"Television gives us teenage lust exercised or teenage lust repressed but rarely does it evoke the way young people translate their carnal urges into something they understand as a deeper abiding affection. My So-Called Life is essentially a study of a young mind processing desire into something less terrifying and more easily justified — substantiating it with false hopes — and in that regard it is more than a good TV show, it is a good TV show that attains the dimension and complexity of literature. The great postwar novels of adolescence deal with innocence lost; My So-Called Life deals with innocence sustained, but it offers a no-less-illuminating view of what it is to be young because of it."
- Ginia Bellafante, The New York Times
Lost in Space
In light of recent events happening in the San Francisco sky today, this striking photo, by Joel Sternfeld, reminds me of how we are all little fish in a big pond. (Thanks generalmonty!)
Smog Power
The relationship that occurred between Chan Marshall and Bill Callahan (aka Cat Power & Smog) is a dream to me. I had no idea! This must be why Moon Pix and Knock Knock are so beautifully haunting. I Google Mapped the small town of Prosperity, South Carolina, where the couple lived in the mid-90s and took a little stroll down its Main Street. Let's just say, it's no Mount Pleasant, which only adds to the mystery and intrigue of this "power couple." This photo is all I could find and possibly the only one out there for us all to gape at. Not since Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe has a relationship interested me this much. How a book should be written on their long nights of tortured piano benders and minor key crushers! They must have met in the middle and it must have been only electric.

Lake Berryessa
in rainbows
Tonight, a double rainbow appeared over the city and everyone rushed to the sidewalks and to the roofs. I think the following is a nice accompaniment...Â
"The Changing Light" by Lawrence Ferlinghetti
The changing light at San Francisco is none of your East Coast light none of your pearly light of Paris The light of San Francisco is a sea light an island light And the light of fog blanketing the hills drifting in at night through the Golden Gate to lie on the city at dawn And then the halcyon late mornings after the fog burns off and the sun paints white houses with the sea light of Greece with sharp clean shadows making the town look like it had just been painted But the wind comes up at four o'clock sweeping the hills And then the veil of light of early evening And then another scrim when the new night fog floats in And in that vale of light the city drifts anchorless upon the ocean
When will it get the criterion treatment it deserves?

The general public does not know who Michael Shannon is. And only because she was in virtually every movie in 2011, do they know about Jessica Chastain. Shannon is the driving force behind Jeff Nichols'Â Take Shelter, a film that received some coverage last year, but not nearly enough. It's been on my to-see list for sometime now and just last night did I get around to it. And boy, it was nearly two hours of brilliant panic.
Shannon plays Curtis, a construction worker plagued by visions of doom. We see his slow decline play out daily through apocalyptic images of an impending storm but it is left to the viewer to decide whether Curtis is falling into the grasp of paranoid schizophrenia, or if there is truth to these visions. He has it all: a job, a wife, a little girl, a dog, a house, a yard. But what happens when this perfect life is disrupted? The idea of loss is obvious throughout most of the film and to believe Curtis is genuinely provident rather than mentally ill is not so far-fetched. He is a calm and practical character and there are moments (and it's so true to say it!) when it is he who appears sane while those who surround him play the fools.Â
Without giving much more away, the ending was unexpected and thoughtful. The acting by the two main characters was superb. Michael Shannon will win at least two Academy Awards in the coming decade. His facial expressions are proof enough of his talent to move an audience, although to the point of unease.Â
"Okay, like, the way I feel about the Rolling Stones are the way my kids are going to feel about Nine Inch Nails. So I really shouldn't torment my mom anymore, huh?"
