My boss has a new boss who's been dropping in to check on how different sites are doing and I keep introducing her to the clients by going "This is Hank. Hank, this is my boss's boss, she's very important, please tell her nice things about me" and that's my big Autistic secret to professional networking. Letting them think you're funny
"Networking" doesn't have to feel like one big huge façade of manipulation and lies. You just find people you like. The things you talk about don't even have to be related, you just gotta find people who you like working with who you might reach out to for questions or projects later.
You don't need to look professional and respectable or like a "real" adult. I like to just show up and make it clear I'm receptive to jokes and quirks and weird ideas, and the people who vibe with that usually come to me.
Introduce people you like to other people you like. Talk them up. You can tell your boss "This is Mike he kicks ass, he knows everything about this place, if you want to know something talk to him, if he ever quits we're stealing him"
I found can't think of a polite or socially normal way to say something, sometimes you can just say it like "I don't know if this is dumb or not but I don't know anything about this. Can you explain what you mean?", or "I was taught something different. Should I change how I've been doing it?". I've never had a negative reaction to this.
When in doubt, ask a weird question. "What's your favorite dessert food" is a p good one. Sometimes folks think I'm childish but at least they know what they're getting into and they know I'm not judging them.
Sometimes when higher-ups approach me with a stiff upper lip I'll test the waters with a "is your job as insane as it sounds" or something similar to remind them that I, a worker performing a role, and speaking to them, a worker performing a role. If they give a stiff and measured answer I stay distant and professional. If their performance cracks and their tone changes or they smile or laugh or give a funny reply I know I can relax and joke a bit too.
I still don't enjoy business stuff outside of the most basic day to day duties of my job and conventions n shit are still pretty draining but learning that other people are also following a script and the performance has room for "yes-and" type improv has helped a lot
wait. cancel post. gung-ho cannot be English. where did that phrase come from? China?
ok, yes. gōnghé, which is…an abbreviation for “industrial cooperative”? Like it was just a term for a worker-run organization? A specific U.S. marine stationed in China interpreted it as a motivational slogan about teamwork, and as a commander he got his whole battalion using it, and other U.S. marines found those guys so exhausting that it migrated into English slang with the meaning “overly enthusiastic”.
I mentioned in my one of my last Spencerposting that Spencer’s genetic build restructures itself a little so he’s essentially a direct relative of Papa and Gertrude’s families (see: basically their only bio kid), so i thought I’d share the before and after kind of vibes.
Y’all i love curly hair SO much you have no idea how much realizing Papa and Gertrude both have really straight hair and very little if No direct relatives to point to as an example that it Does run in their family. I compromised by making it choppy and fluffy. He cuts it himself.

like I mean this very seriously as writing advice. the character should experience events and make decisions that make them different at the end of the story. they should be changed. they do not have to be improved.
they can get worse. they can make decisions of an increasingly terrible nature. they can stop taking risks on kindness. they can discover how much they can get away with. they can find religion, or abandon it, with negative effects on their moral creed. the character has to develop. the character does not have to grow.

Top: Yarrowmoon (he/him), first Head Healer of PetalClan
Bottom Left: Swiftbreeze (he/him)
Bottom Middle: Heatherpelt (she/they)
Bottom Right: Treestar (it/its)
[CW: Death, Colonialism]
Swiftbreeze (he/him), warrior in life. LoudClan cat (Yarrowmoon's former clan).
Swiftbreeze was perhaps the fastest cat LoudClan ever had. Much to his clanmates' chagrin, however, Swiftbreeze wasn't exactly humble about this fact. They knew that if they could just beat him in a stupid race, he'd be forced to practice just a drop of humility — unfortunately, he always won.
One day, a terrible fire raged through LoudClan's territory, forcing LoudClan to abandon their camp.
Upon checking to make sure they had everyone, however, they realized a kit was missing. Without a second thought, Swiftbreeze dashed back to camp, where he found the kit, trapped and terrified. Not knowing what might happen to him, Swiftbreeze rushed forward, grabbed the kit, and turned to make his escape — only to see burning branches falling towards him.
Swiftbreeze lunged forward as the burning branches fell.
Screeches filled the air.
Swiftbreeze had managed to save the kit, but fire raged against his fur, against his flesh. Wiggling himself free, Swiftbreeze grabbed the kit once more and ran.
