slightly that maybe you had pushed him a little too far. A frown was threatening to break out across your lips; disappointed but understanding that maybe this wouldnât be the moment afterall. Just another one of those close near-misses that always seemed to involve him chickening out at the last second.
You began to shift your knee, ready to move yourself off him and walk back to your room, scream into your pillow and ideally, get a wink of sleep before you set out on the journey home tomorrow.
To your surprise, Ryland quickly grabbed at the side of your leg; a little too harshly for what was necessary, but he couldnât help it. The thought of you leaving him all alone, the thought of you being disappointed that yet again he was too much of a coward to take a further leap, it all seemed to factor into his nails now digging in against the plush skin.
He gently settled you over him again, watching how your eyes seemed to light up at the notion, a quiet and amused laugh spilling from your lips as his grip eased; replaced by the soft feeling of the pads of his fingers, kneading carefully.
âStay.â He hummed sweetly, finally closing the gap between the two of you.
He brought his free hand out of the water, coming to lay it gently against your cheek while he kissed you with the fire of a thousand suns â silent pining for far too long all now seeming to spill out onto your lips moving against his own, his entire body feeling like it was floating. The kiss went on for a while, neither of you particularly wanting it to end; pushing the limit of the oxygen left in your bodies as far as it would go before you pulled away, now breathless.
âI was beginning to lose hope for a second there.â You joked, still comfortably close to him.
âDo you mean this specific moment, or the thousand other ones where I shouldâve kissed you?â He chuckled. His voice was raspier now, hand still resting against your cheek as he looked up at you.
A small giggle left your lips, revelling in the comfort of his forehead against your own.
âI couldnât think of a better moment than now.â He pecked at your lips again, enjoying how you seemed to twitch for a moment, completely taken aback by his movement. âJust surrounded by beautiful things. The trees. The stars. You.â
âMe?â You gasped sarcastically, bringing a finger up to point at yourself, as if you had no idea.
He laughed in response, cocking his head as he examined every inch of your face.

A draining week leads to a mini panic attack, but Ryland, however, will always be there for you.
w.c: 1.06k
Warnings: spiraling, panic attack (?) (idk if it is truly is just putting it there just in case), shitty week, a lil self-indulgent if i do say so myself, hurt/comfort ish, Ryland is the best man ever i do not make the rules, written with fem reader in mind but can be read as gn.
Usually you love this job.
The kids love learning, and you love teaching and showing them new subjects. But this week has just drained everything out of you. And today was just the tip of the iceberg. Your alarm didn't go off (again), you forgot to prep your lunch for today, the printer decided to run out of ink halfway through getting today's worksheets, and the class would not settle once you got in. You felt suffocated.
The free period (after 3 disorganized, chaotic classes) was when you could finally take a breather. You sit at your desk, leaning back into your seat as you take deep breaths. You could feel the lack of energy, having slept badly these last few days, and not being able to rest means your performance at school is worse.
You groan into your hands, leaning forward and resting on your desk. The wood is cool against your skin, calming the nerves you feel, but itâs not enough. Your heart aches at the thought of having to teach more classes today, head pounding from the lack of nutrition since this morning. You could feel your throat closing up as you choke out a sob.
Youâre so far into your head that you donât hear the door opening, the quick steps rushing towards you, and the person calling out your name. What you do feel is the cold hand of someone on the back of your neck, rubbing gently, trying to coax you out of the state you're in.
When you finally lift your head, you see Ryland crouching beside you, eyes, brows furrowed, and looking so worried. He sighs in relief when you finally look at him, feeling an ache at the glossy look in your eyes.
âSweetie, whatâs wrong?â His other hand, which was holding onto the desk to stabilize him, came to cradle your face oh so gently; the cool contrast of his palm felt like bliss.
But he's quick to notice your shallow and uneven breathing, trying his best not to freak himself out and focusing on you.
âCan you hear me, sweets?â You nod, trying and failing to calm down.
This wasnât supposed to happen; he shouldnât see you like this. It only makes it worse, the sting in your eyes hurts a little more as you squeeze them shut, begging you werenât crying. You try to mutter out an "im fine", but it comes out as gibberish, which just alarms him more.
âC'mon, breathe with me.â
He takes your hand and placed it over his chest, taking deep exaggerated breathes in hope that you could follow. But it wasnât doing anything, you seemed to be mumbling to yourself now, and you were so out of it. His words felt miles away, your thoughts were going so fast you couldn't-
âAahh!â A sudden high-pitched yelp snapped you out of whatever spiraling was happening, your eyes finally falling onto his.
âWha-â
âI'm sorry you werenât listening to me, please can you match my breathing, sweetie?â
You finally feel the rough fabric of his shirt, playing with the texture between your fingers, before firmly placing your hand onto his chest, feeling his steady, calm heartbeat under your palm.
His chest rose and fell, and heâs counting the seconds, breathing in, holding, and breathing out. His hand at some point slid on top of yours, giving you some extra grounding. In a few minutes, you felt more normal, looking at him with heavy eyes.
âThank you.â
You sigh, melting into his gentle, comforting touch, your own hand coming up to hold the one on your cheek.
âItâs been a long weekâ you whisper, not wanting to raise your voice.
There was a silence that settled between the two of you, Ryland trying to decide what would be the best course of action here.
âDo you wanna talk about it?â The hand holding yours steady on his chest didn't falter, wrapping his fingers around yours, engulfing it completely.
He's noticed your distance and lack of words when asked about your day. He never pushed you to say anything, just assuming that itâs been a tiring week. And he knew you, knew you hated to âbotherâ him with your problems, but he has never considered you a burden, and never will.
