I watched The Lion King tonight and for some reason some of the lines that were in the movie stuck out to me like never before. I have known these lines since the first time I watched the movie, but I have never thought about what they truly meant until now. Just like the lines in this scene describe, "the past can hurt. But the way I see it, you can either run from it, or.... learn from it.", we tend to either run from our past, push it to the side, cover it up, hide it, forget about it, or even flat out carry it around with us like baggage. We tell/ convince ourselves that we have learned from it and moved on, but in actuality we are still secretly holding onto it. For example, Simba moved on in life as he grew up, but he never actually let what happened in the past go. Instead of dealing with the hurt and pain and learning from it, he shoved it to the side and found other things to distract his mind from facing the pain. Not that he had to forgive himself or anything, but he just never let it go. It's evident when Nala tried to tell him to come back home; he refused. He could not move on from what happened in the past even though he wasn't who he was in the past anymore. He held it over himself, because he couldn't forgive himself for what he had done. Yes, I know he didn't kill his father, but that still doesn't defeat the fact that he felt the pain and hurt that came with his past. My point in all of this is just like Rafiki stated: The past is going to hurt, but you can either carry it around with you and always be depressed, sad, negative, hurt, regretful and so on OR you could learn from it and then strive to be a better person than your old YOU.