Yarrowstalk met Swiftbreeze and the kit halfway with a bundle of herbs in his mouth, but knew the second he saw Swiftbreeze that there was nothing he could do for his clanmate. After a soft plea, Yarrowstalk gave Swiftbreeze the poppy seeds he had.
Swiftbreeze gave Yarrowstalk a life for confidence.
Heatherpelt (she/they), warrior in life. StoneClan cat. Flintpelt's littermate. Heatherkit, Redkit, and Sandykit's aunt.
Heatherpelt and Flintpelt grew up very close — so much so, that when it was time for them to receive their warrior names, they begged to receive the same suffix — they didn't even care what that suffix was. So, they were named Heatherpelt and Flintpelt.
Their only other family was their mother, who was distant at the best of times. No matter how much Heatherkit and Flintkit would beg their mother to play with them, she'd always say no. Their clanmates would always reassure Heatherkit and Flintkit that their mother did love them, she was just... having trouble adjusting, but... Heatherpaw and Flintpaw's doubts only grew and grew. But, that was fine, as long as they had each other.
One day, while fleeing from a badger that had injured Heatherpelt, she and Flintpelt were forced to trespass onto LoudClan territory. The pair ran into a LoudClan patrol, but it was a LoudClan patrol of one — just Yarrowstalk, one of LoudClan's healers.
The badger, still furious, tried to attack Yarrowstalk, but Flintpelt leapt between them, and managed to drive the badger away.
By the time Flintpelt had turned around, however, Yarrowstalk was at work cleaning and dressing Heatherpelt's wounds.
As thanks for saving him, Yarrowstalk wouldn't tell his leader about Heatherpelt and Flintpelt trespassing. Flintpelt couldn't help but laugh — saving him from what?? A danger they brought?? Yarrowstalk only shrugged. They hadn't meant to, right?? And Yarrowstalk was a healer — his job was to treat injuries. With how high the tensions were among the clans right now, well... LoudClan's leader wouldn't react well. Even better than treating injuries was preventing them — so, really, not telling his leader about what happened was actually the right thing to do.
Heatherpelt didn't like how much Yarrowstalk made Flintpelt laugh, but they were grateful for his treatment of them.
Not long after the trespassing incident, Heatherpelt discovered Flintpelt sneaking out to meet with Yarrowstalk. Despite how much Heatherpelt disproved of what Flintpelt and Yarrowstalk were doing, she swore she wouldn't say anything to anyone about it. No matter what, Heatherpelt would love their littermate, and the punishment Flintpelt would face wouldn't match her violation of the warrior code. Still, Heatherpelt begged Flintpelt to stop seeing Yarrowstalk.
Some amount of time later, Heatherpelt and Flintpelt found themselves in a battle against an enemy clan during The Great War.
Flintpelt didn't notice a warrior sneaking up behind her — but Heatherpelt did. Heatherpelt rushed forward and shoved Flintpelt away, taking a blow that was intended for her. While Heatherpelt survived the battle, the wounds she sustained in it would later become infected, and ultimately take her life.
Heatherpelt gave Yarrowstalk a life for loyalty.
Treestar (it/its), TreeClan's first leader.
Tree was born into a community that had been well-established for generations upon generations. They lived in the forest, but didn't believe they owned it, really — they'd defend the forest, and themselves, from anyone who would try to claim it for themselves, but they were happy to let anyone live and hunt in it. Some members even felt conflicted about driving out other predators, such as foxes, badgers, or dogs — what right did they have to deny the forest to somebody else?? Most of the members of the community agreed they had to protect themselves, however.
An influx of new cats to the forest and the surrounding lands changed things, however.
The community didn't think it was going to — why couldn't they just live in peace, as they always did before?? But new cats were coming, dividing up land like prey. Who gave them the right?? the forest community would ask. The newcomers would just laugh in their faces.
The forest community changed. Not because they wanted to — but because they had to. They had to protect themselves or be destroyed — even if that meant destroying part of themselves in the process.
Tree fought to strike a balance between conforming in ways that would keep it and its community safe, while also trying to keep as many of its community's traditions and beliefs alive. Even when the forest community became TreeClan and Tree became Treestar, the group remained very welcoming of outsiders. Although things would eventually begin to change generations later, Treestar and TreeClan had a strict code — as long as a cat didn't try to claim land for themself, they were welcome within the forest and its community.