You contemplate his offer, knowing that you could talk about it, that it would help you calm your mind. But itâs sooo much, and the last thing you want to do is add to his problems. But heâll counter it like he always does.
âItâs a lotâ
âI donât mindâ
âI donât wanna add more to your problemsâ
âYour problems are also mine.â
âRyland-â
He says your name reassuringly, eyes softening up.
You sigh and finally nod, allowing him to know whatâs on your mind. Itâs still so new, being able to rely on someone, but he has never turned it down. He hums happily, standing from where he was, hands slipping down to yours, helping to stand up from the seat, delicately letting you adjust.
âI'm free for 15 minutes since I let the kids off early. Letâs get some fresh air.â
You spend the next 15 minutes in the parking lot, your speech somewhere between ranting and pure silence, when your thoughts start to consume you. Ryland is quiet as he listens to you, only speaking when he notices your thoughts eating you alive and helping you not spiral again. He had his hand resting on your back, tracing slow lines and occasionally squeezing your shoulders in a comforting way. After, he will walk you back to your classroom for the next class, saying how he was going to eat lunch with you like always, kissing the top of your head softly. Your next class was bearable; they werenât screaming at the top of their lungs, and they actually listened.
And for the rest of the day, he's around you whenever he can be, making sure that he can help in whichever way he can.
During lunch, he came in with his food and an extra bowl from the teachers' lounge. Before you could even argue heâs dividing his food equally, and already talking about his kids rage-baiting him in todayâs lesson. When he notices you're not touching your food, because you obviously feel bad for taking half of his, that's when he comments on it.
âI noticed you didnât bring your lunch bag, so I thought we would share.â
He definitely stays over that night, making sure that you don't overwork yourself by trying to get next week's work ready. He helps you cook dinner, washing the dishes afterward.
While you're cuddled in bed, staring up at the dark ceiling, it's like he can hear your thoughts in the silence, and he's peppering kisses all over your face just to hear your giggles.

You tell Ryland about your day, both of you tangled in bed after calling it a night, his face rests in the crook of your neck. He is completely relaxed as your fingers run through his soft strands, having already finished talking about his own day.
Your lips occasionally brush against his forehead as you speak. Every few minutes, you feel the gentle vibration of his hum over the pulse of your neck, letting you know heâs paying attention.
You pause mid-sentence, feeling his teeth trace your skin, followed by a light press of them. âMhm? Whyâd you stop talking?â his words muffle against you, âMâ listeningâ. Blinking a few times, you continue talking as his steady breathing hits your skin.
A few seconds later, you feel the gentle pressure of his teeth again. This time you ask him, âRy, whatâre you doing?â He freezes, pulling his head back an inch, he whispers, âUh sorry, baby. Didnât realiseâ making you smile.
Youâve seen him mouth the end of a pen and the handle of his glasses several times while reading, planning lessons, or just lost in thought. Realising he is stimming while focusing on your words, you assure him, âSâokay, Ry. I donât mindâ soothing his hair down.
His lips press against your skin again. You feel his exhale of relief as you pick up right where you left off.

It was movie night, you both love movie nights!! Early on in your relationship, it was a way to spend time together after work, unwinding and talking about each other's day while you cuddled on the couch. You would put on some god-awful sci-fi movie that Ryland would be making fun of and pointing out all the incredibly inaccurate special effects they had. But you wouldnât spend your nights any other way.
You were laying on top of him on the couch, his arm lazily encircled your back and draw figures of eight into the soft fabric of his borrowed shirt. He was mumbling something about there being no sound in space, which makes you smile at how ridiculous he could be sometimes. Your head moves to get a better view of his scrunched up nose and exasperated expression.
Ryland peaks down when he felt the movement on his chest, and his face instantly switched into a small smile when he looks at you, making your heart flutter. He always managed to make you giddy in the stupidest ways possible.
His hand came up to smooth the baby hairs at the top of your head, which didn't do much since they will never go down. Then it traveled back down, tracing the vertebrae of your spine. It was a soothing touch, one he does almost every single time he manages to have you this close to him.
âAre you liking it?â He asked
âMmm nooo, itâs boring,â you admit, looking back at the tv. You felt his laugh, his chest rising and falling with each little noise he made.
âYeah it isâ, he responds. His hand stopped on the small of your back, lingering. You were about to turn back to him but he tapped you gently, âGotta pee.â
You giggle, getting off of him and watching his figure retreat into the dark hallway. You take that as your moment to walk to the kitchen to grab something to drink. You donât bother flicking the light on; you knew the place like the back of your hand at this point. Grabbing one of his mismatched cups from the drying rack, you fill it with water and bring it up to your lips to feel the cool liquid go down your throat. You turn around, hearing the TV still on in the other room, the light of it casting a cold shine into the hallway. As if on cue, Ryland's figure comes back into view, startling slightly when he sees you standing in the dark kitchen. You try not to laugh at the way he looks like he saw a ghost, skin turning pale, and all.
âWhatâre you doing there!?â He asked with a far too high pitch, making him cough into his hand to play it off.
You raise the cup, which he could barely see, âWater.â
He steps into the kitchen, and just like you, ignored the light switch on the wall as he walks past it, deciding to lean against the fridge, a few feet away.
âKinda creepy.â He jokes, watching as you drink some more, crossing his arms over his chest.
You shrug, placing the cup on the counter so you could lift yourself up, trying to be eye to eye with him. He took it as an invitation to get closer, stepping between your legs and resting his hands on either side of you.
