Ellie x fem reader - college au (rodrina dynamic)
An: I know that's right!!
It was too early in the day for Y/N to be annoyed, but here she was anyway.
She and her friends were walking across the quad, sun out, campus busy. Y/N was dressed the same way she always was: perfect. Not overdressed. Not underdressed. Perfect.
Her friends were talking about weekend plans, but Y/Nâs attention drifted the moment she spotted Ellie leaning against one of the picnic tables with a couple of her band friends.
Ellie noticed her immediately â she always did â but she didnât stare. Just a quick glance, then she looked down at her phone like nothing happened.
That shouldâve been the end of it.
Centre-back of the university football team.
Tall, handsome in an obvious way, annoyingly confident.
âY/N!â he called, jogging up beside her.
Her friends turned instantly, whispering.
Y/N kept walking, chin up. âYes?â
âIâve been trying to catch you for like a week.â Matthew smiled down at her. âDo you have plans Friday?â
âNo,â one of her friends said before Y/N could answer. âShe doesnât.â
Y/N shot her a warning look, then turned back to Matthew. âWhy?â
âBecause I want to take you out,â he said, hands in pockets like this was routine for him. âDinner. Drinks. Something nice.â
Her friends silently squealed behind her.
Y/N didnât flinch. âI donât even know you.â
âYou could,â he said easily. âIf you give me a chance.â
She opened her mouth to shut him downâ
She was close now, walking past with her hands shoved in her hoodie pocket, pretending not to listen. Her jaw was tight. Her steps slowed. She glanced at Y/N for just long enough to get caught.
âSo?â he said, leaning in a little. âFriday?â
Y/N hated the way her chest tightened.
Because of the pair of green eyes staring holes into the pavement three metres away.
âIâll think about it don't get your hopes up though,â she said.
Her head snapped slightly, not toward Y/N â toward nothing in particular, like she was trying not to react.
Matthew grinned. âGreat. Iâll text you.â
Y/N nodded once, curt and polite. âif you must.â
He walked off, satisfied.
Her friends immediately exploded.
âHeâs obsessed with you.â
âYou HAVE to go out with him.â
âHeâs literally the hottest guy on the team.â
She was looking past them.
Ellie was standing alone now, staring at the ground, jaw set so tight you could see the muscle working. She didnât look at Y/N.
Y/N excused herself quickly. âI need water.â
Her friends barely registered it â too busy talking about Matthew.
Y/N headed toward Ellie, but she didnât approach her directly. She walked near the table, stopping at the water fountain a few feet away.
âWilliams,â Y/N said under her breath, quiet enough for only Ellie to hear.
Ellie kept her head down.
Ellie finally looked up, expression flat. âWhat.â
Y/N blinked. âWhatâs your problem?â
Ellie let out a dry laugh, but it wasnât amused. âNothing. Youâre clearly busy. Go talk to your boyfriend.â
Y/Nâs eyes narrowed. âDonât be stupid.â
âYou didnât say no.â
Y/N took a breath, steadying herself. âI couldnât. I was with them.â
âThatâs not my fucking problem.â
Y/N stepped closer, low enough that no one could hear them.
âYouâre acting like I owe him something. I donât.â
Ellie shook her head, eyes cutting away. âYou donât owe me anything either.â
That stung more than Y/N expected.
Ellie hesitated. Then she did.
Y/N hated how much it affected her â the heat in Ellieâs stare, the jealousy she wasnât hiding well, the tiny crack in her composure.
Y/N lowered her voice even more.
âHe asked me out. I didnât say yes.â
âYou didnât say no.â
âI didnât say yes.â
âYou couldâve said no.â
âYou know why I couldnât.â
Ellie scoffed. âYeah. Your precious reputation.â
Y/N stepped in, close enough that their arms almost touched.
âDonât turn this into something itâs not.â
Ellieâs voice was quiet.
âIt already is something or at least was.â
Ellie looked down again like she regretted saying it.
âNo,â Y/N said, sharper than she intended. âSay it.â
âYouâre⌠with me. Or whatever this is.â
Y/Nâs stomach flipped painfully.
âThat doesnât mean you get to let football boys ask you out and pretend itâs nothing after you make a big deal over cat flirting with me.â
âI didnât want him to ask me,â Y/N snapped.
âThatâs not what it looked like.â
Y/N stared at her, heartbeat climbing. âYou think I want him?â
Y/N stepped even closer, toe to toe now.
âDo you think I want him?â
âGood,â Y/N said. âBecause I donât.â
Y/N continued, voice cold, steady, honest:
âAnd Iâm not available.â
âI have a girlfriend.â
The word felt strange in her mouth â terrifying, real, grounding, right.
Ellieâs head lifted. âYeah?â
Ellieâs face shifted â tiny, almost invisible â but Y/N saw all of it. Relief. Satisfaction. Something warm she didnât have a name for.
âBut sheâs an idiot,â Y/N added. âSo donât let it go to your head.â
Ellieâs lips twitched. âRight.â
âAnd she gets jealous over nothing.â
Ellie finally met her eyes fully. âMaybe she likes you.â
Y/N exhaled through her nose, annoyed at how much that affected her.
Ellie didnât smile. Not fully. But her expression loosened just enough.
Y/N glanced over her shoulder â Matthew was still on the field, joking with his teammates.
âWait here,â she said.
Y/N walked across the quad, posture straight, expression bored, the exact opposite of what was happening inside her chest.
Matthew noticed her immediately. âHey, thinking things over already?â he asked, smiling like the answer was obvious.
âYou sure? I thought youââ
âI have a girlfriend." Y/N said cleanly.
He nodded once. âAlright. No hard feelings, I'll uh keep this between us. â
âGood,â Y/N said, already turning away.
When she returned to Ellie, Ellie was still standing in the same place, hands in her pockets, pretending she hadnât been watching the entire thing.
Y/N stopped in front of her.
Ellie raised an eyebrow. âWell what?â
Ellieâs voice dropped, low and sure.
Y/N crossed her arms. âGood.â
Ellie stepped closer, not touching, but close enough that Y/N felt the shift in the air.
âYou really told him youâre taken?â Ellie asked.
Y/N lifted her chin, eyes sharp.
Ellie inhaled, slow, steady.
âAnd she knows that?â Ellie murmured.
They didnât make a scene.
They just stood there, two people who finally said the thing neither of them wanted to say first.
After a long moment, Y/N added quietly:
âDonât make me regret it.â
Ellieâs voice was soft, firm, certain:
Y/N looked away, pretending she wasnât smiling.
âOkay,â she said. âGood.â
Ellie shifted closer, just slightly â careful, subtle.
âYour girlfriend,â she said, almost smug.
Y/N shoved her shoulder lightly. âShut up.â
But she stayed next to her for the rest of the walk across campus.
And Y/N didnât move away.
