the  ache  had  been  a  constant  companion  since  he'd  returned,  a  dull  throb  beneath  his  ribs  that  had  nothing  to  do  with  old  injuries  and  everything  to  do  with  the  pilot  he'd  not  found  waiting  for  him.  he'd  been  out  for  days,  a  week  of  silence  and  cold  space  and  seeing  poe  again—alive,  here,  moving  through  the  base  with  that  unshakeable  purpose—had  been  a  relief  so  potent  it  was  almost  painful.  but  the  relief  had  soured  quickly  into  something  else,  something  sharper  and  more  demanding,  as  he'd  watched  poe  get  swept  into  a  flurry  of  briefings  and  resistance  business.

hours.  he'd  be  busy  for  hours.

the  thought  had  settled  in  his  gut  like  a  stone,  heavy  and  unforgiving.  he  shouldn't  be  doing  this.  calling  poe  to  his  quarters  under  a  false  pretense,  a  fabricated  systems  check  on  comms  that  required  the  pilot's  immediate  attention.  it  was  reckless,  a  poe  dameron  maneuver  if  he'd  ever  heard  one.  maybe  poe  was  rubbing  off  on  him.  but  the  thought  of  waiting,  of  enduring  another  meal  alone  with  only  the  echo  of  his  own  breathing  for  company,  was  unbearable.

his  armor  had  felt  like  a  cage.  the  moment  the  door  to  poe's  quarters  had  slid  shut  behind  him,  he'd  methodically  stripped  it  away,  piece  by  piece,  until  only  the  flightsuit  remained.  it  felt  like  shedding  a  skin,  leaving  him  vulnerable  in  a  way  that  both  terrified  and  thrilled  him.  he'd  pulled  the  dark  material  down,  letting  it  pool  around  his  hips,  the  cool  air  of  the  room  a  shock  against  his  overheated  skin.  the  helmet  stayed.  it  always  stayed.  a  final,  desperate  barrier.

part  of  him  was  unsure  his  plan  would  eve  work,  but  he  stretched  out  on  the  cough  regardless.  the  sound  of  the  door  opening  sent  a  jolt  of  pure  panic  through  him.  what  was  he  doing?  this  was  foolish.  impulsive.  the  blood  in  his  veins  ran  cold,  the  sudden,  stark  realization  of  his  own  desperation  hitting  him  like  a  physical  blow.  he  was  frozen,  half-turned  toward  the  door,  a  statue  of  poor  decisions  and  wanton  need.

then  came  the  sound.  a  sharp,  indrawn  breath.  not  of  alarm,  but  of  pure,  unadulterated  shock  (or…  approval?).  it  was  the  only  thing  that  kept  din  from  bolting,  from  snatching  his  flightsuit  up  and  disappearing  into  the  corridor.  poe's  gasp  was  an  anchor,  pulling  him  back  from  the  edge  of  his  own  mortification.

the  air  in  the  room  was  thick,  heavy  with  unsaid  things.  each  breath  din  took  seemed  to  echo  in  the  silence,  a  ragged,  too-loud  sound  that  the  vocoder  couldn't  quite  disguise.  he  could  feel  poe's  gaze  on  him,  a  physical  weight  tracing  the  line  of  his  spine,  the  dip  of  his  lower  back,  the  curve  of  his  ass  where  the  flightsuit  clung  precariously  low.  one  finger,  of  its  own  volition,  hooked  into  a  belt  loop,  tugging  the  material  down  another  inch.  the  muscles  in  his  back  flexed  with  the  small,  clumsy  motion,  a  silent,  involuntary  invitation. 

his  voice  was  a  wreck,  stripped  of  its  usual  calm  and  reduced  to  a  raw,  static-laced  whisper  that  was  little  more  than  a  shape  in  the  air.  it  wasn't  a  greeting.  it  was  a  confession.  a  plea.