It took him a moment to realize what he did, but he didnât falter. There was a shift in the atmosphere when he just stayed there, looking at you with that oh so in love gaze. There was a beat of silence, Ryland's eyes flickered between your eyes and your lips, cocking his head to the side so gently.
âThis ok sweets?â He muttered when he leaned in closer, hot breathes against your skin.
âYeahâ your response was barely there, but he heard it.
Ryland leaned in, closing the gap with a slow kiss. His hand came to cup your jaw, guiding you to follow his leisurely pace. He hummed against your lips, leaning away slightly just to look at you, pulling your bottom lip down with his thumb, watching it bounce back into place with a lazy smile, before tenderly going back in for more.
His fingers felt soft against your skin, the frame of his glasses nudging against your own, something youâve grown used to when you both kiss. Your arms came up to wrap around his shoulders, fingers running slowly through his hair before settling at the base of it, scratching lightly at the short hairs, earning a whiny noise from him. You felt his other hand grab your hip, rubbing up and down your waist for a few seconds, before it found its way to the hem of your shirt and nudged it upwards, letting his cold fingers settle against the warm skin of your waist. The contrast of it made you arch your body away from his hand, but he just pulls you closer to the edge, until you were just leaning on him.
You gasped at the sudden movement, and his freezing fingers (genuinely, youâd think he's a dead body or something), giving him access as his tongue slowly licked your bottom lip, prying your mouth open with ease. The movements were measured, heâs exploring every corner of your mouth, furrowing his brows because he canât lean in more, can't have more of your sweet taste that he simply canât get enough of.
At no point does he try to change the tempo; he kept it easy, slow, and steady because it was too late to even think about doing anything else. Besides, why rush something that he wishes could last forever?
âCan we go back to the couch?â You mumble your words against his lips when he pulls away for a sliver of a second. He licks his lips, his wide, dark pupils look up to meet yours, which are in the same state, and he nods sluggishly.
You were about to hop off the counter to walk over, but he pulled you closer by his hand on your hip, his other tapping your thigh, beckoning you to wrap your legs around his waist.
âMmm heavy,â you slurred, pecking his lips so that heâll let go, but he didnât, just pulled you off the counter with a quiet grunt. You yelped, wrapping your arms around his neck tighter. âRy-!â
âYou werenât gonna fall.â His voice was heavy, and you could sense the smile in it.
When he gets to the couch, he places you softly on your back, not missing a beat to settle his legs between yours. His chest pressed against yours for a second before he held himself up with his arms, resting near your head at the top of the couch. Heâs smiling down at you with those sweet eyes, the light of the TV casting a blue hue on his face, which just makes him look even more angelic.
âHiâ you whisper, feeling your heart hammering in your chest. Itâs not the first time hes this close to you, but you canât help but get nervous at just how pretty he is.
And youâre not the only one. His own hands felt shaky, not because he canât support his own weight, but because. God, how is it that you can be so pretty no matter how he looks at you?
âHeyâ he responds, quickly pecking your lips once, twice, thrice, and pulling away to run his fingers through the front pieces of your hair, pushing them aside so he could get a full view of your face. âIâm so lucky to have youâ
You laugh quietly when he comes back for one more, feeling that warm sensation forming again in the bottom of your stomach. Your nails take a slow path up his forearm, coming to a slow stop at his bicep, squeezing the muscle gently, earning a smile from him against your lips.
After a few more minutes of kissing and giggles between the two of you, Ryland pulls away, kissing the top your nose, and then nuzzled against it with his own. âŞâŞ
Road tripping with Ryland when everything going wrong somehow ends in everything going right.

If Ryland couldâve chosen any person on Earth to be stuck with on this road trip from hell, he still wouldâve chosen you. You, who was sitting in the passengerâs seat of the car while he stared at the engine, pretending he knew what the problem was. You, who had been the first person heâd called after getting an invitation to his first conference in years, because you were his favorite coworker and he had a feeling youâd say yes to using up his guest pass.
The look on your face told him you were more amused than upset, because of course this would be something that would happen to you. You were already a third of the way to LA, too, over a hundred miles from home and now stuck on the side of I-5 while cars flew by.
Ryland made himself look busy for a moment, tapping on a suspiciously empty coolant reservoir before dropping the act and returning to the car.
âOkay, so, minor setback,â he started.
âYou didnât fill the coolant, did you?â you asked.
âI did, actually.â You only had the time to start raising your eyebrows before he folded. âOkay, maybe not. Iâll call roadside and weâll be back on the road before you know it.â
He sounded oddly optimistic given your current situation; the weather was hot, in the eighties, and you guys didnât have a running car, which meant no A/C. You didnât mention it, though. He seemed too excited at the idea of fixing the problem for you to let yourself bring him down with you.
He stepped back outside of the car, this time with his phone in his hand as he called for help. And you just watched.
Well, watched wouldnât be the right word. Observed was probably better.
You couldnât hear what he was saying, phone now sandwiched between his shoulder and ear. His lips seemed to never stop moving, his face scrunched up from the California sun shining in his eyes. His glasses were somehow still clinging to his face, a considerably rare sight for him, and his stupid auto club shirt seemed to fit pretty well right now (in more ways than one). For a moment, you let yourself imagine that this wasnât a road trip with your coworker, but instead a road trip with the guy you were planning out your life with. You couldnât decide the exact scenario in the moment; maybe you were moving to your new house, or maybe you were on the way to check out a wedding venue.
Your daydream was cut short when the driverâs side door opened again. Ryland slid into the seat next to you, letting out a soft sigh of defeat (and maybe a little disbelief, too, truly).
âOkay, so, they said theyâre going to be an hour,â he said, cringing at his own words as he said them. The groan left your throat before you could help it. This was far, far from ideal.
