I’ve had chickens for a few years now but never seen as much broodiness as this year. These three hens (left to right: Strawberry, Volmar, and Lucretia) have been camped out for the last couple weeks, but the strange thing is that they swap which boxes they’re in. Each of these three nests is always covered but which hen is on which changes every couple of times I check. And I’ve had guys before who will sit a while but kind of aren’t that committed to hatching anything so just wander off during the day, but these girls don’t leave the coop, they just trade off nests. Has anyone else experienced this? I’m curious whether they’ll bond with whichever chicks they’re sitting on at the time they hatch (my guess??), or if they continue to share the responsibility of hatchlings amongst themselves.
