So, the Complex was created in the 1970-80's when Async accidentally opened The Threshold (a portal essentially), simultaneously creating The Complex or as we know it a whole separate reality, The Backrooms.

Now we also know that The Complex doesn't follow time correctly and null zones started appearing everywhere. So imagine that when the backrooms were created, it managed to go back in time and also exist then too. Existing in all timelines. You get what i mean?

So let's take my favourite historical figure who ive developed a little something scenario for, Cleisthenes of Athens.

Now imagine a null zone opens up in ancient Athens. Cleisthenes' reforms have just been implemented and stuff. Now Cleisthenes puts up and leans his whole bodyweight against a wall or a column which he doesn't know, contains a null zone. He noclips into the backrooms.

Now this might take a turn. There's two opinions: one, the backrooms will take the shape of the environment that the subject remembers. In this case, a never ending maze replica of the Stoa or something, who knows. Two, the belief that the Backrooms stay the same, yellow wallpaper, carpets and all, all throughout time. Most people believe the first case is more plausible. So let's go with the first one.

Okay so now i want to form something. Imagine if the backrooms couldn't exactly copy a 1990's (modern, for that time) furniture store, along with its owner who spent a lot of time there. How would it copy an ancient greek, 2550 years into the past? It would be terrifyingly inaccurate.

Anyways now let's continue with the scenario. Cleisthenes noclips in, and he looks around. The stoa, but it's maze like and columns being just not the right size and shape, a replica of the pnyx further but it's distorted. And best of all? A replica of the Parthenon's architecture even though it was built later on after Cleisthenes. Meaning yes, the backrooms confuse some timelines and events there.

Anyways, he starts exploring and all yeah yeah, tries to figure out how to leave etc etc. Fast forward to when he encounters a still life. A copy of him self when he was young, 20 something, but he looks...wrong. His limbs and slightly longer and thinner, the facial structure is slightly more exaggerated, the eyes are bulging and the chiton is slightly glitching at the hem, it looks like that entity is wearing his skin.

Okay let's fast forward again. The still life kills him and eats him or something, leaving bits and pieces of him in that room. Now imagine later on, an Async employee exploring and researching the Complex stumbles across an ancient greek themed room. Inside, there's something strange. A big pile of ostraka. Pottery shards, basically. They count them, turning out to be 6.001 pieces. And all of them have the exact same name written on them, looking like they were scratched on, but the style isn't like lines and messy. It looks like a computer font scratched onto a shard. The name written on it is Κλεισθένης. The Complex didn't bother to write "Κλεισθένης ο Αθηναίος" or "Κλεισθένης του Μεγακλεους" (which that would've been ironic, considering how cleisthenes essentially got rid of patronymics), it just wrote Κλεισθένης, forgetting the whole full name and all.

And all that's left of the great reformer is a big pile of pottery shards with his name on them, symbolising how the Complex essentially "ostracized" him. From life :D