âYouâre kidding.â
âI wish. But, hey, at least youâre not stuck on the side of the road alone! Iâm sure we can find something to do while we wait.â
You had to hold back from squinting at him. Something was clearly off; he was refusing to look at you, instead choosing to focus on the flickering lights on the dashboard in front of him. That wasnât the only thing, either, because Ryland was never this chipper, especially not in a moment like this. Usually, he was on the verge of doomsday the moment something happened, but now, he just⌠didnât care?
âAre you okay?â Ryland looked up at your words, blinking a few times.
âWhy?â
Nice one, Grace, he thought to himself. Not weird at all. Totally.
You frowned this time, and he wanted to slap himself across the face.
âYouâre acting weird,â you said. âYou donât have to go to the conference, you know. Itâs not life or death. We can go home.â
âNo, no. I want to go.â He responded quickly, a clear cover up for another lie.
âRyland ââ
âI do! Itâs a great conference, you know. Thereâs a lot of cool speakers. Iâm gonna learn new things, and⌠I want to be with you.â He smiled in that way that he always did, his eyes crinkling up while silently screaming for help. To anyone else, they wouldâve found it sarcastic.
You found it genuine.
âOh,â you said. There was a pause, one far too long to be interrupted by Ryland. âYou couldâve just said that, you know? You didnât have to act all weird.â
The sigh that left Ryland was loud, heavy. He sounded genuinely frustrated. âI tried. I was â I was trying to be smooth, I guess. I donât know.â
Your lips quivered as they twitched towards a smile, parting to give him some sort of remark when you suddenly realized you couldnât talk anymore.
Because Ryland was suddenly kissing you.
He was gentle with it, hesitant, like he was afraid you were going to yank back and smack him across the face. Instead of doing that, though, your eyes fluttered shut, hand reaching up to grab at his hair when he started to pull away. Yanking him back into place was easy; he didnât really put up much of a fight to begin with, especially when a big, lovestruck grin was forming on his face. The movement felt natural. Slow, sure, and gentle. Just like Ryland.
He pulled away a few kisses later, forcing himself to separate from you to catch his breath, to have a second to recover and think about what heâd just done.
You grow distant, knowing the end of your relationship was near, but Ryland was not going to let that happen.

The coffee shop was loud and buzzing; business people had places to be, and others had friends to see at the booths in the corner. You sat with your best friend at one of them, sipping away with your warm drink in hand, watching her contort her face in disgust at a simple sip from the matcha. You laugh, quickly hiding it with your cup so it wasnât nearly as obvious. She caught it though, glaring at you with no bite.
âI swear these new coffee shops just put things on the menu without thinking.â Celena sighed, pushing the cup so it slid deeper into the table. She always complained but never stopped buying it.
You roll your eyes and took another sip, phone buzzing on the table, but you didnât bother checking, your eyes drifting over to the glass window overlooking the busy street. Celena raised a brow, eyes darting between the phone and your face for a couple of seconds. When the screen turned blank, she clears her throat.
âWhat?â You ask, feeling her gaze, lowering the cup to get a full view of her judgmental look.
âNot gonna check that?â
âItâs probably Ry,â you shrug, and she seems even more confused.
âWell⌠wouldnât you want to respond to your boyfriend?â
A silence stretched, your face becoming visibly more uncomfortable. She sighed, leg steadily slipping closer and nudging your foot.
âWhat happened?â She asked, tilting her head so that her ponytail swayed to the side. She was your best friend because she knew everything about you. Especially your very hard, unmanageable love life. But she has heard nothing but good things about this one.
Ryland was your first real partner. You had met at a coffee shop closer to Grover Cleaveland Middle, when you were sitting at one of the booths working on some of your work, while Celena ran to the bathroom after spilling her iced coffee over herself. She had come back just in time to see him offering his number to you.
That was months ago, and everything was perfect with him. Well. Except for the small detail that. He hasnât tried to have sex with you. Well, you donât mind, you prefer this, that he doesnât make a move. But he keeps delaying it, and it has never come up in a conversation, which only makes this harder to deal with. Itâll only hurt more when he eventually finds out you never want it. And that heâll prefer someone who will.
âNothing, weâre good,â you reply, with a tight smile that doesnât quite reach your eyes, but Celena doesnât push, even if she wanted to know, only nodding and continuing to talk about her own love life, or lack thereof.
But your head wasn't in it, your phone buzzed again, a message from âRyry <3â popped up, an image. You didnât reach out, waiting for the screen to go black again, reflecting the lights on the ceiling. The room was spinning, and Celena was too hyper.
âI need to go,â you got up abruptly, and she stared at you, not saying a word as she watched you walk away.
The walk to your apartment was long, but needed. You opted out of grabbing the bus, deciding you needed the fresh air. The cold breeze was a much needed contrast from the warm cafe, but it got you out of that weird headspace, so youâre thankful. You felt another vibration as you walked into the building, but at this point, youâd rather just check it when you were in the comfort of your room.
You unlock the front door of your apartment, well. You were going to unlock it. But as soon as you grabbed the handle to put in the key, it opened. A chill ran down your spine. You locked the door this morning; you made sure you did. Maybe-
âSweetie?â A voice called out from inside your apartment, and it made you stiff at the door.
You hadnât answered his messages, they were from an hour ago at least, the newest one just 5 minutes ago when you were downstairs. Maybe you could say your phone died? No, that wouldnât work. Wait. Why was he here?
You had given him a key at some point for emergencies. One time, you were deathly sick, and he was in and out for the whole week, it only made sense for him to have your spare. But he kept it, not because you didnât ask for it back, but because you told him to keep it, and it slipped your mind until this very moment.
You heard footsteps approach the door, and it caused panic to overcome your entire body, slamming it shut. It was only cracked open an inch, but it was loud when it closed, shaking the sign that your neighbor had up on their own door. Itâs like you could feel his presence on the other side, waiting. The ticking seconds from your watch became agonizing as they passed.
He called out your name from the other side, it sounds careful, muffled by the thick wooden door. From your side, you saw the doorknob rattle for a few seconds as he tried to grab it, and then the door creeks open slowly.
He stood there, looking at you with curious eyes. Youâve been acting weird for the last couple of weeks. Dates he planned would be canceled, messages were cut short, and phone calls were nonexistent at this point. It was a stark contrast to how it was when you first started going out, there was a nonexistent wall between your lives.
Ryland looks tired. He wasnât wearing his tie, the top buttons of his shirt were undone, and his glasses were hanging around his jaw like always. You could smell the faint aroma of pasta coming from inside your apartment. He didnât like to cook, in fact, he's one of the worst cooks you know. Why was he cooking? Was he letting you down easy? Did he figure it out?
âRyland,â it was breathless, your smile wasnt there, it didn't reach your eyes like the one he's come to love. You stared at him, waiting, unsure if you should hug him, kiss him, or run away and hide at Celenaâs apartment. Sure, itâs a 30 minute walk, but you could make it in ten if you ran fast enough.
He whispers your name, stepping to the side to let you in. You hesitate. Because as soon as that door closes, heâs going to fight, surely. Theyâre all the same.
This is why you donât date anymore. Itâs too complicated because youâre complicated. Because you decide to be selfish about what you want in your life. And they always hate it.
The door shut behind you, lock echoing in the small hall. Youâre looking at the ground, taking off your shoes, but his eyes wouldnât leave your figure. You were waiting for him to raise his voice, to hear the questions being thrown at you. But nothing came, and somehow that was worse. If you act normal, maybe, just maybe, you could avoid the inevitable.
You canât lose him today. Or tomorrow. You simply canât lose him.
âHow was your day?â You ask, trying to act casual, like it doesnât twist your heart to know he wonât love you anymore when you canât give him what he wants.
You wanted to get this over with.
You need him to stay with you.
He was quiet, observing you as he leaned against the door, giving you space as he waited. You didnât turn around to face him when you stood up straight.
âIt was long, kids were a mess, Lucas spilled water over some papers on my desk, so I had to reprint them before leaving.â He said from where he stood, voice even and warm, like any other time heâd tell you about his day.
Usually, it would occur over dinner youâd cook at his place, or cuddling on the couch watching some show that you put on to pass the time. His fingers would leave delicate paths down your arm, the tingly sensation becoming a comfort you looked forward to when you were with him.
You couldnât have this conversation. You didnât want to lose him over this.
âSorry to hear.â It was genuine, but your voice felt tight.
Maybe this one time⌠you could pretend. Heâs not like the others. Maybe you can tolerate it this time.
Just as he was about to speak again, you started to walk away, excusing yourself to take a shower. He let you, watching your figure retreat to your room, and hearing the shower running as he finished making a simple dinner for both of you, which was honestly just so surprising. He had mentioned it on one of your first dates, nervously rambling because you just looked so perfect beside his messy brain, laughing about how hopeless he was in a kitchen. Yet here he was anyway, making pasta on a Friday night with the help of a tutorial, putting in effort where he easily couldâve taken the simpler route.
Ryland was already sitting at one of the barstools in the kitchen when you walked out, your pj pants dragging on the floor, the worn out baggy tee he had let you borrow one time (and never asked for back) was hiding anything you could be showing off. It was a stark contrast to his jeans and button up shirt, his tie was probably hanging with his blazer near the entrance, and you hadnât noticed he was here for that long. He didnât even stop by his place to shower first.
âWhen did you get here?â You asked as you walk past him, fidgeting with the stool in front of you, not looking at him.
âRound 4. I texted you, but you didnât answer, so I let myself in.â
Ah, that was the text you ignored.
âOh. Sorry, I didnât see it.â He simply hummed at your answer.
The silence stretched, the stool whined under your weight as you sat on it. The steam of the pasta wasnt giving up, fogging up the edge of your glasses when you peak over to look at the bowl.
âThank you for the food, you didn't have to cook.â You broke the silence, still not looking at him. He smiled, followed by a forced laugh.
âWell, I wanted to.â Then it was quiet again.
You werenât sure how long he would wait.
You grab the fork in your bowl, twirling the pasta around it, and letting a few of the pieces slide off. He was watching intently, figuring out the puzzle in his head from your lack of communication.
He hates confrontation; his last relationship left him with a need for answers after she ended things abruptly one night, and now, youâre pushing him away for no real reason. Was it because he left the toilet seat up the last time he came over? Did he mess up when you guys were making out and he cut it short? Maybe.
He needs answers. Screw being scared, he can't lose you over this, over not knowing. He would rather be hurt with your words than the unnerving silence youâre giving him.
âWhy are you hiding from me?â
There it is.
He turned to face you now, resting his weight on the arm that leaned against the countertop. You stilled, hands coming down and neatly folding on your lap, not looking up at him. The pasta was very interesting anyway.
âIâm not," you mumbled, âI'm right here.â You add to lighten the mood, but his brows furrowed.
He usually loves jokes.
âYou are. You are hiding,â he repeats, tilting his head just enough to be in your line of vision. âYour texts are short, if you even respond. We havenât had a date in 3 weeks. Phone calls go to voicemail.â
His voice sounds. Heavy. Tired. Not judging, not trying to sound mad at you, because he wasnât. Just wanting, trying to understand you. You werenât something that came with instructions, not something he could research until he found everything he was looking for. But he needs to understand, wants to know whatâs wrong.
You went to turn the stool away from him, but he catches the back of it and swivels you to face him, his sock catching the footrest of your stool and bringing you closer. The screech of metal against wood wasnât harmonic, but he didnât care.
He cares about you. And you werenât being yourself for the past month.
âBaby, please.â Heâs not forcing you to look at him, but god did he want you to. His hand hovered over your thigh, but he saw the molecular movement of your body as you tensed and calmed down. He decided to place his hand on the edge of the stool instead.
When you didnât answer, it pushed him to talk more.
âYouâve been⌠different. And Iâm sorry if I did something to make you uncomfortable or upset, but I need you to talk to me. I-â he clears his throat, running his fingers through his already messy hair.
âI want us to be good. Please, just help me fix whatever I did.â
It broke you. How genuine he sounds, how distraught his voice and his appearance are. The fact that he thinks he did something wrong. You finally look up, catching his intense stare. And the edge of his lips turns up when he finally gets to see your beautiful face. He allowed the silence to happen, trying his best to not disturb it. But god was it hard when all he wanted was to hear your voice.
âI...â you stop, trying to think this through.
Youâve never really had a normal conversation about this. Sure, your friends knew, but that was different; you didnât have to worry about disappointing them with your lack of experience, or lack of wanting to experience it.
Every time this came up with a past relationship, it was minutes before it was about to happen. Either theyâd leave, saying they would call, or tell you to leave so they could think.
As if your way of living was a problem to them. A weight on their shoulders they couldnât carry.
You take a deep breath, and you feel his warm hand engulf yours, which were still hiding in your lap. You hadnât even noticed they started shaking.
âThereâs something. Something I shouldâve brought up before.â You look away for a second, eyes wandering around the room before trying to look at him again. âItâs⌠not something you did, or well. Itâs-â your voice dies, a strangled sound invading the words that you wanted to say.
âBreathe,â he interrupts your lack of words, squeezing your hand three times. You take deep breaths and feel the sting in your eyes. His other hand came to rest around your elbow, the contact was comforting.
This one you donât want to lose.
Ryland Grace has been one of the best people in your entire life. And these last few months have been everything to you. You canât throw this all away. His way of loving you was different.
âI'm⌠I have a low libido. And. A lack of want when it comes to sexual intimacy.â It felt more explanatory than just saying a word that he most likely wouldnât understand. And you wanted to say more, suggest that youâd still have sex with him, but the words couldnât escape you. It felt wrong just thinking it.
âItâs this... thing called asexuality. I. I understand if itâs confusing, if you donât want to be with me anymore. I was selfish to not share when I met you. I was trying to find the right time, but. It just-â you sigh. Heâs gonna end things now.
His hand doesnât falter in his touch, and he doesnât flinch. He stayed there, waiting. And it. Surprised you.
âWhy would I leave?â He asked, voice soft.
The question made your heart slow for a second. You furrow your brows because this isnât how it usually goes.
When you finally look again, he's not mad. His hand was still gentle, his voice wasnt raised. Itâs just Ryland.
He laughs to himself, sighing a breath of relief as he leans back, still not letting go. âI thought I- I did something that was making you pull away, that maybe the fact I wasnât doing something right was making you hurt. And hearing that is just a relief.â
He knew what it was? Well, it wouldnât surprise you, he teaches kids who are probably figuring out their identity during 5th period.
There was no outburst, no disappointment, or I can change you. Just quiet acceptance.
The cogs turned in your head, the nails digging into your palm slowly start to lose strength. âYou donât⌠mind?â
He thought out his words, his free hand tapping the counter.
âIâd be a hypocrite if I got upset.â He lands on and waits for his words to sink into your brain.
Oh.
Oh.
You shot up, startling both of you. His hand retracts but stays near just in case you manage to slip.
âYouâre-â you cut yourself off, analyzing the implications of his words. Heâs also. He is??
âWell, I mean, I've never really settled on a title, but-â he starts, but stops when he sees the pure happiness in your face. And when your arms wrap around his shoulders, he only holds you tighter.
âI didnât wanna- I was so scared I would lose you.â Your words were muffled by his shirt, but he understood everything. How you felt, why you felt it. Maybe it was different for him, maybe this needed to be a deeper, more throughout conversation. But for now, he kisses your forehead gently, his hands rubbing the soft fabric of your shirt in a comforting motion.
âIâm not going anywhere.â
âŚ
âThe pastas burnt by the way.â
âYou havenât even tried it.â

Still hc that Ryland uses a walkman and vinyl players as his main source of consuming music. He hates ads, but refuses to play into marketingâs hands, so he makes his own mixtapes, and buys second hand albums at the thrift store (did somehow find Sabrina carpenter and is obsessed with espresso) (his kids are #sickofit).
He also has a vhs player and collection of dvds in his apartment, he has a rack for his favorite films he plays on repeat and a binder for the rest of them.
His kids say hes an old fart but hes proud of his collection!!!
Thinking neighbor!Ryland who youve been friends with for a couple months and one night he comes over to build a fort with you and start rambling about anything and nothing and somehow the subject of feelings comes up and.. oh? Oh you like him? OH HE LIKES YOU?
The Spanish teacher is getting too close to you, he doesnât like it.

Rylands classroom was silent, somehow the kids have finally listened to him and started doing the class work he had given them for extra credit. His pen was balanced between his pointer and middle, tapping the wooden desk every other second as he read through some papers for next weeks class.
The frames of his glasses hung low on the bridge of his nose, his free hand moving the pages of papers laid on his desk in messy piles. He knew where everything was just like this, one time a janitor messed up his papers and he was absolutely livid because he couldnât find anything for a full week.
There were three soft knocks at the door, causing him to look up. But, the noise wasnât against his door, causing him to sit up just a little more, straightening his back to be able to see through the window, and he caught a glimpse of that black floral cardigan heâs grown to love.
But you werenât standing in front of his closed door, no no. You were standing in the one across his classroom, hushed voice speaking to the teacher who stood in his doorway. Grace has never seen you talk to him before. Every time you walked down this hallway, was either into his classroom, the bathroom or the teachers lounge.
Mr. Morales leaned against the wooden frame, smiling down at you as you were giving him some sheets, probably some he had asked you to print out, since your printer was always faster than the one in the office. But only few knew this, since when does He know that? And why couldnt he have the courtesy to at least go pick it up himself?
âHeâs newâ, Ryland answered his own question. Maybe he still needed to get his bearings, and you explained how it works from that point forward.
âMr. Grace?â A little girls voice startled him out of whatever trance he was in, the pen he was holding falling out of between his fingers.
âYes?â His head slowly swiveled away from where you stood to look at Jessica, who was standing in front of his desk holding out the paper. âAlready?â
She nods eagerly, waiting for one of the bean bags to be handed to her.
He sighs, taking the paper, and handing her what she wanted, âyou know rushing doesnât mean you get everything right.â
âI got everything right.â
âUh huhâŚâ he shooed her off back to her desk, glancing at the paper and⌠yeah she got everything right. As he kept reading through it, he took a chance to peak up to see if you were still there, but you were long gone, and the door was still wide open to see Mr. Morales continue with his class.
Over the next week, he kept seeing small things happen between the two of you. He was at the library often, once even inviting himself to eat lunch with you, staying for the full period (Grace decided to eat in his classroom that day). He brought you snacks one morning, giving Grace an enthusiastic wave, but his attention was solely on you, and you allowed it to happen. Hell, he mightâve just not been there at all.
It was getting out of hand. His feelings that is. He doesnât care what you two have going on in your free time, itâs your life. Youâre allowed to have friends, youâre allowed to be flirted with, itâs not like youre dating. Itâs not like hes flirting with you, or have tried because itâs not like he likes you.
Besides, Mr. Morales wasnt a bad guy. One time when Ryland was in his free period, he came over to ask for some help with his classrooms decoration, saying the walls were too bare. He even complimented Rylands decor, saying that it was one of the best classrooms hes seen, and that âif you were my teacher you wouldâve been my favoriteâ.
So yeah, he couldnt really hate him when he was such a sweet kid.
By next week, it was kinda normal to see Mr. Morales in the library with the two of you. Grace was trying to be civil, asking about his work life, and hobbies, but never personal. Because if he found out that you were dating?
Yeah heâs not coming back to school.
He did find out that he just finished his bachelors, so he was fresh out of college and this was his first real job at a school. No wonder he looked so young, and he was already hitting on one of his coworkers.
Maybe if he pulls him to the side one afternoon he could explain how dating coworkers is not a good idea, that it could make the workplace uncomfortable, and that he should just leave you be, but that would make him a hypocrite. Because, God, were you interrupting any coherent thought he could consider forming.
Wait what?
Anyways, that Friday was a long day, and Ryland wanted nothing more than to go home. He kept glancing at the clock, and at his open door, hoping that you would walk by in a chance of just catching a glimpse of you. And as soon as the last period ends, the kids went flying out of the classroom as he finished packing his bag. When he closed the door to his room behind him, he peaked into the Spanish classroom, that was seemingly empty, looking at all the decor and vowels on the walls. It was so lively, almost similar to his class.
A part of him is glad that he was starting to feel comfortable here. If it wasnât for the fact that he liked you as well, Grace could consider him one of his friends at some point. Walking away from the doorway, he goes down the hall to go to the library like he usually does after a day of classes, going to pick you up and walk with you to your car as you talk about your days.
And as he was about to turn into the library, doors wide open since it usually doesnât close immediately after classes, giving kids a chance to check out books one last time before leaving, he froze. Because there he was again, his frame leaning against your desk as he was mindlessly having a conversation with you, his dark curls falling over his eyes when he flashed you a smile.
He was making you laugh, distracting you while you were still doing your work. Grace just⌠watched, his hand turning into a small fist on his side but he quickly tries to calm down, reminding himself once again, that youâre just friends.
Sure, he hugs you every time he greets you or says goodbye. Yeah, he brings you coffee every single morning because, according to him, the coffee machine in the teachers longue takes too long, and he just insists that it tastes bad. And yes, there was that one time he had accidentally held your hand once to stop you from crossing the road when a car was coming, and refused to let go until you finished walking to your destination.
But these were all things friends did⌠right?
And friends also think that your eyes shine an even prettier color when the sun hits them just right, or that your hair blowing in the wind makes you look like an angel sent directly from god themself.
âŚ.Ok he likes you. Screw it, thereâs no point in denying it.
Maybe it was the way your tongue slipped out just a bit when you were concentrated writing an email, or the way your smile brightened when you successfully helped a kid with their homework, but he was absolutely smitten by you. And god the idea of someone else even wanting you hurt, because they have a better shot at being with you than he ever did.
He felt someone bump into him, and of course it just had to be Mr. Morales.
âIm so sorry Grace!â He yelled out the apology speed walked down the hall, not even bothering to look back at him.
Grace stared daggers into the back of his neck, and if looks could kill, theyâd have to find a substitute for his class.
âGrace!â You called out, his eyes snapped away from the retreating man he was staring at to you, who was still behind your desk, leaning over with your arm raised to catch his attention. He gave a small wave, cautiously inching into the room.
âIâll be done in a few, sorry to keep you waiting.â You sigh, tapping your cranium as you think of what you have to do before leaving.
âNo worries, im in no rush.â
Grace taps his fingers periodically onto the wood, trying his best to not stare at you. But obviously he fails.
Your eyes catch his look, the furrowed brows and the slight huff that escapes him. You turn your seat to get a better view, which makes him falter and lean away (he hadnât even noticed he was leaning closer).
âWhat?â He asked, seeing you tilt your head to the side and, God! could you be any cuter???
âWhatâs wrong with you?â It comes out with a friendly laugh, but it scares him. âYouâve been.. weirdâ
âIm not weirdâ he defends weakly, causing you to cock a brow at him.
âWell you are weird.â you giggle to yourself, and watch as he rolls your eyes with a sideways smile âBut I mean- youâve been acting different Ry.â
He blows out some air, looking up at the ceiling while his hand came up to scratch the back of his neck. How does he explain that heâs jealous, without saying that heâs jealous?
âWell-â
âOi cuzâ Morales came back, walking to stand besides Grace as he talked to you about a movie you had planned to watch tomorrow at the theaters.
Ryland was about to step back, maybe grumble something about how rude it was to just burst into a conversation like that, but. Did he call you cuz?
âOh my godâ he whispered under his breathe, and suddenly everything clicked.
Your eyes jumped between the two, looking at Rylands face as it twists from whatever feeling he had when he saw your cousin walk in, to pure relief.
Your cousin stopped talking when he realized you werenât even listening to him, just looking to his side to where Ryland stood.
He smiled brightly at Ryland, grabbing his shoulder with a small shake, âOi dude- you should totally come too!â
âOh no, I wouldnât want to intrude.â He held his hands up with a shy smile, looking at the ray of sunshine that is this man.
He genuinely could not believe he ever saw him in a negative light. His eyes look back to you, and you were just in awe at how awkward he was being.
âNah you wouldnât intrude, I know someoneee wouldnât mind~â he teased, and before he could say anything else his body was yanked backwards. You stood up at the speed of light, pulling him away from Ryland, and he watched him stumble trying to reach out his arm but it didnât do anything.
âOkay! Thatâs enough!â Your voice comes out an octave too high and your ears already felt warm.
Ryland stood there while you almost strangle the poor kid as youâre cursing him out in Spanish, huh. He didnât know you spoke Spanish. He heard a name be thrown into the conversation, âCalebâ and then some more words he couldnât understand. But by the tone of your voice, well it sounds like a mother scolding her child.
When you were done (and Caleb looked like a kicked puppy), you finally turned to Ryland, a smile trying to hide how embarrassed you felt. âHeâs kidding- I mean, you can come if you want but thatâs totally up to youâ
He stood there, thinking, counting the possibilities of this ever happening again, being able to hangout with you outside of school hours. I mean it has happened before, but usually it still consists of work being done. And honestly speaking, he just cannot say no to you.
âWell if youâre offering.â He shrugs, watching as Caleb cheers, making your eyes roll.
âAwesome, weâll pick you up! Theyâll tell you the details, cause I gots to goâ with that hes basically running off again, not before giving you a quick side hug.
You both watch him disappear into the hallways, hearing a distant thud. He probably hit the door on his way out.
âHeâll be fineâ you mutter to yourself, before turning back to Ryland, and you couldnât help the teasing smile that found its way to your lips.
âRyland.â
His heart started to hammer against his ribs, the way you said his name sounded dangerous. âY- yes?â
âWere you, perhaps, jealous that I was spending time with my cousin instead of you?â
He swallowed hard, laughing nervously. His fingers fidget with the end of his tie, rolling it up and letting it fall before repeating it.
âHow bout we walk you to your car yeah?â
You laugh, nodding as you grab your purse. The walk was quiet, but nice. And when you reach for your keys in your purse, you pause.
âRy.â
He hums, eyes watching different cars pull away from their unassigned assigned parking spots.
âYouâre my best friend, no one will replace you ok?â
âOh- oh yeahâ he turned to look at you, the scarf around your neck, your pink cheeks that never got accustomed to the chilly weather. âYouâre my best friend tooâ
You smile at his sincere words, unlocking the door to place your purse inside, but you donât go in. Instead, you turn to him, wrapping your arms around his shoulders and pulling him closer to you, hiding your face into his neck. He hesitated, because your hugs werenât like this usually.
This was⌠totally. Still a friend hug.
He slowly wraps his arms around your waist, pulling you impossibly closer. God you were so warm.

Hi guys, I ruined my friends night (and my own) so Iâm ruining yâallâs too!
So im scrolling on TikTok an I get this video, and im just sitting there in the middle of my room. And I. Send it to them with:
âThis audio, but itâs Colt talking to one of the kids who misses Graceâs classes because he was very interactive with the students and never left any outâ
And lwk I can just imagine that itâs one of the quiet kids who never said anything in any class, but science was always their favorite, and Ryland helped them come out of their shell and answered all their questions. And when he left it kinda stung because that was their #1 hype man.
And Colt regularly visited the school when Ryland was still around, so he still pops in here and there to make sure the kids are alright after it was announced he was going on the Hail Mary, and he sees the quiet kid in the corner and then that conversation happens.
